Originally posted by Laserwolf I am more into realism like BF1942, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor. Basically a FPS with real guns and bullets, not plasma blasts. Someone said all combat is non-vehicular and enclosed. Another FPS style I hate is inside buildings with short narrow halls and tunnels. Am I wrong about my assumptions?
Try World War II Online if your not looking for futuristic. And there is nothing enclosed about the fields of northern France
Hectic is not how I would describe the endless 3 way battles so common in Planetside. Most players would agree the 300 person battles are lagfests with no strategy involved. Simply zerg and be zerged while trying not to lag out and get booted back to sanctuary where you're unable to rejoin the battle.
300 person battles aren't lagfest - if they were then why do so many people even bother with them? Why is the queue always so high?
I'm also on a high end PC with broadband. Don't believe me, read one of the many posts on the official forums regarding performance issues. Planetside actually runs slower on higher end PCs.
I have a high end PC and I get 90+ fps in massive zergs. Sorry you don't know how to tweak your system to optimal performance, but it can be done and is done by most players. There is a link on the PS Tech Forums that goes through step-by-step on how to improve performance across the board for many different types of gaming rigs. I recommend using it.
Do you know what ReconDelta's problem is with PS? His problem is that he isn't getting his way. So like a little boy he throws tantrums. He did it relentlessly on the PS boards. Now all he does is go to various websites and bad mouth a great game. Instead of trying to help PS evolve into something better, he just runs around saying the game is a POS. The new producer of PS is working with us players to make the game better. They tweaked and re-tweaked BFR's, they re-did many game play aspects and more are on the way. You know, I don't mind people giving creative criticism to a game - but he(ReconDelta) doesn't do that.
And BF2 will not kill PS, just like none of the other FPS's killed PS. PS offers some things those games do not offer. I persistent game world. Massive battles on a scale yet unmatched by any other game and a great community.

All these game have their share of immature posters, none are immune. Trust me, look no further than ReconDelta as proof that these boards are infested with the same kind of immature minds. The official boards over at PS aren't all that bad, not when you compare them to games like EQ, and WoW. Now there is some seriously bad boards.
Official forums are whine fests no matter what the game. They are a place that about 1-3% of the total population (usually the immature and angry players) to go and feel like they're being heard. There are of course exceptions.
With my limited experience with PS, it was a fun game...but got a little boring after two weeks. Most of the people I played with were mature. If they were immature they were usually kicked out of the squad I was in.
If you're looking for fast paced action (once you get to the battle) with big machines at your disposal, then give PS a try...you may just like it.
I'm pretty sure no CC is required, the account just tells you that you need to activate to continue use (can't really keep levelling every week, although I suppose if you were fast you could)
I kept interchanging Planetside from the Planetwide the publishing co. Anyways the game is quite ok.I kinda got the hang of it. I dont think it is a stupid game.
If any of you decide to play, on Emerald you can look for me under ImperialRockx (NC character) and Farlor (VS) character. I'd be more than happy to assist you.
Planetside is over two years old. The game initially started with 6 very populated servers and quickly dropped to 3 servers with rather low populations. SOE has stopped nearly all development on the game. The lead developer has changed multiple times. The graphic team lead has quit and to my knowledge not been replaced. I believe the Planetside team consists of two people a game producer/developer/propaganda minister and a forum jockey who was recently hired. SOE does not appear to put any money into advertising or additional production of Planetside. Yet continues to charge $12.95 for subscriptions.
I started PS on release and held one or two active accounts until three months ago. The game has been a roller coaster of senseless nerfs, buffs, bugs, and broken promises. Finally you realize even though the game had potential it becomes time for a divorce.
Simply trying to warn others to avoid this two year old pathetic excuse for an MMO. Nothing is lost trying out the 7 day trial except some bandwidth and time. But I certainly would not recommend paying for an account and buying the software. You would have more fun playing Windows Minesweep.

