I'm excited for this game, very much want it to be good.
However, that Warfront (is that what they are called?) video, showing pvp, looked so terrible.
People standing perfectly still shooting or hitting each other, no reaction from anyone unless they died. That could be because game mechanics aren't in place, animations aren't finished, etc.
But if that's indicative of the kind of combat we can expect, that's a little bit scary in how boring and unexciting it looks.

Or it could be because it is hotkey combat exactly as we see in WoW, WAR, and .
Why did i say that? Because in ANY hotkey MMO made today we stand still, press hotkeys every second until someone dies or others show up. Contrary to what they say thats what their combat is like. I want everyone reading this to go watch any cobat video, MUTE IT so you cannot hear the dev talking about how awesome it is, and then watch the combat unfold. Just watch it.
Just wanna go on record i agree with you Luro.
It is best for the industry the MMO throne remains an dusty empty seat never to be filled.

Not really. Circle strafing was very widely used in pvp in AoC, another "hotkey MMO", players were moving constantly.
As for combat in SWTOR, non-edited footage already showed players moving around while in combat, either lightsabre swinging or shooting their blaster and rockets while running or strafing.
The vast majority of people who actually played the game in demos so far stated that they liked how combat and pvp worked in SWTOR, I'd say over 90% of all the reactions of players, a number of them were pleasantly surprised because they hadn't expected it going in with a negatively prejudiced state of mind towards the combat. I guess there's quite the difference between watching a game or playing a game
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
Yes MMO.Maverick Guild Wars 2 delay wasn't expected, and I agree both ( although in different ways ) SWTOR and GW2 will have an effect on MMO's, and gamers.
I'll also agree with you Rift was/is a decent game, with a polished launch that drew in a crowd, but now to why I highlighted in yellow. I feel I am a 'true MMO' player. not the new breed of enter, rush to cap, play 'endgame' til bored, find a new title.
I've crafted, explored, been in guilds, been a guild officer, when the plague that NGE was swept through my guild town, I stood firm, even as it swept the population aside. I do not want to chase the next big hit, I do not like running to Gamestop, and pre-ordering the next launch to recieve the extra pvp map pack.
Developers now use the term 'persistant world' to say it's a feature of their product, yet the RP'ers are teased for wanting immersion. So as a 'true MMO gamer' I don't want to be immersed in my game world? I don't want to persistantly explore, and be engaged by it?
I get an MMO today to ride a themepark from level 1-50/65/80/etc getting new gear to symbolize my advancement? I want to re-entertain the same dungeon over, and over to grind out a better helmet? I want to capture the same flag over and over, win.. loose.. don't matter. because when you get to 5,000 'points' I have these nifty gloves?
Where is my online community from before? My crafters that I interact with? MMO's used to be living breathing, thriving communities? Why must I get my gear from a PvP merchant? or a 'boss'?
Does Seal team six go out and PvP bin Laden for a new rifle? Did Nike travel overseas and kill the animal for a new cross trainer?
Maybe I am a sand box over themepark MMO player.. problem is all new sandbox mmo's are full loot pvp gank-fests. ( I'm looking at you Earthrize, darkfall ) So looking forward. Where is the UO's, the DAoC, the pre-NGE SWG style games?
EVERY new game is a quest hub, instance dungeon, themepark. With crafting added as an after thought, or sub par with Quest / pvp gear. None have open housing, or player communities. And all basically get selected by holy trinity group dynamic.
You say: " then maybe instead of complaining year after year it's time to consider looking elsewhere for gaming enjoyment, cause it sounds like a case of chronic MMO burnout or persistent mismatch between MMO's and such people to me "
I say: The current development cycle to cater to the casual console type new game every 2-3 months crowd, has shattered the Massive Multiplayer Communities that used to thrive in MMO's, and until a developer realizes their themepark crowd rides the new ride in 2-3 months, it's the community that stays playing. We will continue to get a new themepark ride with all the benifits of that themepark plus our new logo cycle.
Well said, my feelings exactly!
SWG was a game i LIVED ... every other game after that was a grind grind grind to cap --> next game.
I'm playing Rift ... honestly because i can't find anything better right now ... but again i feel absolutely no connection to my toon in yet another shallow carrot-on-a-stick gear-grind theme park.
I think it's time to play a few singleplayers again ... i loved witcher, so part 2 looks promising.
I promise you all, if I'ld ever be rich (no chance, always gaming :P ), i would make an improved SWG.
Eventho I will still buy and play the game, I still feel that they have make a wrong choice in combat gameplay. They should have use a TERA type of combat gameplay. Like a TPS you can shoot and hide behind the tree and do not need to use The cover systems. The cover system is the most stupid idea that I have ever heard of .

