Is there any hope for me?

I'm looking for a game with an engaging crafting system, where crafted gear can be the best in the game, and item decay as the main gear replacement mechanic. Also should have open world PvP with no looting, and limited alts to prevent people from being completely self-sufficient. Absence of levels/permanent classes is also a plus. Anything out there that might work? Thanks in advance for any ideas.

That's very specific. Can't think of any game like that. What games have you played previously?

I have played SWG Pre-CU, WoW, AoC, WAR, Aion, RIFT, LotRO... All but SWG and WoW were played at launch for a month or two then quit.

EVE has what you want, but with looting and all items lost on death.

Wurm can go either way, depending on which server you play on (PVE or PVP).

FFXIV has the need to go to other players to repair your gear, and they make some of the best gear in game, though theres no PVP.

Maybe a Tale in the Desert would be something that works for you? From what I'm reading it's very heavily tradeskill oriented.

A Tale in the Desert is a Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game (MMO) set in ancient Egypt. The game focuses on crafting and trading, mixed with strong social challenges.

You can download the game client for free. After you've played 24 hours, we'll ask if you'd like to subscribe for $13.95 per month.

    Good luck!

There are games that have most those things, but none that does not have player looting.

If you can see past the player looting, I suggest looking into Ultima Online or Darkfall. Darkfall might not have that much of an economy though. Ultima might be hard to establish yourself in since the game has been around for so long.

If you want a pure PvE game (but also one with a real world currency) then check out Entropia Universe.

Eve might be good, but I ahve never played it so cannot comment.

I haven't played the game myself, but I heard Ryzom has a deep crafting system and is one of the main focuses of the game. I heard you could actually level up with it too.

Thanks very much for the replies. I've had an EVE account for several years but it has been inactive for the vast majority of the time. I guess I never really got in to it because I couldn't figure out what to so while my skills trained, and didn't really try that hard to. I'm trying it again with a more mature attitude and I'll see what happens.

Are there any AAA titles coming out that will try to veer away from the WoW-style gear hamster wheel? I'm all for gear replacement of some kind, but I can't stand farming raids and dungeons for hours on end.

I'm going to suggest GW2 for the near future, perhaps TOR, hard to say on that one either.

Tera might also be a sleeper title.

Guild Wars 2 is the only one on my radar that fits that description. Archage looks like it may be pretty cool, but it could be a complete disaster too.

I Think ArcheAge is more to your description

because i believe in GW2, best gear probably drop from World Bosses, not from players

where in ArcheAge, everything is player made ( if i remember correctly )

    So What Now?

They said several times that crafted gear will be just as good as comparable leveled gear from other ways.

3 games comes to my mind:

Guildwars 2: very little focus on gear (all gear of the same level have the same power level, you do the hard stuff for the looks of the gear, not the stats), close to no quests (instead more focus on dynamic events and PvP) and you pick your skills from a list.

TSW: No classes, set in a horror version of the modern world.

WoDO: CCPs (Eve) upcomming gothic horror game, seems to have a mix of themepark and sanbox features and focus on powers, not gear.

GW2 and TSW will probably launch late this year or early next. It is the game with most experienced devs and best budget. It is also the game most is known about but keep your eyes out after the others as well.

Here is a vid, there are loads of others around.

All gear of the same level is about as powerful as any other gear of that level, crafted, bought or dropped. It will just look different.

Archage of course works as well.
