I have played RIFT for almost a month (non-consecutive play- but a few days each time). I did what i usually do with every new mmo: i play all classes and create alts all the time(acute alt-itis). But on this recent free trial i decided to get seriously into pvp.
Now b4 i get misunderstood..i really like RIFT and i despise WoW. I am glad that all casual mmo players now have more than one obvious choice. But i never expect to see what i saw in PVP and in particular the Warfronts....
And no this has nothing to do with class balances(eventhough i was amazed to see so many pets in a mini game , and they did most of the fighting while their master was hiding behind the trees-pathetic). It has to do with the whole feeling...it trully seems PVE-ish! And worst of all..the point rewarding system in conjuction with dmg and killing is so confusing..
And btw..isn't there any open world PvP after all or are Warfronts all that Rift will get in the PVP department?
Any directions as to where i am wrong and where/when does pvp get better?

Well as far as PvP being like PvE, I guess technically combat works exactly the same like in most other games in this genre so I don't get your point. Yeah there's lots of pets because it's easy to pick up a 0 pt soul with a pet in it to boost your dmg and add a distraction, especially when you start out. Also depending on your bracket strategies change. So for example in the 10-19 bracket you see a lot of rogues rolling ranged w/ pet, something like MM because in this bracket with what you have available they tend to outperform melee rogues. Later on when more abilities are available and different scenarios present themselves they may be more inclined to switch to melee especially if that was their original conceptualization.
As far as awarding points goes, the more people you kill, the more death blows you deal, the more you heal for, the more damage you take, etc. the more points you get. Essentially the more you contribute to the battle the greater the reward you are likely to receive. By the same token the reward also varies based on whether you win or lose obviously being greater if your team is victorious.
Yes, there's open world pvp and they have said they are working to add some RvR. There's also Ancient Wardstones and the new rift events that relate to open world pvp as well.
PvP in rift is the same as any other game that takes it's cues from WoW/Warhammer/Tab target 123 combat. I don't mean that as an insult actually because I am happily subscribed to Rift atm.

I agree with you in some cases but me and my friend is actually having a blast in Rift.
We are a 100% pvp guild and do alot of premades and do not know if you have tried any pvp at lvl 50 ?
Atm there is no reason to pvp in the open world except if you want to gank some.
Can be fun though when there is invasion to just go in with 10 man against a raid of 20+ people while they are doing a rift.
So pvp in rift is fun, the classes and the strategy is amazing if you ask me even though there is some class balance, group pvp is acutallly really good and balanced.
To bad there is only 4 small and I mean very small warfronts with only one objective in each.
If you ask me Trion should make more warfronts, one small and one really really big, plus giving pvp player some reason to get out in the world, can be something simple as a few daily pvp quest holding a bunker or something.
PvP in Rift is a mixed bag right now. WF are fun if you have a guild or a few friends you can join up with. If you just random enter you win or get rolled. Open world PvP is on PvP servers and there you'll get ganked out side towns 24/7 as with any MMO's. So really hard to tell you what game to play for "True" PvP.
Played Aoc/DDO/FFXI/WAR / LoTRo / CO / Aion
Playing Rift
Waiting for FFXIV to be the game it should. so sad =(
Man I've had a totally different experience than you. I've definitely been playing on a PvP server since launch and while there's no end to the players of the opposite faction I run into I have not experienced being ganked outside towns 24/7 for even a second of this game. In fact I might say compared to most other titles in this genre I've been ganked less than ever. I know different people/servers have different experiences so you certainly might have dealt with this while I have not. I think it's worth adding that if you don't want to run that risk don't roll on a PvP server.
Also if might be worth mentioning it's easy to kill people in towns in Rift as the guards/townsfolk are no tougher than an equivilant lvl NPC 99% of the time. I start pvp in shared/enemy towns all the time for fun.

Not really, its has a D and a F in it.
lol very true Darkfall has some amazing PvP. Personally, I'll be back to Agon in the near future to check out all the nice new patches.

Rift Pvp = WoW pvp with zero balance.
Rifts pvp is just another feature to get the thing to sell, this game will be dead the minute Guild Wars 2 or anything simular arrives.
Pretty much that, except isn't it only a WoW BG PvP it carries over? Scott himself during the betas said they are not really intrested in PvP balance, their response was "find a build to beat it" which they said they'll only intervene if there was an OMG build that noone can beat. Which even then the question is how long would it take Trion to finally acknowledge such build and how long it would take them to implement changes.
Early on Rift was selling their product with PvP features and yet it is so far from an normal acceptable standard it's ridiculous. I have no intrest in a game when a company blatently doesn't care bout balance.
The problem with Rift''s PvP is it has no point. I can do warfronts to get gear so I can warfront...or hit rank 6 so I can be rank 6....Theres no point beyond that, no world PvP objectives, no RvR objectives and other than ganking people turning in quests or killing mobs, theres next to no world PvP at all.
