Probably a thread about this already...but still...this one comment just brought me to this game...thought that Bioware was avoiding this, glad they aren't!

Yeah, first thing I want to know on any announced mmorpg. Now there's only praying for rp-pvp servers left.

Im not much of a role player, but I can see where an rp pvp server in Kotor could be really fun.

First, I'd like to say, I'm all for PvP servers.

Second, is a server going to serve all planets? Or will each planet be managed by different servers?

    Playing | GW2
    Wanting | Pantheon
    Watching | Crowfall
Retired | WAR, Cabal, MO, CO, SHK, WoW, FFXIV: ARR

If one server only served one planet, then you would never be able to leave that planet and therefore BioWare's whole idea of a vast galaxy spanning store would be impossible.  Even on a PvP server the story is still going to affect the game.

I really hope they don't think just being able to kill the player of the opposing faction in open world is PvP.

Rift did that mistake and AoC did it in magnitudes.

Open World PvP is really about being able to conquer and benefit, not some meaningless OBs and forts WAR did (it was fun, but it didn't last). I'm afraid SWTOR will be another PvE game with PvP afterthought, sadly.

Allow me to disagree. Killing in open world just for the fun of it IS an important part of the world pvp concept. 2 factions are at war, why do i need an excuse or an objective to kill someone? I spot him doing his quests or whatever and waste him. It's funnier this way and can lead to some very exciting pvp situations. Besides, imagining someone blowing steam behind his screen after you killed him a number of times is quite amusing.

I can agree with you to a point Shodanas.  I like PvP when everyone is on an even playing feild, level wise, powers is all up to how you pick and slot them.  What I have noticed in MOST open world PvP though is nothing more than bullying players who delite in decimating people 5 or more levels below them, just because they can.  Personally, I always made it a habit to hunt this type of immature player myself, but there is so many of them out there that PvP is turned into a joke and that seems to be why the majority of players avoid Open World PvP.  Very few games that have both PvP AND PvP seem to have a strong PvP population, and I would be willing to bet this is why.

Not, with that being said, I don't think Open World PvP should be abolished by any means.  I do believe that some sort of equalizing factor needs to be implemented though.  There are several ways it can be accomplished too, here are two:

    1)  Zone Level limitations.  Not a great idea to be honest in my opinion.

    2)  Level and gear equalization.  Simply make it so that IF you attack someone your level is reduced to theirs and you gear is also reduced to the best they can get at their level.  This option is great for weeding out the bully boys.

I am sure I will be flamed for my OPINION here, but I am just as sure that most of the people flaming me will be of the bully boy variety.

    Not flaming but respectfully disagreeing.

I think that on pvp servers world pvp should have little to no restrictions. Not because I really want to be able to gank lowbies, but I honestly like high levels taking a shot on ganking me :) It makes the world a more exciting place. And I'm always verry happy with myself when I get jumped by someone with a higher level and having him eat the dust instead, while losing wouldn't be so shameful anyway. (I also often purposely attacked higher leveled players in that regard).

Having modifiers would make character level and advancement an artificial thing. I prefer that those who have put more hours and effort in their character have an advantage. There will be a day when you are of similar level and you have the option to take revenge on those who might have wronged you.

It is a good thing that Swtor will have dedicated world pvp areas also on pve servers though, so those who can't stand being ganked occasionaly but like some world pvp at times are fully catered for. But pvp servers should be with as little restriction and modifiers as possible.

Also note that starter worlds won't be accesible to the other faction which is already a huge protective measure for lowbies by itself.

RP-PvP servers don't exist. They should be called PvP-RP instead. Everytime I try to RP before a fight, I'm writing while getting ganked and then when I'm dead, the person(s) who killed me starts RP'ing... Grrrr!

Hehe, fair enough. Pvp-rp is fine with me as well. It pains me though that Bioware doesn't realize out of the box that there is a small but very dedicated crowd for those: people who like realism and immersion in their game and naturally also like the freedom of having true enemies to attack and watch out for wherever you go. It might be a small crowd compared to normal pvp or pve server folks, but pvp-rp very much defines my personal taste. Having to leave out one of the two would be a huge sacrifice in my eyes.

I get the feeling you and I agree more than we disagree DarkPony.  I have no problem with someone trying to take on the "Big Dogs".  I have a problem with a Level 70 beating on Level 12's just for the heck of it.  Anyone within about 5 levels of another person is fair game and for me I would only attack people even with or up to 4 levels higher.  That makes it an actual challenge worth overcoming.

Picking on the small guy because you can is (IMO) immature and shows nothing more than a  lack of skills, basically a grade school bully.  Unfortunately, the population of these bullies is amazingly large in an open PvP area, while the mature PvPer population is amazingly small (from my own observations).

As for the starter world argument, I see you point.  Unfortunately it is a VERY small portion of SWTOR.

I am not sure i follow either you or GMan3 here. Because what i discribed in my reply definitely does NOT fall into the griefing gategory. 6 years on a RP - PvP realm in WoW  i never attacked someone of lower level unless he had it coming. When i am in the right mood i do charge at every level caped horde on sight. Why? Simply because that's the reason i rolled on a pvp server. And i excpect the others to be on the same mindset otherwise why do they play on such a realm? It's not like they had no other options.

As for killing someone more than once, that's no big deal. In most situations the one who dies seeks a chance to get even. If the other guy is more skilled or plays a class which is a tad overpowered this can lead to the victim dying a couple more times. Happens to me as well. Some days ago an Orc shaman kept handing my ass on a golden plate for 30'. He was good, really good so finally i gave up tryin to get revenge.

  • Ender4Ender4 Member UncommonPosts: 2,247

Attacking someone first isn't griefing in any way. If getting attacked is going to somehow ruin your day you don't play on a PvP server because you just don't enjoy PvP. In my opinion you can't have a RP server without it being PvP. Conflict is the center of RP, not just trying to talk with a funny accent, dancing all the time and trying to cyber people.

  • chiksochikso Member Posts: 150

Just keep in mind even on pvp servers not all planets will have open world pvp, though hopefully the ones that do will have some sort of objectives/conquer type of stuff.

  • SirBalinSirBalin Member UncommonPosts: 1,300

When talking about reason to kill someone and the griefers etc...I think you need to have consenquences when killing your own faction, but killing the opposing faction is what you should do.  Now if I kill my own faction...it should turn me toward rebel/imperial.  I am just so glad they are having pvp servers...any word on player bounties?

As always with an MMORPG, things may change in the future, but player bounties are not planned for the launch of The Old Republic.

There will apparently be PvP zones on PvE servers, just like the RvR lakes in War. So there will be some reasons behind the PvP in those "lakes". You also need a certain Valor (Renown in War) level to equip certain gear, so world pvp (or ganking) will probably get some buff in that fashion. Aside from that, I don't really know what advantages there are to world PvP.