So PS is two years old Recon. EQ, UO, AC are all much older games and people still play them. Many games start with more servers then is actually needed - again nothing new you are saying. SOE has not stopped development of the game. In fact patch 3.7 is on the way. In it we have new exp capabilites for support players and a new aircraft, the Vulture, is being added. This is just a drop in the bucket of what is coming. The lead developer has changed once. PS teams has over 15 people. Of course they are going to charge money. If they didn't all support for the game would cease.
Senseless nerfs. Name one. As for bugs, name me one game on the internet that isn't buggy - just one. Buffs, yea...and that is a bad thing? What broken promises? Please enlighten us all with what promises were broken. I bet you don't even respond to my counters here - if you do it is to say STFU, because you know I'm right.
No Recon, you are not trying to warn others, you are being a jerk. PS is one of the best games on the internet. Just because PS developers don't cater to your evey whim and make the game just for you - you slam it. You slam it every chance you get on forums all over the internet. I can think of games that are much worse to play than PS - much worse.
Recon is a guy that just can't let it go. He'll do whatever it takes to try to dissuade others from giving PS a fair shot. It is a great game. Here is a list of pros and cons.
Cons: Need a fairly decent gaming rig to run it - with optimizations you can run it fairly well on a 1.5ghz, 1gig ram, with a 128meg video card. Anything less than this and you'll see some performance issues in some of the more massive battles - we're talking 200+ people taking part in it. Otherwise you should see good fps even in 390+ battles.
Pros No grinding of exp to get to the good part of the game. Casual gamer friendly - you don't have to give up real life in order to play this game. No need for special equipment or gear on your avatar to be effective. Game is a cross between an MMORPG, FPS, and RTS.It is all out PvP all the time. Outstanding team and solo play. Game has great graphics if your gaming rig is powerful enough.Game has incredible sound. Game is replayable - lots of different roles for players to partake of and you can multi-class in a sense(like bea sniper/combat engineeer/ medic. Three empires to choose from all with distinct advantages and disadvantages - one of the most balanced online shooter games you'll ever play. No other game can field so many other players on masse to do battle against one another like PS.
Game is just awesome. I honestly mean that. I wouldn't be so passionate about it now, and even moreso, than when I first started playing it two years ago. Game is great and getting better. I gave up playing UO(6 months), EQ(3 months), AC/Darktide(2.5 years), DAoC(6 months), AC2(4 months), SB(beta'd), Lineage II(beta'd), SWG(1.3 years) EQ2(3 motnhs), CoH(2 months - might go back once CoV goes live - if I can pull myself away from PS), WoW(beta'd, 2 months live - cancelled), AO(1 month), Guild Wars (beta'd and bought - do not play it - can't pull myself away from PS) Eve(1 month)...all these games and more, and yet I play nothing but Planetside now. None of those other games can hold a candle IMHO to PS - none.
Originally posted by ReconDelta Planetside is a boring and unimaginative game with some of the worst playerbase I have ever experienced in an online game. The maturity level, whining, lack of skill with the Planetside playerbase is reason enough to avoid this game. SOE puts almost no support into Planetside and the game is barely worth playing if it were free. A far better gaming experience can be obtained in a free FPS such as BF1942, America's Army, etc. Avoid Planetside.
Thanks for letting everyone know about this! I have always wanted to check out Planetside. But I never wanted to spend "real money" on it. Meaning, CS is close enough and free. The monthly fee for PS is roughly the same as for all other "real" MMORPGs, which have far more things. I do agree PS is a very unique MMOFPS. I casually went for an earlier free trial, but the DL was too big, took too long, and I did not really have enough free time anyway.
I will try out this new PS free trial sometime over the next 2-3 weeks. Thanks again for the heads up!
I enjoyed it during beta, I will certainly give it a seven day look see once again, thanks for the info!

I mentioned in a previous post my biggest problem when I tried PS, admitedly some time ago, was my experience from the community, I would describe the general attitude I ran into as childish, elitist, unaccepting, immature and unfriendly.
Reading the correspondence between to the two of you, I cannot help but think I certainly received an accurate gauge for the overall community.
Teala: It's obvious your quite passionate about PS, which is great but "to much of a good thing" as they say. Being unflintching and downright nasty towards others who dissagree with you certainly does not put the best foot forward of the community you are trying to attract people towards.
I'm not attacking anyone here, just letting you know what someone from my position reading this would think.

