I don't get what all the hype is over this game. What nudity, cursing, ingame sex? Yawn I can get that on a Showtime channel. I played this game for 1 day and than unstalled it, i didn't find it interesting nor fun. I am glad I didn't go out and waste 50$ bucks on this.

That's because Arcania is to simple, and fighting is just like any Mmorpg, click, click click

They have very similar combat system, when the combos are trigered by a good timing. But in Gothic 4 it just worked much better, and movement of the toon was also a lot better to me at least. In the witcher it was as if your toon need half a second to react, was very anoying especially because you needed to have a good clicking timing but your toon was just way of your timing, was plain bad.

Also maybe the combat is better in the witcher 2? How is it compare to The witcher?

The Witcher 2's combat is tolerable at least. In the Witcher it was downright horrible.

Call me petty but I won't believe that untill they allow character customization. What I mean is gender. The game looks great, and I may go out and buy the first one later in the year just to see what I've been missing but on a personal note I've always hated RPGs that don't let you have some say in who you are in the game. I don't mind presets but give your players an option. On the flip side the game looks great as doe the screenshots. So don't think I'm bashing the game, I'll probably give it a shot, but when the price goes down a bit.

I can understand why many like this game and i can't argue about taste.

But for me when i have limited freedom, a world with alot invisble barriers and glued to ground(no jump) camara specially in small areas is terible, plus fact that game specially in many cases forces you to fights they take away my freedom and i have feeling i need a gamepad instead of keyboard+mouse im out and give this game a 6/10 becouse its not a realy a pc game.

The Witcher is based on a novel series, and the main character in that tale is a MAN (in gender at least) named Geralt of Rivia. It's not a random fiction adventure like Mass Effect, where you can play either gender.

Personally I loved Witcher 1 and played it through several times, I've not yet finished Witcher 2, but I'm not disappointed to say the least.

It's your opinion, but i disagree.

Beats Bioware RPG's in what?! story? no. Combat? no, it's clunky and frustranting. Polish? no, the game is full of bugs and lacks optimization which is terribly annoying. Another over-hyped game... it's a good game, but isn't the best game ever. ME 1 & 2 and even DA: Origins are better and more fun than this. Hell i loved the original witcher, but i was really disappointed with this game. My personal review is 8/10.

Man you are so right. Those recycled maps, spawning out of thin air enemies and exploding mobs are awesome.

Not to mention how the entire game is built around Blood Mages but you just happen to speciailize in one and are rolling around town with no worry. The stupid dialogue wheel with options like "I want to be a Dragon" responses and othere idiotic thing is very very immersive.

DA2 is a steaming pile of poo. Look at user reviews, the majority wins and you are a fanboy.

Funny, because for me it's exactly the other way round: I find the combat in Witcher 2 horrible (I've stopped playing the game by now) and found combat in Witcher 1 just about tolerable. Just shows that different people have different preferences I guess.

Based on what I have been reading, the majority of people seem to love this game, so I have been waiting to see what Gamespot would give it.  They gave it a 9.0, which is shockingly high, considering Portal 2 was given a 9.0 and was touted as a masterpiece by G4.com.  Love it or hate it, you have to give CDP props for coming out of left field with a game this unexpectedly good.  I had never even heard of them before this, but I suspect they will remain on people's radar from now on, simply for the quality of RPG they have created.

    Currently playing:
    Rift
    Played:
SWToR, Aion,EQ, Dark Age of Camelot
    World of Warcraft, AoC

Well, they were already well known for Witcher 1. Witcher 2 is not unexpectedly good, unless you've never even heard of the 1st game. Actually I came to expect Witcher 2 to deliver like it did for me at least, I wouldn't have accepted anything less from CD Projekt.

I can't imagine a proper RPG player who had not at least heard of Witcher earlier.

I'm not the kind of guy that will change his opinion listening to others.

I played both games and compared them with my knowledge, which is good enough i assure you.

I also played a lot of games people hated, and hated games other loved. So thats not a problem with me, its my opinion anyway i don't make critic over a list of grade or whatever would make it valid to people.

