LF F2P MMO to tie me over

CammyCammy Member Posts: 864

Hey all,

Me and a few buddies are looking for a F2P MMO to tie us over before SWTOR and GW2 are released.

Sadly, nothing else is really holding our attention.

Anyways - here's a few I've researched and thought looks kinda good - I'd love some suggestions on a title to give a try. Remember, It won't be long term, just something to get me through the summer and possibly fall :)

LOTRO has gone free to play now - how are people enjoying it now?

DDO I played many moons ago - seemed more of a dungeon crawler than anything and wasn't all that interesting for me. Is this still the case?

Runes of Magic looks interesting but Im probably right in assuming its a quest hub game like most themeparks? Maybe a freeish version of WoW perhaps?

EQ2 I tried to download this when it was first moved to F2P but the game didn't grab me at all. In fairness, I really didn't give it a solid chance so Im listing it here to get comments.

(edit) Forgot about Forsaken World which is a new F2P MMO - I may give that a try as well :)

I probably miss some - I don't know... I haven't been keeping up on games lately as everything I seem to buy lasts MAYBE throughout the free month. Been playing lots of single player games (Dragon Age, etc) lately but I'd really enjoy playing with some friends. Since we don't want to spend much cash (if any) between now and the new releases, thought this would be a good starting point.

Slightly on topic - but I thought there was a sticky post with all the F2P games available but I didn't see it... am I blind/just missed it somehow or does this thread not exist? :) If that's the case, a helpful link would be great!

Cheers!

ok...ill share the experience ive had with everything so far:

WoW private server: All instant 80s are failure, theres like only one blizzclone and thats walking behind on alot of bugs, though it is fun...i wouldnt recommend it if u would ever wanna play something else though

DDO: tried it....whole game rotates around the cashshop, graphics are...njah njah..., movement and story is....avarage

Runes of Magic: depends on you...ive heard enough people who love runes of magic....graphics are avarage, but i stopped playing it after short while because theres one thing i cant stand....u can make up monsters that look great, u can make up new dragons and wolfs...but at runes of magic i was like ....OOWW damn! whats that pink fluffy thing jumping around spraying stars! ...like that

LotRo: slower paced then other MMO's, the goal here is to reach end-game as slow as you possibly can...graphics are nice (not like ultimate stunning compared to newest mmo's, but sure refreshing to take a look around middle-earth and if u love lotr, u love lotro). The story is nice, you have bookquests you can follow and alot of sidequests to. i adore the musicsystem...i love playing songs on my lute for people or yust hanging around near people to yust relax and do stupid, instead of LEVELING! theres only one thing you have to master while playing F2P...while private servers and runes of magic are totally free to play, and DDO is almost impossible to play for free, lotro is learning how to spent your points you can get for free like that way that you can get the most out of the game. At least...i like ths game :P, but not everyone does :(

Fiesta online: to sketchy, dont try

Aion private server and aika: they CAN be great but most of the time the hard grinding and lack of PvP will get you down.

Perfect world: feels like WoW clone, nice graphics..dont like the animal things and amazingly weird flying mounts which let me down.

ive been looking for an mmorpg for long time to and noticed...there aint one :D

nowadays i usually play an combo of WoW private server (bloodcraft) and LotRo where i got an char named loreraider on snowbourn EU side..

If i could...i would STRONGLY recommend Guild wars 2....sadly enough..it aint out yet :P

For the F2P games i believe at homepage here you can find an F2P game list somewhere at the right side of this site and a bit down

Sorry i cant tell you more

    Maybe check here: http://www.mmorpg-center.com/top-10-free-mmorpg-games

You are awesome mate -  such a great answer /cheers!

Just one last question, Im likely gonna install LOTRO as I bought the original once upon a time so I figure that gives me some benefit :) Also, do I really NEED the cashstop to progress or can I just go on at my pace and not worry about it? Truth be told, I don't expect it to be a long term thing, I just want something for 3-6 months where I can have some fun and I think LOTRO fits me really well based on your descriptions. Only thing though - I hate cash stops.... most times (all times?) I'd rather pay the sub fee. But as long as you're not hindered too badly, then I'm perfectly ok with it.

