Hey all,
I've learned a few good lessons over the past few years, like cooking healthy foods, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, and not to believe anything a MMO dev says about the games they're making. I told myself after being burned by AoC, Vanguard, Warhammer, and the SoE revamping of EQ2 into WoW HD I'll never play a mmo on launch I'll wait about 60 to 90 days to see how the players react on the boards.
I've watched Rift on this site mainly to see how players react to it but all I've gotten is "Rift is just another WoW clone with better grafix" and you know silly things like that from people who think WoW was the first MMO and everything clones it even though all MMO's are basicly clones, I dowloaded the 14 day Rift trial, and to be honest I don't think the WoWzers shouting it's a clone know anything of gaming outside of WoW Rift to me seems more like a fully working version of Vanguard (easier version) and I'm having a blast. My point of this post is simple really as gamers lets do each other a favor and let WoW be WoW and judge other games based on what they offer, I think we'll find games like Rift are truely worth better than being labled WoW 2.0.

I really would not put Vanguard and Rift in the same boat (rift doesn't have boats). I am enjoying Rift also but to say it's like Vanguard, hmm.............
I'm actually surprised by how much I like RIFT. I absolutely hated it in beta and I didn't find it interesting at all, but whenever I play it now, I just really enjoy myself. It has a good storyline (playing Defiant at the moment). I've just really had fun.
I personally like WoW but I don't compare everything to it. If I did that, I'd just be driving myself insane. :P
Actually, it reminds me of Vanguard a lot at times. Though everytime I think about that, I get depressed. Vanguard... is one of my favorite games, but I can't bring myself to play it.
If only Vanguard had some love by dev's, it would be the best
I totally agree.
Rifts problem is that it is very close to most other MMOs.
If you played LOTRO, EQ2, Wow, VG or similar games very little will feel new for you.
You play the same quests, combat feels more or less the same, crafting is a simplified standard version and so on.
The 2 new things really is the character customization and the rifts/invasions but the few classes kinda is the drawback to how much you can customize the one you chooces. The "dynamic events" tend to get boring after a while, they are very repetetive and occur far too often.
Rift is an excellent game in most ways, and perfect for someone knew to MMOs. But I have been playing since Meridian 59 and '96 and after a few days it felt like I already played the game for years and were tired of it.
Calling it a Wow clone might not be fair but what people are complaining about is that a lot of players are tired of the same old and Rift just feels like most of the other games we been playing.
The sad thing is that I feel that if they just change the combat system enough to be different would I probably still be playing it, it would have been enough to make the game feel different from the rest.
If you still think the game is fun after a month, great. But most of the people here thought Rift was really fun for the first week, it was after that most people started to write whine threads about how much it suck.
The game does not suck and it is a great introduction to the genre, but it is too close to all other games to stand out and become one of the truly big games.
It is a lot more like WoW than Vanguard, though after Vanguard failed they did start making it more like WOW as well. But again the initial post is flawed, people who have been around forever think this is a WoW clone, people who haven't played older MMOs probably just think this is the only way to make one and don't realize it is a clone.
Not enough.
A relaunch would be needed.
Some upgrading and new content together with a relaunch (maybe under a different name) and a large team supporting and patching it would make it into an excellent game that I would subscribe too.
My hopes is that they actually take the good ideas from VG and use them in EQ Next together with some good programming (one can always hope).
What does this post have to do with what you titled the thread? "I must say Rift has proven not to listen"......mmkay, what??? Please explain what I'm missing.

End game mechanics are a copy paste from WoW (WotLK). Most soul talents are copy pasted from WoW. Its actually the nearest to a WoW clone to be released, with a subscription.
The setting is simply different, with a few elements from WAR and EQ2 thrown in.
Sorta how i was.. I actually canceled my pre order after my 3rd beta event.. Missed out on the earlie launch of the game because of it.. Only reason i gave Rift another shot was cuz I had jus left my corp in EvE and was really bored.. Glad i did because i'am having such a good time with this game now.. I got no work today so i found myself waking up at 5am and glued to my p/c already lol.. Been playin for the past 3hr's, so close to 50 and being able to raid.. I can't wait.. Raiding is something i've never done in a MMO but hear so much about, and everyone in my guild loves Rifts raids.
Currently Playing:
Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta
EQ2 is......WoW HD?
is that too high a comment?
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
Agreed
The thread title is very misleading and things have basically become mostly comparisons and talk of other games. We have a thread for comparisons here: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/306250/READ-The-Rift-World-of-WarcraftWarhammerEtc-Comparison-Thread.html if you'd like to discuss that.
