The majority of you believe your indentity will be stolen , someone of the millions will have their indentity stolen irregardless of if that information came from a garbage can or clever hack it will still be blamed on Sonys security breach. Its a logical move for Sony to protect their tail-end in the future, and thereby assuring the public that indeed the sky is not falling.
I fail to see it is a contradiction when most people on these forums already assume they are compromised.
So because crime happens people shouldn't be upset that a companies negligence has drastically increased their risk to be a victim of crime? What kind of circular logic is that.
The contradiction was that you said the information to perform ID theft wasn't taken, but then cited Sony giving millions of people ID theft protection for a year as if that resolves the problem created by the data theft. There would be no need to offer ID theft protection if that information wasn't stolen. Agreed?
A pre nge server would crash under the strain of a mass of over excited players, hehe. A lot of pre nge servers.....mmmmm, yes please
See why people hates SoE?
No one is asking to update the game but to open few servers with the game client of 2003.
Their refusal to admit defeat is so unbelieavebly stupid, it's beyond belief
This post is full of ignoring of facts.
First their 'refusal to admit defeat', theyve publicly apologized and several people have said it was a mistake. And as someone else said, its not solely their call to open the server up anyway. Its LAs call as well and they likely dont have the data around anyway.
But this whole 'mass of over excited players'...SWG was a FAILURE. its subs were somewhere between 160k and 180k and dropping like a stone. thats not far off what EQ2 has now after 6 years and EQ2s sub numbers have been steady for a while now (well before the hack anyway).
Yes, a game can easily be sustained with 160k subs, EQ2 is around there and EQ1 even lower, but the subs were falling, significantly. They were bleeding 10k subs a month. SWG was a dying game.
The majority of you believe your indentity will be stolen , someone of the millions will have their indentity stolen irregardless of if that information came from a garbage can or clever hack it will still be blamed on Sonys security breach. Everything seems to hinge on that negligence phrase doesn't it ?
Its sad that their is no proof Sony was negligent ... only claims and wild shouts from forum posters. You are fully entitled to be upset .. I never claimed otherwise. Don't put words in my mouth in an attempt to put me on the defense.
I explained the second paragraph to the best of my ability, a percieved threat is far more dangerous than an actual threat to people who based their desicions on fear. There is absolutely a need to offer a service its users are clamoring for and I laid them out as well.
The fault is Sonys, they should have better security than this.
The negative publicity is Sony's fault, the hack? eh, probably not. Im fairly convinced They would have found a way in anyway. Hackers are good. Sony just made it easier for them.
However, the fact their security was spotty means most will fully blame Sony anyway. Had these 'known secutiry issue' never came up and Sony still got hacked, people would probably even be sympathetic.
So yeah, Sony is paying the price for their negligence, just not how most people think they are paying for it. they would have had to pay for the identity theft and free time anyway, but the true cost is the cost of being perceived as the villain rather than the victim.
Truth is here is Sony is actually covering my butt in case I was careless with my Social Security information. Everyone seems to forget that people need to to get bank accounts and other things in your name.
Sony has apologised all over themselves about what has happened and like another person said some people have said there were possible mistakes. I would sure hate to be Sony right now if some of you were the judges presiding over this case. Unrelenting unforgiveness and hatred against them. I am just thankful I am able to look past people's mistakes at the good and the bad and which outways the other.
Sure some people have bad experiences with companies no matter how good of a company is because there are times when they have no control over what their employees do at that moment. If Sony was SOOOOOOO bad then I would imagine there would be a WHOLE lot more complaints against them at the BBB and they would not have a business rating of A+ would they? Hmmmm what a conept to the reality that the cryers are the moniority here.
Everything seems to hinge on that negligence phrase doesn't it ?

There is no proof? Sonys CIO admitted they didn't do enough and they were running known vulnerabilities. They were storing some financial and personal information information unencrpyted. They were not PCI compliant. They were storing information that was outdated in databases that were not even being used. The list goes on.
Perhaps you view those as no big deal, but if Sony had not commited those failures we would not be having this disucssion. This only occured as a result of Sonys incompetence.
I'm not putting words in your mouth either. Here is exactly what you said in post #66

Originally posted by teakbois Originally posted by Loke666 The fault is Sonys, they should have better security than this.

