1. mesmer - the one completely unique to gw class, too bad it was a little bad in pve
2. warrior - great survival and one of the best burst dmg
3. elementalist - great damage along with wards, blinds and snares. especially wards, loved those.
it will really depend how the group play will work in gw2 however.
im really into versatile support kind of play. not sure which of the classes will offer that kind of enjoyable experience.
dungeons and dragons druid is a good example of what i want. world of warcraft's druid and shaman were fun.
obviously im into animal related fantasy so Norn will be my playable race. it will depend on how much the transformations will affect the gameplay, how often they can be used and which proffession could use them most.
ill try to avoid the most popular proffesion however to avoid even slightest chance of gw prophecies warrior/monk's fate xD
my vote goes to the guardian,i like the warrior class too,but the best video ive seen so far was gameplay of sword/torch guardian http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTKcVAgoCYE
Yep, after having thought about it I have to say that my favourites are still Mesmer and Engineer, they both do so much to break from the usual restrictions and out of the mold of typical fantasy. I'll enjoy playing both. To be honest, I kind of wish that AerenaNet had dumped one of hte other classes and gone with something else that was a little more unique.
Mesmer and Engineer tie for my two top favourite though, hard to choose between them, which is why I'll have a character for both! And yep, I will be going with a charr Engie despite that being typical, due to the fact that most games tend to have the little people as the Engineers andt he beast race as dumb tribals, I enjoy my subversions, so playing an intelligent charr that fits in with the world will suit me down to the ground.
Charr Mesmer, too, and i'll be dealing with all the prejudices there, that'll be really interesting. I hope they work that into the personal storyline.
It's new and shiny. I don't think it will be the most popular profession, but, do the poll after they release the 'mesmer' style class and it'll look the same, the new one will be high, but it will level out before the release.

I don't think that's the case. There have been many people in previous pages saying that they were waiting for something like the Engineer to come along. I suspect a vast majority of the charr fans are going to have an Engineer - if not as a main then at least as an alt, it's just such an integral thing to them. It may be hard to understand if you're not someone who follows more modern fantasy (anything post Tolkien), but yeah, people dig this stuff!
I wouldn't be surprised, to be honest, if the Engineer is one of the most popular professions in the game. Not the most popular, no, I'd be insane to suggest that, but I'm convinced it'll be one of the top three. There's just a lot of fun in that profession that goes beyond ye olde typical fantasy fare. Turrets, jump shots, grenades, weapon kits, and more will make for a really unique play experience that we've not really seen in a fantasy MMORPG before, in both looks and mechanics. As great as the Mesmer was/is, it just looks like yet another magic user, which is a shame (hopefully they've brushed this up with a new approach to the Mesmer for GW2), but the Engineer is something truly special. And though other games have had engineers, the name is really the only thing it shares with them, appearance and mechanics are totally new.
I find the profession a breath of fresh air. Clockpunk in an MMORPG... how glorious. To be honest, if I don't see at least one Professor Elemental from those who play as humans, I'll be disappointed. Make that happen. But anyway, it's something very new. Warrior, Elementalist, Ranger, Necromancer, Thief, and Guardian all have very clear analogues in past MMORPGs, but the Engineer has none. Even if the Mesmer was struck from the profession list, I'd still play this for the Engineer and love the hell out of it.
If we need conclusive proof of its popularity though, create a new poll and link to the pages of the professions in the order they were revealed. Then see which one turns out to be the top.
Engineer isn't as unique as you think. Engineer from Warhammer Online was very similar, not the mechanic with kits and weapon sets and such (definitely like this unique take by Anet) but still a rifle shooting, grenade throwing, turret setting profession.
Anyway, i can't really pick a favorite. I'm stuck between Warrior, Necro, Engineer and Ranger. Can't chose a favorite / main. Will end up making all 4 of those and PVPing on them until I decide which is most fun in PVP for me.
It's funny to see the Elementalist placed in last and Thief, that got so many people interested in it before, lost a lot of popularity in this poll. But I guess this is just a poll with some hundreds of possible players. AND, it's funny to see the Engineer with so many people interested in it although it got a lot of people complainning about it.

