Trader or simular class in HJ?

rivenerrivener Member Posts: 2

I played DragonRealms for years as a trader.  I enjoyed traveling from town to town with other traders to get my skill up and earn money.  Is there going to any type of non combat related classes in HJ similar to traders or empaths.

If so will there be player thieves to deal with like there was in DragonRealms.  I may have really hated the thieves taking my money but I enjoyed trying to find ways to deal with them.  I don't remember the name but there was one thief that was so good I used to have to pay her not to steal from me.  I believe the fee was 10 platinum doks for 2 months of leaving me alone.

Don't quote me on this, but I *think* I remember seeing a post on our boards that indicated there would be an Empath-type class.  As for traders, I haven't heard anything, but I do hope so -- I always had a lot of fun with my trader in DR...  even with all of the thieves about. image

I don't see any reason not to put the trader class into HJ; I'm sure you could easily find a way to make it be a heroic class. You could have to bring supplies to a town that's under attack so they can fight back. Or you could be trading and have to fend off a horde of monsters that just ambushed your caravan. Given the fact that HJ will have a system where you have two classes from the beginning, this it wouldn't be hard to picture a simple trader fighting back--because he may also be a powerful mage. ::::02::

What I'd like to see is more info on classes/professions. I haven't heard a lot of discussion about classes even in the council. Could any GM or other staff member help me out here? Not sure that Okritas even has the information yet. Classes must still need work?

There's a movie of the E3 demo out there where I bet you could read them off the screen.

We have a lot of design time invested in our professions, how they work, and the abilities associated with each -- none-the-less, we expect it to change.  We don't think anything is a done deal until they've been thoroughly play tested.

We do not currently have a trader class planned.  Nor any purely non-combat professions.

A character's profession is chosen by selecting two classes.  The combination of those two provides the two ability lists the player will work with as well as their starting profession title.  The 12 classes are broken up into three schools of knowledge: Fighter, Mage and Mystic.

Have I mentioned yet that what I post here may change based on feedback and testing?  ;)

    Fighter

    Warrior
    Archer
    Monk
    Rogue

    Mage

    Wizard
    Necromancer
    Bard
    Gearmage

    Mystic

    Healer
    Cleric
    Druid
    Alchemist

There's a lot more to it, of course, but I need to leave a little bit to talk about between now and beta. :P

    Wow...

Ok... so if each combination of a pair of classes is a separate profession title, then I count 66 different possible profession titles? ::::22::::::22::::::22::

If so, that would be fantastic; no one likes being just another warrior out of a hundred. Having 66 different possiblities of "what you are", would really help players to feel unique in HJ.

Something to keep an eye out on though... in FFXI, some job-subjob combos were clearly better than others... to the point that some were pointless in comparison. So despite allowing the player the freedom to choose any combination of jobs, the game was led to promote certain combinations. This effectively limited the number of reasonable choices, resulting in not much variety at all. The difficulty with so many choices, is to balance them so that each has its place... so its something i wish you luck in... not to mention coming up with 66 different profession titles.

In reply to the above poster about FFXI

Hopefully something like that doesn't happen, but from what I know... even if whatever you built wasn't as effective or up to "par". It still wouldn't matter because you don't have to be equal in levels to participate in a group. Likewise it shouldn't matter if so-and-so isn't as effective as so-and-so just as long as the person is smart enough to know what he or she is doing.

I remember somewhere they pointed out they want the battles to be more tactical and more thinking. FFXI was not tactical as in you have a set of patterns on how to fight. They really want you to be able to choose who you really want to be and make sure that you have a really great time in doing so.

Plus didn't they spend like months just thoroughly think out the Class Ideas? I have some very high hopes for the dev team. I'll trust this company since I've heard such outstanding reviews from previous players of their games.

    Yay Necromancer!

So...IS their crafting at all or is this a strictly combat game? As long as its not the kind of crafting where you HAVE to fight mobs to get the necessary components, I'll be happy. If it is...well...it might kill my interest...I want to be able to gather supplies without fighting...cause sometimes, I just wanna craft.

Awesome approach!  No more ''few pre-selected hybrid'', but a full choice to the players, within a class system!

*make a happy dance of joy*

PS: Random question:  Can someone select the same class twice?  If so are all class available twice or only a few?  Or nope, you have to pick 2?  (Mostly figure this question when I read the 4 melee class, if someone want to be the best tank, he still is either an archer, a rogue or a monk as well as been a tank?  Or is it possible for someone to pick tanking twice?  Or maybe adding another defensive tank?  Or 1 of the 3 is defensive(never think so about a rogue, monk or archer to be defensive)?)  I see pro and cons to both approach and I am kinda confuse on this, so I dont have an opinion, just a question(rare with me hehe).

so its something i wish you luck in... not to mention coming up with 66 different profession titles.

Here's something you can look into to determine whether or not they'll have enough inenguity to come up with 66 titles:

Thanks again for the answer!  image

And for the folks about 66 titles...if a game like Warlord IV have like 30 titles, I am sure it would be easy to have a few hundred titles if the only limit is your imagination...just look at TSR, all the prestigious class...You know Paladins start as a prestigious class for warrior!

That website that someone gave listing DragonRealms' titles is soon going to be out of date... they're currently rewriting the title system to make it skill-based so anyone with X amount of ranks in Light Edged Weapons, or Lockpicking, or combinations of particular skills (or things like land ownership, money, number of deaths, etc) could have certain titles available to them.

With all of the variations, DR will provide more than 2000 titles for players to wear. No problems with thinking of titles for Simutronics. :)

First I must say.. Woohoo! Alchemist as a useable combat class! I've been waiting so long to see that in an MMO!

And having a non combat related class can be nice, but to date, in my opinion, no one has done it very well. A crafting system that is fun to participate in and helps the economy rather than hindering it has not happened yet. In the games I've played too many crafters get greedy, and in order for any pure adventurer to get anything we have to struggle selling off little drops from mobs and spend weeks earning enough coin to buy things from the crafters, while crafters make a nice little profit in one night. Here I'm using the Everquest 2 format as my reference. Awful, awful, awful is all I can say about it.

Sub-classes is good to see though. I adore skill trees, Shadowbane was the only MMO I've really played where different classes could truely be unique because of their skill point system. From the way it sounds HJ is offering uniqueness as well. And that combination that one person thinks is less effective than what most of the game population uses hopefully just takes more thinking to bring out the true potential of it. I spent my time in Shadowbane using the builds and combos no one else used, and proving that they weren't as useless as others had thought.

I'll definately be watching if they can pull that off as well.

Just in case anyone cares, I'd soooo love to see a purely non-combative option, such as healer or trader. imageimage
