ive come to the forums today for basically guidance. Me and my long time game friend constantly argue over this subject. He played daoc breifly and quit and i played it extensivly. His main arguement is its basically just good memories for me and dont realize how shitty it is compared to todays games such as WoW.
i argued with him today about the style system in daoc, and styles like positionals or parrys/block react attacks. his arguement was every game has that and daoc didnt come up with anything original. He explained how WoW has backstab/evis which to me is nothing like daoc.
please post comments on what you think and whos side u take!

*sigh
If he didnt play it then he cant argue it. It is like someone saying SWG sucks but they never played pre-CU.... Oh the memories...
Sub to me on YouTube @ http://www.youtube.com/user/JJJK29isGaming?feature=mhee
I'm a former long time DAOC player too.
You are both right to some extent. DAOC is the best PVP/RVR system that I have played to date. WOW is a good game as well but on the PVE side. WOW's pvp sucks while DAOC's pve sucks in comparison to each other. (Trials of atlantis, was the beginning of the end for me)
I have the same issue with one of my buddies. He's a WOW baby. (it was his first mmo) So there really is no arguing with him. He just keeps throwing sub numbers and I keep telling him the vast majority of those numbers are Chinese, lol.
I've played both games, as well as, everything else that's come down the pike and to this day think DAOC is the best game I have ever played. It pretty much just boils down too your personal taste and you might as well agree to disagree on this one. Unless you just like to argue that is.
Arguments not really relevant.
Both are classics for their own reason.
In all fairness, DAoC did it first, and i dont think wow would have battlegrounds without it. however i think wow got famous on its vanilla open world pve game, the pvp battlegrounds just kept people there who had burned out on that stuff.
In my eyes its like fighting over which color is best..
I am not sure I would call Wow "todays games", it released in late 2004 and is not that much newer than DaoC. Blizzard have done a better job than Mythic with the updating part but both games are still pretty old.
Saying that one game is better than the other isn't exactly easy.
DaoC on one hand had many pretty unique ideas and is still the best RvR game around.
On the other hand is Wow well coded (unlike DaoC) and have a really nice art syle and a huge world.
I think I must give Wow the edge still, because it is getting a lot more love nowadays than DaoC gets. At least if you prefer PvE, I can't in good conscience give Wow any edge for PvP at all.
Your friend is wrong about DaoC not inventing something new, the whole 3 faction RvR idea it have is brilliant but sadly have no other game copied it, even if GW2 will put 3 different servers against eachother for a 1 week long huge PvP battleground with hundreds of players.
But I think that if you both want to play a game together you have to make a compromize here. Get a third game instead.
ok ok you cant really argue WoW vs DAoC i understand, WoW was definetly not aimed towards pvp, and is really a total different game in most aspects.
But what we can argue is little specific things in both games.
For example i really cant think of a game that has a counter style that only pops up when you block/parry/dodge not that i played every mmo thought.
And if you wana compare wow and daoc will WoWs pvp ever compare to DAoC pvp. its been argued that to maintain a high WoW arena bracket you need to be skilled in the game. But for me to be in a good 8man DAoC roam group you need much more skill then WoW involves.
listen in terms of WoW vs DAoC... as of now WoW wins it has millions of players to daocs 2000, but i truly think if DAoC 2 came out with not many changes, it would probably beat WoW.
Well ive played both and Daoc wins in both PvE and PvP.
PvE in WoW is like multiplayer in a normal game where in Daoc you could have 1-200 players in a raid and then go do stuff thats real mmo in WoW its nothing like that, WoWs world is also real small when compared to Daoc so not that much to explore imho.
Crafting in Daoc is a million times better than WoWs so there Daoc wins again.
Housing in Daoc... need i say anymore.... its fking awesome and its a shame WoW aint got the will to implement it.
PvP is the endgame of Daoc and thats where you should enjoy the game whereas WoWs endgame dosnt even give an MMO feeling but more like a multiplayer feeling.