Appreciate your tips - thanks a bunch! :)

Should be fine on free content til at least mid 20s, level wise, and should have enough TP by then from just playing the game to buy Lone Lands, which will get you set into the 30s.  You'll be fine, for a short term investment.  Be sure to use your old log ins though, so you can be marked as a premium member, have a little more stuff available.

u can get to 65 without cashshop but it aint easy, if u got original bought game u might even get subscribtion free for some time (not sure)...but if u ever REALLY need points to buy expansions and such with.....u can make 20 characters and all get like 200 TP on them and ull have enough for an expansion and 2 leveling areas XD since all TP from every char goes to 1 account, u can even delete all those chars afterwards..know enough guys who easily and with fun made it to 65 without paying a dice

I sense there's a LOT of us out there with the same feeling at the moment. Been looking for something decent to tide me over for months. LOTRO is the only F2P title I've played that's both fair, non-sneaky with the cash shop and worth the hours of play. Tried pretty much everything else out at the moment and there's a LOT of rubbish, second rate copies of better games I really wonder why they bother going to the effort developing them and, moreover: who's playing them!? I got bored of LOTRO after a year or so too as, whilst it is very good and the storyline quests carry you through the game very nicely and with interest, it's still the same 'similar set of action buttons/kill 10 of them and talk to your uncle Philbert' sort of games that I've played to death in recent years. One other thing I will say about LOTRO is that the end game isn't all that great but by the time you get to that stage something better will be out ;-) Enjoy!

I'm in the exact same situation as all the others in this thread, I am waiting for SWTOR and maybe GW2 to come out before buying/paying monthly for a game. I've tried just about all the F2P MMOs I could find and they pretty much all totally blow. I've played MMOs since they began with UO, EQ, on and on, etc. I played LOTOR years ago but haven't played it recently so I can't give advice on that game, I do remember the music was cool but there wasn't an endgame and it sounds like maybe that is still the case.

I guess the main reason for my post is to share the game that is currently holding me over until the big guns come out. Allods Online. I never see it commented on in these F2P threads, I don't know if people just haven't tried it or haven't heard of it or what. As far as MMOs go it's by far the most polished F2P game I've tried other than maybe LOTOR since that wasn't bad when I played it years ago when it was P2P. Allods Online is definitely a WOW clone down to almost the last detail but it has a cash shop versus subscription. You can definitely do everything without using the cash shop, it's just a little more painfully free as I like to call it. They like to sell all the really useful stuff that you take for granted in other games, mounts, bigger bags, etc. People sell this stuff on the AH though so if you lvl up and make money you can buy this stuff later in game.

Allods has by far kept my interest the longest out of all the F2P games I've tried, other games like Forsaken World and other wierd Korean type MMO free games just make me want to shoot myself after 30 minutes or so, I don't see how people play these games.

Basically I'm saying that people really need to put Allods Online into the list of possible F2P games to tide you over to something major comes out.

I would also recommend LOTRO which seems to be the best F2P MMO out there atm. As previously mentioned in this thread, it is possible to reach level cap without spending any cash by accruing your Turbine Points which can be obtained ingame by completing quests and traits. Also you can do some skirmishes which give a lot of xp early on at the lower levels.

Another F2P MMO is Champions Online which is a superhero MMO incase you find LOTRO wasn't your cup of preverbial tea but it is not as good and much more limited so you will no doubt end up using the store and spending some cash.

    Good luck anyway:)

LOTRO and EQ2 in my opnion are solid choices for F2p games , but on a personal level i lean more towards EQ2.

There is just so much more to EQ2 in my opinion. The crafting system in EQ2 is top notch..one of the best in my opinion.

Beautiful well done landscapes. In depth Class system ..24 classes with 3 advancement trees. A Large helpful community. I admit EQ2 is hard to get into at first but it is truly an amazing game..with so much to offer. even pvp once you hit 30!

LOTRO also has a very nice crafting system. Also tons of content to explore. The cash shop is probably a bit better thhan EQ2 , but not by that much to be honest. Personaly i find the combat in LOTRO dull. Plus the pvp is not really the best. LOTRO is def. one of the better F2p games out there no doubt. I just think EQ2 has more to offer.

As for ROM ..stay away from that POS!

I once had an aacount awhile back with mmorpg.com , and i got banned Instantly for even bringing up private servers.

There few good ones for WoW and Aion i know with huge communities and almost 100% game like. If your intrested in those..just pm me and i will give the names to you. I refuse to post the names of the private servers because i dont want to take the chance of getting banned again.