The cover system is used in their Mass Effect games and also seen in other games like Gears of War, I didn't find it impractical or stupid in combat when I played those games.
Hiding behind a tree or wall will break line of sight for all classes in SWTOR, just like in most MMO's.
I'd have liked to see TPS or ME-like combat mechanics in SWTOR as well, but that doesn't mean that how the combat is now can't be fun. I mean, it didn't prevent me from having fun in KOTOR how the combat worked in that game.

I like how people complain about "hotkeying" and "button mashing". It is normally the self avowed console lovers that make these complaints too. Somehow pressing "x, y, x, y, left, right, up" is so superioir to get your combo hit off over "1, 2, 3, 4". Seriously though, if you want to see button mashing, try playing "Defender" on the old Atari 2600 at about level 25. Now THAT is button mashing!
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
We probably need Ben Kenobi now more than ever if we're going to have a decent mmo for 2011. NcSoft made it official that the GW2 mmo will go in closed beta by the end of the year. That all but eliminates the majority of possibilities we will see GW2 in 2011 unless a small miracle happens. Are there any other hopes for 2011 ? Honestly, it looks like online rts and rpg games will reign supreme yet again. Lets pray that The Old Republic has a good launch.
I gave up 4 months ago and shifted to Mount&Blade games. At least I will be able to see where my arrows hit and stick. Saved myself a ton of money with no subs playing the the mods. Yet, I have high hopes hat the MMORPG world will come up with something.
I'm excited for this game, very much want it to be good.

Just wanna go on record i agree with you Luro.
I don't entirely agree, the only one i have a lot of pvp experience with is wow, but in wow, you see druids shifting to get away, you see fears, sheeps, roots going off. You see rogues vanishing and mages blinking away, locks demonic circling up to a higher platform, you see people trying to los.
In that video, and i fully admit it might just be that video, you saw both sides, in an open field, standing perfectly still and shooting or swinging at each other, no movement, no variation. I was saying it's a really bad promo video because of that.
I would love something new in as far as combat in an mmo goes, i actually like themepark games, but they have pretty much said we can't expect anything really new as far as combat goes. But if it's literaly people lining up and hitting buttons, that i do have a problem with, because it's what i saw.
I also find it hard to beleive a AAA developer backed by one of the largest videogame companies in the world is making a game where there is no cc, no need to los, and no escape mechanizms for characters. I just wish they would show something in a hype video.

While that video may not have shown it, it is known that every class has some form of CCs and usually more then one.
Invis seems to be the escape machanic of choice for this game. as for LoS, you can hide behind barriers to break LoS and a couple of classes actually have a mechanic for doing so allowing you to hide behind barriers. Of which is a timing game of sorts. You gotta know the pattern the enemy attacks so you know when to come out of cover.
If what Bioware says to be true about the AI, then the enemies will try and break LoS with you by running behind barriers and ducking behind cover to shoot you. They are suppose to also have force powers that can stun you and push you back. (mind you not all enemies will have this, especially in the early levels where the player is still learning). I'm not expecting miracles with the AI or anything but if what they say is true then i don't see much standing at the mob and hacking away at later levels with all the CCs, push backs, mobs moving around and things like that.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

This thread and the title itself make me lol. Single Player games have better stories and typically better gameplay than MMO's.
People are again overhyping another MMO that has yet to be out and as such people will complain and cry when the game comes out and it is yet again another generic mmo. Sorry but Guild Wars with lightsabers isn't my cup of tea.
SWG Pre-CU > ToR.
When did you start playing "old school" MMO's. World Of Warcraft?
I am still enjoying playing DCU, I am still seeing a lot of friends enjoying RIFT I am still hopeful over ToR and Tera (which seems to have done well in the east without being a typical grind fest). Lets be honest, Rift and DCU despite having issues are still better games than anything mainstream thats been released since TBC. People on this site not withstanding most are still posative about the outlook for 2011

Nah this year will mostly be none MMOs it seems, SWTOR is looking to be bad once you get past your solo instanced story line. Won't be buying it until people get to the endgame and confirm there's actually something decent to do and the PvP isn't a big let down.

Nice try, but Atari has already confirmed to the media that they are going to still fund the Neverwinter project Cryptic is working on. From IGN:
Citing an Atari earnings statement, Gamasutra has gleaned details about Atari's relationship with developer Cryptic Studios.
As of March 31st, Atari is divesting its interest in the studio, working to sell it at some point in time. Atari has made it clear that it will continue to support both Star Trek Online and Champions Online, but doesn't see the studio as part of its long-term goal of "fewer but more profitable releases."
Gamasutra has also been informed that work will continue as normal on Cryptic's Neverwinter project.

As much as I like Star Wars, I'm getting real tired of the same old MMO formula that brings no new mechanics or gameplay to the table.
There's only so much "push button to slap bad guy for shinies" I can take.