They did say that CC #'s definitely did get out in the open.
And did all of you not read the statement in it's entirety? They said that similar theft portection would be made available OUTSIDE the US as well.
And ZOMG what a bunch of whiners. No wonder all of you are burnt out on games no one can ever do anything good enough for you. You all sound like a bunch of little kids. Just like people who play WOW!!! And look at WoW the more people complain the worse it gets.
So I am content therewith with what Sony has offered me and yes up to now what has this really cost anyone here in $ other than time loss on the game? Myself it cost me some time to go get a new bank account because it seemed that mine didn't care enough about my security. I did a few things to ensure my ONLINE shopping is SAFER!! And put a fraud report in. Now when the game comes up I will sign ip for the protection and be covered for probably any losses that may be incurred due to this will be covered by a program that Sony is paying for to say that they want to help keep me safe. So I am most definatly not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
So I lost nothing but a little time taken to secure myself better which I should have been doing in the first place!
Curious...
You went as far as changing your bank because you felt the former didn't do enough for your security, but you go right back to SOE who compromised your data to begin with!?
This is a good question to ask, but a very poor way to look at it. People feel entitled to more because this has left them feeling under-valued as customers. That and the fact they have been going without their fix for a while etc. What Sony has offered can be deemed reasonable, but when you look at it, it is the minumum you can do, I think 30 days of gametime, and some fluff is probably the minimum people have expected. A lot of people will accept this, but not be happy with it.
The reason its a poor way to look at it is because anyone who feel they are genuinely entitled to more, will probably just walk away from Sony at this point. 30 days is industry standard for a fuckup. If Sony had come back and offered 60 days, hell even 45 days people would have taken notice. 60 days for example shows a lot of humility and would be an very apologetic amount. It could even end up cheaper if they retained twice as many customers as a result.
The whole thing shows just how easy the gaming market is to bleed dry though. Sony know they can offer their token amount and some fluff like double exp and the majority will take it, one minority will tell them to "fuck off" and another minority will bleat about how Sony are the "best company EVAR because they could have done fuck all"
Microsoft could have cashed in heavily on the PSN being down. A lot of people apparently traded in PS3's to get an Xbox360. If Microsoft wanted to, they could have bundled an Xbox360 with 3 months of live, and cashed in. They didn't need to because enough people needed their fix of Call of Duty, that they jumped ship anyway.
People need to stop worshipping games companies and standing up for them. They can do it for themsevles anyway, none of them need people to stand there and tell the world how great they are, and theres no need to put effort into doing so because you get no reward at all. Gamers are like women in violent relationships, they continually excuse the behaviourr "they really meant it this time, they really do love me"

Yes I get this. But the hackers didnt attack Sony because of the vulnerability, that just made their job either. Sony was under attack because of political reasons and most likely still would have been hacked just the same. Hackers are persistent and VERY good at what they do.
And the CC#s were from a 2007 European database, I believe 127,000 of them was the number. The PSN CC# issue has always been 'we dont know if they got them' which seems weird to me, but those numbers are irrelevant to this thread sicne it is a SoE thread.

I didn't see Sonys CEO admiting they didn't do enough, throw me a link , if thats the case he's accepting the fault and i'll submit that he does indeed hold his own company negligent.
The other points you noted are not credible as they orginate from : Posts on forums, and reports some guy heard from some other guy.
How about some credible posts by the investigating parties , I.E Sony and/or any of the federal agencies active on this case?
They could have had the most up to date security software and personel around and someone would STILL be able to hack it.
If the hackers had not attacked Sony this wouldn't be happening, don't paint the blame on Sony because they are a tangible target and the ones who commited the act are not.
You replied with this:
"So because crime happens people shouldn't be upset that a companies negligence has drastically increased their risk to be a victim of crime? What kind of circular logic is that."
Lets not mix it up .. I never said people shouldn't be upset, so you did indeed put words in my mouth.
I encourage all of you to goto soe.com and look at some of the statements and press releases. They detail what happened, to whom, and how much information was stolen. The only peoples who actually have any need of the indentity protection are outside of the U.S , they did indeed suffer substantial fiscal identity information loss.
Sony adding server management and configuration tools as well as more firewalls. If the network was up to date and had proper firewalls, then these things would not need to be added.

2.) Free game time? Right, big whoop. People are still being BILLED for their accounts when everything related to Sony is offline.
TLDR Sony are inept, greedy clowns and if this last circlejerk doesn't leave that glaringly blatant there's no hope for you.
nope..they will never get my biz. ever again...even sold my ps3 and about 25 games ...not to mention that every mmo they make is great for the 1st 4-6 months then utter fail cuz they make some dumbass change to the game or no changes at all! im soo done with SOE r.i.p

The second point proves nothing, you know that right? When you get hacked, of course you will add more security. You can bet your ass Blizzard is adding more security as well as any other major MMO developer. Again, Sony didnt get hacked because their security sucked. they got hacked because they were targetted for different reasons. the security flaws probably just made it easier.

Newsflash: 99% of companies are greedy.
You think any other company would have done different? Then there is no hope for you as well. And dont even try to say 'well any other company wouldnt have gotten hacked', because that is very much doubtful given how skilled these hackers are.

So you think someones motivations make it easier to hack a network? The reason behind an attack will somehow make it more effective?
Sony got hacked, because their network was vulnerable. The person in charge of Sonys network admitted it had serious vulnerabilities. It does not get any more concrete than that. Also you do not add firewalls to a network unless there was one missing. The same goes for configuration software, unless your network didn't already have it.
The first and second point both prove the vulnerabilities. Perhaps you don't understand what is being said or what it means?
On top of that the security firm Sony hired says there are still multiple security vulnerabilities in their network. THREE WEEKS LATER.
I think it is safe to say that you can stop pretending things were fine in the Sony network and making excuses and apologies. The Sony network was a mess and that is why they got hacked.

I never said things were fine in the Sony network. But thats not why it got hacked.
I think this is reasonable and adequate offerings. Basically a free month is huge plus days that they had server down for this month is beyond 30 days free. You also get double exp and some other events which can be very good loots like the portal event a month or so back in EQ2. For SWG the in house item is trivial I agree. Overall this is not bad, it's a big loss to them though all those free months plus extra days down added on.
I don't understand what more people want out of it, your already getting a free month+ and extras, be happy.
