TOR and Secret world are the ones I am hoping for this year. But neither is even in beta yet so not hold my breath for the year. At least Rift beats Cata and DCUO. Least in my book. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
To address the "chosen one" mindset. I must have killed the first balrog in the rift 100 times. We killed all the famous villains and epic mobs in COH plenty of times. I think every mission in EVE was to kill the same fuckin pirates.Gandalf told me I was the only one allowed to hang out with frodo before he left for Mordor. You're always going to do shit over and over in MMOs.
It was wrong on the balrog. Just as wrong as it is in SWTOR.
(btw: In CoH you didn't kill the villain, you defeated them. And if you've ever read comic books you'll know that many different heroes often defeat the same heroes over and over again. Also, CoH had dynamic mission generators, so you killing the villain would have always been different in some way than someone else. That's not the "ideal solution", more the result of the world of comics just being a little better suited to having to fight the same enemy over and over again, that's all.)
In EVE, i'm pretty sure they are randomly generated pirates every time. Not 100%, it's been a while since I played it.
Saying "you're always going to do shit over in MMOs" is accepting that no improvement can be made. It's the reason WoW has 10 million subs. That's 10 million people that basically gave up and settled for the fact that "well, nothing new can be done, let's just do the same thing as always".
A different approach IS possible. Dynamic content alone allows for it. The technology is there. It can be done. It can be done in a themepark and it can be done in a sandbox fashion.
Just like it's possible to write a story about a hero, it's possible to write a story about an army. That's all that's required. "The Chosen One" is NOT the only way to write a story. Instead of focusing on Luke's battle with the Emperor (hero focus), a story can focus on the massive battle that raged in space at the same time that had countless participants.
War is MASSIVE. Star Wars has tons of war. Instead of saying 'let's make 8 paths through the world because marketing tells us that 8 is a satisfactory number to create "replayability"', they should have said "ok, we're going to have 5000 unique people participating in our storyline, what does the storyline need to be to allow for 5000 people?"
That would have been the right approach. Anyhow, i think i've discussed this to death now. Plus the game is already made and it is what it is. Which is nothing new. I'll see you online in 2012 and we'll test out how well my character's swtor story meshes with yours.

While you'll always have a disconnect between game world and quests, there are degrees to it. When you're supposed to be the Chosen One and kill the Big Evil that scourges the world whether that's Arthas or some named dragon, that disconnect can be larger.
However, I doubt that you'll be the 'Chosen One' in SWTOR: you'll be one in a host of Sith or Jedi or Troopers etc. Sure, you'll still be considered a hero or an emerging one, but not the hero and most important person of the world in SWTOR. Just one hero or rising star in a whole band of heroes or field of stars, and that's integrated into the stories as well.

I'm only going to argue the one part I highlighted in RED above. I've player CoH since about 6 months after it went live and I have to say that it NEVER had "dynamic mission generators" unless you are counting the paper/radio missions and even they are nothing more than about 50 missions per level segement (normally per 5 levels in other words). If you pay attention, the mission intros are even the EXACT same wording every time you get that particular mission. The only dynamic part of it was that it choose them at random every time you called in for a mission with the radio or newspaper. Even the new alignment missions are the same so the new stuff isn't anything new. It's still a fun game, just no dynamics to it.

Now I'm a huge CoH fan. I've been there from the beginning and have all the vet rewards and love the game, but you still seem to forget that the DEFEAT missions are not the only ones. What about Dr. Person A who you have to capture who is a part of a static storyline? Is he really being captured by all 600 villains doing that line?
Are all 1000 heroes rescuing that one poor woman from the CoT? Is that mystic really getting rekidnapped and brought to that cave every time?
Is Statesman really hanging out with EVERY HERO who gets that one farm map?
Or what about Task Forces? Set in stone storyline with no deviation that hundreds of people do.
Don't pretend there are MMOs that lack inconsistency. How long have you even been playing CoH?