I still can backup my though when it come the THe WItcher (the first) and Gothic 4. Gameplay of the gothic is better and less buggy, animations the same, better quality history and dialogs for sure. Gothic is overall less rich, but just play way better, which is not strange since the witcher is made 3 years before Gothic 4.

Metacritic already made some nice mistakes, now i don't know about those particular games i never go to metacritic in fact. And honestly when i see they mark Gothic to less than 5 and The witcher to 8.7 i'm conforted in my opinion about metacritic. Obviously they don't use the same bases of judgement as i do. If anything would separate those game it would be a point or2 at most, the score is almost the double.

So what make you thing The witcher is twice as good? did it miss some of its features? did it have some bugs i'm not aware of?...

Last it seam nobody really liked the combat system of The witcher, its not like i'm the only one wiht that opinion here.

They are mostly known for GOG which is one of the most respected online distribution services, other than their 2 games that is.

The Witcher universe is a world where the creatures from our nightmares are real and they plague the living. And to combat this nightmare a group of men and women have used alchemy to sacrifice part of their humanity to protect the rest of the living. Through alchemy they can achieve the abilities they need in order to combat creatures that are far more powerful than a mortal. For their sacrifices this group is respected, feared, and hated by the people they have given so much to protect. This is the reason why I like the Witcher, it shows a hero with flaws and nobility just like all true heroes. It is not the generic hero that makes all the right choices and knows exactly what to do in any given situation.  The Witcher is more like humanity in the fact that it shows that even the best of us can stumble and fall, while even the worst of us can make the right choice and become the light in the darkness.  Just because the only thing you got out of the Witcher 2 was “nudity, cursing, and in-game sex” does not mean that is the only thing the game has to offer.  In fact for some of the fans that is the least of what this game offers.

He didn't mention DA2 anywhere, he said ME 1, 2 and DA:O or DA1. Not to mention tastes can't be discused.

On topic: I liked the game, don't mind the more action style combat and the story feels different being more "real". Felt it was too short tho, seemed shorted than the first one.

I'm aware its based on a book. So are many other games as well. Heck Mass Effect has a book!!! And the main character is canonicaly a guy, however you can still chose to play the main character as a girl. Not to mention Darth Revan in KoToR is also a man by default but still playable as a woman. Many games even Baulder's Gate 1 & 2 allow you a choice of gender even though their books had male lead characters.

definitely rpg of the year (like first witcher) yes it has some minor bug's and combat is rather hard but patches probably will solve all issues

  • SwaneaSwanea Member UncommonPosts: 2,401

The witcher 1 was pretty meh.  Combat was rather boring, personally, and the voice acting was atrocious.  I'd put it down near GW1 VA.

Maybe I'll get W2 in a few months when it's half off on steam.

Oh, and funny how no one screams "why is this here" unlike other single player rpgs the site has brought up from other big companies :P.

Seriously now, can you imagine Geralt being a woman? He is like the Al Bundy of mediaval times.. there's just no way to spin it. Personally I couldn't be happier with this, and I've played at least 3 female chars in Kotor, Fallout 3 and Fallout:NV.

A female Geralt would just seem unnatural.

Needless to say a definite RPG of the year unless Bethesda pulls out something incredible, which I hope they do, haven't had a high budget open world RPG in years.

I don't think anyone wants a female Geralt *shudder*  Rather, the option for a female main character, who would be scripted to fit the role.  Or, what I'd personally prefer, creating my own character, with the character's responses kept vague enough to leave more to the imagination.  I want to be able to pretend it's my character I'm playing, not theirs, whatever the gender.

To me, that's what RPGs are all about, with heavily scripted predefined characters being more of an action game thing.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

This is Witcher and  unlike the other games that allows you to create your character this one is based on a book and considered a sequel in some way..

Taking off Geralt kills all the point of the game, it would just be another fantasy rpg like Dragon Age..

Well this is based after a series of novels. Having more protagonists would defeat the purpose of the game. While I agree I much prefer being able to create my own character, it just wouldn't feel right in this game.
