In a new post on the DC Universe Online forums, it has been confirmed that Chris Cao is indeed leaving Sony Online Entertainment. While not mentioning Cao by name, the producer's letter introduces "new game director Mark Anderson". The letter also talks about Update 3 and progress the team is making towards getting out.
Finally, I would like to announce that we have a new Game Director for DC Universe Online, Mark Anderson. Mark was the Art Director for DCUO at launch and was dually responsible for the game’s combat system. Joining us from the God of War team, Mark has over the years been one of the most creative and passionate members of the DCUO team and we are very excited for the vision he has for the game moving forward. If you see Mark (aka MAnderson) in the forums make sure to say hi and tell him to get back to work.

now that is good or bad..? i guess only time will tell...
@sodade
Eh, clearly there was some real bad choices in direction with DCUO and after the downtime/bad publicity, Sony needs to show theat they're making immediate 180s and not just waiting for the next exit to do some off-ramp/on-ramp hackery to get going the other direction.
I know several people getting out of their PS3 for 360s, my local craigslist sees at least a dozen different listings a week for PS3 and 4~/week for 360s.
Square's in the same position with FF14, noone really argues how bad the game sucks only that a typically non-communicative company is doing everything they can to answer what players are saying.
Spec'ing properly is a gateway drug.
12 Million People have been meter spammed in heroics.
I've never actually brought the game but I was in the beta and recently found that I had 45 days free which is mighy nice of SOE . I must say I was suprised that it seamed to lack any server with a signifcant population . Now and then I see another player but its very quiet . Still I'm a big fan of DC and am enjoying it as virtually a single player game . A freebies always nice . Obviously SOE need to claw back some subs after whats happened not sure if Chris Caos depature will be good or bad for this game or not . Whatever happens it will be an uphill stuggle . Its a shame because I think its not a terrible game but for me it would never be worth a standard monthly sub of 15 dollars .
Sad Cao is Sad.
I'm not sad, the guy isn't creative at all. Anyone can yell MONKIES! at a design meeting, it doesn't deserve a lead designer promotion. Hopefully DCUO Gets rolling again, but I doubt it... the damage is already done.
'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.
When your head is stuck in the sand, your ass becomes the only recognizable part of you.
No game is more fun than the one you can't play, and no game is more boring than one which you've become familiar.
How to become a millionaire:
Start with a billion dollars and make an MMO.
There we go, now it is official. Fire away!
I will admit that Cao seemed like a jerk most of the time. Had a cool personallity when doing videos with pre-selected questions, but when answering off the cuff, he faltered a bit.
And then there was the whole "DCUO is designed to be played for 5 hours a week" bit........
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
Yea when Cao stated DCUO was designed to be played for 5 hours a week I bet even some of the executives at SOE about had a heartattack.
DCUO is a decent game and all (what's there), but for $50 million bucks more than 5 hours a week was expected.
I liked DCUO when I was playing it. It just wasn`t worth the $15 per month charge to me though. If the game wasn`t pay to play, I`d go back to it. Until that happens (if ever), I`ll keep pay my $15 per month on EQ.
Imagine what would have happened if DCUO had been sold like Guild Wars: buy the box, play for free, sell fluff items in the cash shop, then sell more content as expansions a few times a year. I would have bought it just to play occasionally, even with its terrible controls (how can both keyboard/mouse and game controller be so badly done!!!). Instead of everyone leaving due to lack of content and the game practically imploding, people would play occasionally and happily buy the new expansion/content when released, as well as likely keep quite a bit of money rolling in from the cash shop.
I was quite a DC comics fan, but after trying the beta there was no way I'd pay a monthly sub for DCUO, especially when it was pretty clear before release how little there was to the game. A shame, as the core game is okay (if not great) for action style combat, the artwork/design is very nice and they could pull content from decades' worth of comics. Yet another missed opportunity.
That was a lie. They cut like 10 instances, 4 powers and 6 weapons out of the planned release schedule because they were so far behind schedule from changing core gaming systems and combat TWICE. And still had to push the release date back to get out what they did have. And they didn't even release all the content from the beta.
The good news is, every time CC leaves a game the population and quality of the game has increased...cause he drives it into the ground.
That's one down, now let's hope that Smedley is next up for the chop.
Hopefully then SOE can start to focus on the long haul of gaining some credibility.
Mmm, just reading that back and I don't think that could ever be acomplished. Hell, SOE and credibility don't even belong in the same sentence. Oh well, one can dream.
Saying a game is designed to be played 5 hours a week is just plain stupid, that is a very very VERy casual schedule, just hiding behind the whole reason of laziness to create any substantial content.

As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