So all in all Daoc is a much better game for me, but the game is old, but if they make a Daoc 2 ile be back;)
DAoC/GW/Lotro/WoW/WAR/Rift/SWTor
totally.. and 100 percent agree.. DAOC 2 FTW... .. sadly.. its right up there with my wish for a pre-cu SWG server.. though hopefully not as unlikely...
WHAT ???
When WoW came out, all I heard was "WoW classes have been designed for PvP first, thats why the PvP is so great" etc.
Just because WoW isnt as good as DAoC in PvP doesnt mean its not designed for it.
I should know. In Lineage 2, I was a Shillien Elder and that class was just cannon fodder, nothing else.
DAoC had a fantastic combat queue system.
You can queue say a block reactive move, but in case you don't block the next attack, you can also queue the 1st move of a 3 move chain. When your next attack then comes the game does the block reactive, if you've blocked, or the other move, if you haven't.
So my standard combat actions would be:
Block reactive (or parry reactive, or evade reactive)+1st in chain
Block reactive (or parry reactive, or evade reactive)+2nd in chain
3rd in chain on its own (the 3rd move was better than the block reactive or parry reactive, or evade reactive)
If at any point the reactive fired off my next move would then be the 2nd attack in my block reactive chain.
If I needed to get the proc effect from my block reactive I could use whatever the was that stopped you attacking and increased your block rate to 99%, then go straight into the block chain.
This is a great system that I have not found anywhere else. Combat involved far more reaction to what was happening rather than a set rotation all the time.
I can run a lot of WoW content with a macro on my controller: Simply pick a target, click the macro knowing that it is the best rotation of skills for that fight. You couldn't do that in DAoC - you'd miss out on SO much potential DPS and secondary effects by not reacting to what was going on.
Oh, and someone claimed DAoC and WoW are same generation - Wikipedia says
Dark Age of Camelot - October 10, 2001
World of Warcraft - November 23, 2004
More than 3 years difference, which is an eternity in a business that only existed since a douzen years or so.
Don't bother arguing with WoW generation of gamers who started gaming with WoW and never tried anything before. Everybody, including Blizzard's lead devs, give credit to older games like Everquest. That's because they know WoW was designed based on older games. So to say older games did "nothing new" is quite laughable.
One thing Blizzard did right was to take older ideas and revamping them into their own version, which often is an upgraded and sometimes improved versions of these ideas. But it doesn't mean they're all new ideas, they're just upgraded and improved ideas. WoW is considered a "today's game" not based on their graphics, but mostly how they have been consistently upgrading their systems each expansion and adding some new features which proved to be useful in the genre, such as the cross server instance queue system.
DAOC was the bomb, it was a one of a kind MMO that gave us RvR & castle siege fun. Back in the days it was unique, the position, reactionary, & chained style of melee combat were very special. The way they differentiated piercing vs thrust vs blunt vs slash, etc.. were also very cool, it added so much element into the gameplay. It was not a 1 size fits all type of combat, it made you think and made you switch based on what class you are fighting and what they are wearing. Anybody that tries to put down DAOC have never played DAOC or they never got past level 10.
Gosh I'd kill to get Mark Jacobs to create a DAOC 2. Just talking about it made me realize how good DAOC was and how...I don't want to say dumbed down as it's offensive, but let's just say "watered down" the combat of today's games are.

wow class balance was designed for pve first. they didnt really try to balance for pvp that much as it just wasnt important. wow didnt even HAVE pvp content until 8 months or so AFTER release. very obvious pvp wasnt a priority at all, but not so strange considered the lead devs were former eq raiders. this is why wow's core was built around eq style pve gameplay, although over the years theyve added more pvp.
DAOC ftw

Which FF Character Are You?
Daoc was, and still is so much better than WoW it is silly to even compare them. WoW is Mc'donalds compared to Daoc's gourmet chef-made feast.
A lot more people eat mcdonalds, but does that make it better? I think not.
