My feelings about GW2!

Jimmy2HatJimmy2Hat Member Posts: 10

Hi Guys, apologies for the wall of text.

I'm new to the forum and just wanted to write my feelings about GW2, although I do make a lot of WoW references.

I first started playing MMO's when I was 17. I started with WoW just before BC launched. I had never played an MMO previously but having seen the ad on T.V I decided to try it. My initial disapointment with the game (having never played a PC game before it took me ten minutes to work out WASD) quickly evaporated and a week later I was hooked and I played right up to the middle of wrath. I played as hardcore as I could taking into account I worked long hours and eventually ended getting married and having children :). I havn't really played much Cataclysm as Starcraft 2 is awesome!

During this period I was always on the lookout for "the next big thing" in the MMO scene. Don't misunderstand me it wasn't because I found WoW unenjoyable, quite the contrary I enjoyed my time with WoW immensely, but I always felt someone, somewhere could do more; make something better. I was excited about a few games, AoC, Lotro, and more recently FFXIV and Rift. All showed great promise, but having tried them all, they seemed to lack the polish of WoW. It's hard to put a finger on the exact reason none of these games took me in, maybe it was just sheer lack of familiarity or not being able to play with the friends I had made in WoW. I confess I didn't give any of them a second look after the inital try out because I just didn't enjoy them as much as and ultimately we all play these games for enjoyment.

I had heard about GW2 quite a while ago but only recently did I take the time to look into the game. I can categorically say I am glad that I did. I think the guys at Arenanet are doing an absolutely sterling job on this game. From the art (which I think is stunning) to the dynamic events system, they seem to be giving the fantasy MMO genre a refreshing, well needed shake-up and making a game I think a lot of people are going to love. I just hope and pray to the MMO gods, that when all the pre-launch hype is over, and people are playing the game, they will succeed where others have failed and have a game that's as good as they are making it out to be. If it is, I will be a happy man and even happier if Totalbiscuit plays the beta and puts tons of Vod's up!

Thanks for reading.

    Welcome to the club Jimmy!

I wantet to try and answer the question you asking in you post about not being able to enjoy other MMO because they lack the polish WoW had. Now i started playing MMOs when i was 14 (i'm 21 now) and i can say it took me a long time before i could enjoy any other mmo the same way i did my first one (which was ffxi, not a really good game). It's just something magical with the first MMO you play. And another thing you, started playing before BC launched thats a lot of time Blizzard had to polish the game before you started playing. No MMO has a 100% polished release. A game you mentioned Rift had 2 hours queues and farly many bugs, and got a lot of praised because it was suprisingly polished launch.

The reason i say this is because i think you might be missing out on a lot of great titles. A golden rule i follow when playing a new MMO is don't compare it negativly with MMO's you've played before. I think Guild Wars 2 will have a good launch altough i am sure it will not be perfect.

I think the biggest problem I have is time! As I have gotten older the time i've had to try new things has diminished. It is a shame I wish I had given some other titles a better chance, who knows if I win the lottery...

Welcome to the club, Jimmy. With a class reveal coming this month and the start of the convention season, it's only going to get worse. Especially when beta starts.