The Planetside community as a whole chooses to attack anyone who dissents from their praises of their very flawed game. Lacking the ability to discuss the countless issues with Planetside this same community resorts to personal attacks. Hence my reason for stating they are the most immature and worst MMO audience I have ever experienced.
Right now only the radical extreme are still playing Planetside. So watch out if you choose to associate with the bunch.
Most with a brain and any taste in quality gaming left months ago and soon we will bask in the goodness of BF2.
I don't think I have been to nasty toward Recon, in fact I'm staying quite civil. I debate him openly with things about the game and counter his points with what is known and he doesn't refute them. He just keeps saying that Planetside is a bad MMO, the developers are bad, the game community is bad...and that is just not true.
If he or anyone else is going to go around and do nothing but slam a game that he had a bad experience with - constantly for the soul purpose of hurting the game - then I as a fan of the game will do my best to balance it. As long as Recon is going to keep slamming the game of Planetside I'll keep on refuting him with what I know about the game.
Oh and he is being a jerk. There is no better way to say it, because only a jerk would do what he is doing. Kinda reminds me of the boy that sat behind me in 3 grade and kept pulling my ponytail. He was being a jerk - just as Recon is being one now. He is entitled to be a jerk all he wants. I am also entitled to voice my opinions to refute his statements or as in the case of the little jerk that sat behind me stand up and smack him upside the head.
Recon, PS has its problems, the biggest being performance issues for computers that are on the slow side. This is a well known fact. As for balance issues, there are a few, very few. Nobody denies that, and PS developers are always tweaking to balance things better. I again challenge you to name me one MMO that doesn't have these issues. You say our gaming community is ignorant and arrogant toward the game and toward those that say anything negative about the game. Wrong and wrong. We know about our game, we know its flaws, weaknesses and its strengths. You can say what you want about PS, but at least do it in a manner that doesn't come across as someone that is trashing and bashing the game - and you do with your post. Want to say the PS has performance issues, fine, you're not saying anything that isn't all ready known, but then again you should mention that PS forums offer a slew of information on how to tweak your gaming rig. Some say it works, others dispute this. I say it works because I have seen first hand what a little tweaking can do using the info on the PS tech forums.
The people that play PS are very, how should I say this - gung ho - about the game Planetside. Take for example the people in the outfit I play with. 70% are either military or ex-military. Some are even away right now as I type this and in harms way over in Iraq and Afghanistan. These guys are passionate about there gaming, in general(gamers tend to be that way), and about PS. They are some of the most helpful and friendly people you'll ever meet. I know there are hundreds of others that play the game that like the game as much as our outfit does. So we're a tight knit gaming community over there and Recon you know that. How is that a bad thing? When planetside movies website was about to go under the gaming community stepped up and made sure the website wouldn't flounder. When we saw our population numbers start to drop we didn't wait for SOE to start advertising, we took it upon ourselves to do it. This makes us a bad gaming community?
In the mean time. If you are a gamer and want to try a very fun MMO that is a little bit of an RPG, but plays like an FPS with a bit of RTS thrown in for good meassure. Don't take mine or anyone elses word for how the game is. Experience it yourself in the 7 day free trial offer. Then come to your own conclusions about the game.
Recon and teala may be play the extreme sides of the planetside coin, but please dont let either disuede you from trying out a great game.
I see the Recon has decided to pick up the Tokyo Rose role for BF2. but... I also agree with Recon that Battlefield 2 will be an Incredible game. But it is defiantely not going to be the end of planetside. Planetside has survived many games that were to be the end of it, and it will endure on. Planetside has the persistant world and futuristic style, among other things that people will always want. Sont has made a statement about a new MMOFPS coming out in 2006, we can only specualte whether it'll be PSide 2 or not, but if it is, then I can only surmise that that shall be the end of PSide 1.
A time will come when it reaches its end, but until then its still a very good game.
And of the comment about only the most radical extreme being the only ones still playing, that is quite far off the mark. I am constantly finding new people who have just started playing who want help and I always try and get them aquainted and organized with the PSide world.
As for the immaturity of the community, yes, there are some people who feel the need to try and ruin the fun of pther peoples experience. but it is far far far less than CS and UT2004 communities. If someone is spamming the chat window it is ussually one of the afformentioned "fun killers" that is just being annoying, and it is as easy as typing "/ignore funkiller" to be rid of the problem.
Emerald server on peak times has about 800-900 people playing on the server with 2 continents being poplocked, or close to poplocked, and many others in the caves or mucking around doing there own thing somewhere else. During other times the number is about half that but a good battle is almost always able to be found.
In short. Its a unique game with all the same pluses and faults as alomost any other game out there.
To the people that are looking and interested in trying it, Do It! you have nothing to lose but time, and theres ussually plenty of that.
If you dont like it. come back and give us an honest straight-forward post. no need for rhetoric and snide remarks. The truth shall set you free.
If you decide to choose the Emerald server on the Vanu side of things, send a tell to Darkol and I'll help you get situated without any Outfit recruitment propaganda other than to tell you to try a few out before deciding.
And above all else try to go in with an open mind, and have fun.

i don't play Planet Side cause it's P2P, and P2P is Evil.
