Lord of the Rings Online: Update 3 Developer Walkthrough

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Turbine and the Lord of the Rings development team have been working quite hard during the first half of 2011 to bring to large updates into the game. MMORPG.com Lead Writer Bill Murphy recently had the opportunity to participate in a developer walkthrough of Update 3 with Turbine developers Linda Currie and Aaron Campbell. See what Bill discovered during his guided tour.

The topic of conversation (and playing via the test server Bullroarer) was none other than Update 3, which launches today for the NA crowd. Before we got started Aaron wanted to make sure we also mention the upcoming takeover by Turbine of the European servers for LotRO. He stated that this is scheduled to go down on June 1st and that when the servers come back up under Turbine’s control that’s when the EU folks will get Update 3 too. After that brief PSA though we moved onto the goods: content Update 3 for the free version of LotRO.

Looks pretty interesting. If my Rift fever wears off I'll have to give LOTRO another shot.

LOTRO programmer and developers seem to be doing a good job improving and maintaing their game. I like LOTRO, though I play only occasionally these days. But when I do , they seem to be making good progress with all additions. I give hands down once again to them for making good development.

Uh. Codemasters has nothing to do with this; they're actually backing out of LOTRO entirely. This is Turbine and Turbine alone.

I really wish they would overhaul the UI and character models.  Everything else about the game is fun, but I cringe when I look at my UI and my avatar.  Just isn't inspiring any immediate gameplay from me.

i agree, why all the UGLY avatarsand their cripple running movement. It looks so weird and unnatural, even f2p games have better running animations. Other than that, if I can ever get over it, which i can't atm, it's good.

Oh no erictlewis does not like it!!

    What a shock...

Seems like some new fun content :)

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

I do agree with him. It's not impossible to tweak models and make new animations, they're just being lazy. Until they at least fix the combat animations, I won't touch this game again.

The combat animations have been improved significantly are fine.  Your dated argument is definitely showing.  Otherwise, the modeling in general for characters/equipment needs work.

Awesome update, looking forward to trying out the new instances and skirmishes. Lotro is still on of my most favorite MMOs along with Guild Wars. I gave up on WoW, tried it again this month and I am already bored. I guess I enjoy the Lord of the Rings story more than Warcraft.

As to the animations, they do not bother me. Character models look fine but that is more of a personal opinion. This game looks great at DX11 with maxed out visuals.

Games playing: Lotro,Fallen Earth,Star Trek Online.
    Games playing casually: CoX,Guild Wars,FFXIV,Champions Online,DDO.

Funny little thing that came up in the Forum and a Blue Name (Dev) verified it:

The existing relics won't come out of the "legendary" items with the update, so with 3 new top notch relics in the game everyone who wants to slot them and not lose his previous relics will have to buy a removal scroll from the shop.

I guess not many people bought them so now I expect new and more powerful relics each update to ensure that end game players buy them.

On a brighter side: The game is fantastic until you reach the level cap and ran out of new things that do not involve grinding to do. Everyone should try it now that it's free. I sure hope other games go this way, I'd love to get back to AoC for more than a few days during their come back celebrations :(

LOTRO is not P2W.  The trolls must be feeding you lies.....

    /sarcasm off

Any lifetimer happy now that you need to pay money to acheive the same benefits as before?

Two skirms and two 3 mans don't make up for that for me.

This update along with the whole game has gone rather bleh.

No surprise there. I knew that they would force people to buy stuff from the store. It's still disappointing though.

"Update three comes packed with a whole new series of quests to progress the story, but players will most likely be more interested in the two brand new skirmishes and three-person dungeons"

This is why I hardly play LOTRO anymore. The developers themselves have given up on what they themselved claimed to be their game's defining characteristic - the Epic Story. More and more they have been focusing on features which appeal to a particular section of the playerbase only, while alienating others. More instances, skirmishes and raids.

Where is the "Lord of the Rings" in LOTRO anymore?

I agree,  Lord of the rings has become lord of the instance join panel.  Its one of the main reasons why I gave up on the game. I guess a lot of folks love those skirmishes,  all it reminds me of is storm hold.  Lotro = d&d now.  Want to do something just zone.

This is my sentiment exactly and why I canceled my subscription after bein a loyal fan since the very first beta phase.

What set this game apart for me was the epic story line.  I loved feeling like I was helping the fellowship along with their journey.  Now it just feels like your in the same world as the fellowship, but no longer being a helping hand in their journey.  A new skirmish taking us back to Dol Dinen and Forochel??????????  Are you kidding me???????????  I'm so been there done that.

A lot of people have mentioned the character animations, and nobody is mentioning anything positive about them.  The Devs hear the complaints loud and clear but instead of changing the animations, they prefer to try and hide the animations with all the crap from the wardrobe.  It's really pathetic.  Once they actually add real content and not any of that skirmish/raid b.s., I will come back when the Isengard expansion is about to be released.  Hopefully a lot of people will come back with Isengard and Turbine will realize it's all about the main story line.