My thinking is that part of it is people being most excited or upset by the newest thing to stir the blood of the fanbase. I think another part of it is the engineer is such a deviation from other, more traditional fare, that is has some vehemently against it, but other equally excited to play one, so in a poll like this, it has a large number of votes.
I imagine if we made the inverse of this poll (least favourite), engineer would get a large portion of those votes as well. Whereas things like elementalists are almost a given in a fantasy game, and so get less pre-game enthusiasm, one way or another.

It's like I said, the only reason that Ele is unpopular I think is because it's kind of boring. We've had mages since Gandalf, so it's overly familiar and not too fantastic any more. "A guy that can shoot fireballs from his palms? *yawn*" I think we'll see more interest in the Mesmer, since that's a non-standard magic profession, if magic professions are your bag.

I played Warhammer Online but I clearly didn't play the same Warhammer Online that you did. @_@ The engineer I played there was much more limited compared to the description of the GW2 engineer, what with the weapon kits, turrets, grenades, glue gun, jump shot, flamethrowers, and all that...
Yeah, I think we must have played very different Warhammer Onlines. The engineer I played was much more muted by comparison.
(The Moral of the Story: People are assuming that the two are alike because they're both called 'Engineer.')

Hm, that's a rather interesting occurence, because on GW2G the Ele fares much better.

As for me, I will be playing an Engineer. I'm one of those who were waiting for the third adventurer to be revealed and unless the Mesmer totally blows my mind I'll most probably stick with my choice.

Or we could assume that you have your GW2 Colored glasses on.
Some of the mechanics are similar. "Some" of the look is even similar. You can't blame people for noticing.
And don't delude yourself, its NOT just the name. I don't think anyone is screaming ripoff, neither am I.

I'll just put this here. It's from an interview(2006) about GW Factions. (www.computerandvideogames.com/136538/features/guild-wars-factions/)

We started with a simple question: What type of character did we want to play? Three answers came up more often than any others: Assassin, Shapeshifter, and Engineer. All three of these represented exciting directions we could follow.

The Ritualist would be the Guild Wars equivalent of an FPS engineer: a great support character, able to help defend allies, excellent at ground control. We could use bound Spirits as the fantasy version of a gun turret and introduce new "weapon spells" to give him a way to provide offensive and defensive enhancements to allies.

Some of the mechanics aren't the same at all, because Warhammer Online doesn't play anything at all like WoW, I know because I was there for the beta and I hung around after release for a few months, I was there when the public events when dead, and left at the mass exodus when everyone else left, when we discovered that that game wasn't much good. I got to play me a bit of Engineer in that period, and the way the mechanics are shown/described are nothing like Warhammer Online's.
Yes, there are some shared names, but the aesthetics are different, the playstyle is different, the type of combat is different, and people are just whining because they believe that, hey, if something shares a name with something else, then it must automatically be exactly the same. It's not. It's not even remotely like the Warhammer Engineer from my understanding because the games are so different. It would be like saying that TF2's Medic is like WoW's Priest. It's kind of ridiculous.
Yes, there are some shared names, I've never denied that, but what I'm saying is that the mechanics and aesthetics of the class are vividly different. And if you want to prove otherwise then stop blowing hot air and opening with insults and put your money where your mouth is - prove it. I was there, so I'll know if you're spouting BS and I'll call it. Show me a video example of the Warhammer Engineer being like that of Guild Wars 2. You won't manage it, because they're nothing alike.
The Moral of the Story, Again: People get too hung up on names and don't bother to reality-check.
Or we could assume that you have your GW2 Colored glasses on.

Both games stole them from FPS games, that is why they are somewhat similar.
They might become popular in some PvP parts but I have my doubts how fun and useful the class will be in PvE.
I think I stick with theif myself, while that class is pretty common have I never seen or played any game that handle the class anywhere near how GW2 does it.

Warrior,I like to smash people in the face ,although all the professions offer something for everyones taste.
Perhaps in future expansions? .
I voted thief, but I also like warrior and engineer a lot. I will have to try out all 3 of them.
Can't decide on a favorite until I play all of them at least once ;-)
Same as GW1... tried all the professions.

WTF? No subscription fee?
I have to say, asuran guardian all that way, that became my main the day they released the guardian prof
Also, over in GW2guru they have a similar poll
Is Ele that unpopular in the general community aswell? Are there polls on the O'forums yet?

I want to reborn as a Sylvari.
