In todays age of the MMO, few games strive to really capture any emotion. I had turned a blind eye to the launch of Conan like many others, considering it a fallen game. As time progressed however, I decided I would venture forth into this world of Hyboria on my own terms... And Holy Rusted Metal Batman, this game is simply astonishing.
I have gone well past the starter area (which received amazing praise and for good reason) into the new expansion content and the game just does not let up in it's brutal grace.
No other mmo I have played to date ( long list) has had such a feeling of atmosphere: be it the music that rips my soul to another place, the scenery, or the lore surrounding me at every step. Even with the "instances" and zone lines no other game has captured me like this.
This is one of the few games I can actually level an alt in, as I am usually a one character kind of player. The combat and classes are just too well done for me to feel any other way towards leveling. The pvE aspects of this game shine amazingly compared to what I see on the horizons of the MMO market.
As for the pvp, I haven't had such a feeling of a true hunt for a very long time. This game captures what is vital to those of competitive nature, and continues to strive towards providing it's followers what they request. Be it the class revamps, graphical updates, masses of content to go through, I'm just very impressed with the turnaround Funcom has done.
I know I'm sounding bonerz over this game that has been out for a while now, but I am truly glad I decided to give this title a shot, and hopefully many others will venture down the same path as well.

Glad to see you are enjoying Age of Conan. I was pretty happy with the improvements made by Funcom while I was trying other titles, and I'm definately glad that I came back. Age of Conan does a good job at creating a gritty and barbaric world that suits the lore, and the music is second to none.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.
The game is good for some 3 month. After that time you've played through the hole content with three different characters and suddenly it looses all of it's initial appeal.
It's just another level/class-based themepark that doesn't keep you interested once you've tried all the rides in it a couple of times and have collected all the epics.
Sadly, for me, the graphics and music are the ONLY good things about AoC. I can't stand the melee combat and so I only play the casters, as they feel "right" to me, however having only one starting area, and one that makes me play to level 20 through it on each and every alt, is a horrible game design decision. Plus, the expansion is all about reputation grinding. Another mechanic I never liked in ANY game (unless it was doable via your normal quest progression, like the rep in ghostlands in WoW)
Also, the community....by far the worst and most vulgar I have ever come across. If the game mechanics, combat and community were changed or different, than I would have to agree with the OP. However, reality sucks.
Ive just gone back to AoC 2 weeks ago....from a long and kinda disapointing vaca from the game and i realy happy to see all the improvments. I played from launch till the "big fix" which made the game nearly unplayable.with the new content and real fixes its the game I rember and wanted to play.hope you enjoy you time there I am now.
Age of Conan is today a pretty fun game but it have rather little content.
Particularly the starting area gets boring fast, many altoholics have played through it 8 times or more. The really should have added one for the expansion.
If the game would have been 3 times as large I would probably still play it. Now it feels like I done it and are done with the game since long ago, I went back for a month after the expansion and the new 80 zones did help the game a lot (Khesh was a pain when it was the only high level zone) but they really should have added zones all the way, not one 2-40 and a few 80.
Pretty much agree, here, though like Loke, it just didn't have the content to keep me. Particularly non-combatwise.
The music and gfx are terrific, and playing an HoX just made me giddy! :P
The melee combat is the best part of the game. It breaks away from the God awful boring mechanics you claim to like.
The sad part about Conan is how the game is right now is how it should of been at launch. It had so much potential to be a great game but it just released to early imo.
all expect bori i dont know wtf the people at funcom were thinking when they came up with this. mine rocks for pvp points? worst idea i have ever heard of.
yeah, I don't really like the idea myself but I do appreciate what they were trying to do. Create an area where there was open world PvP and give people a reason to hang out there without alienating the people that don't want to PvP. It's something beyond structured mini-games, and seiges but it's not the greatest idea by any means.

And now we have the Blood and Glory PVP SERVER RULESET COMING! RAAAAAAAAAAWR! I love it.

I liked it every times I tried the game, but after a while some problems grow on you. For example, how dungeons are not well balanced such as no one really does them at prescribed levels. Or how it is difficult to find data about mechanics without having to dig through mountains of outdated stuff. But it's still a decent game if you want to level few toons :-)
I see few complaints about the unique starting area. Except for the destiny questline, it's not as linear... You have 3 zones and Tortage's surrounding to work with. I suggest you buy one of the starter package that comes with xp potions, and use it as soon as you get to Tortage. It speeds things up.
On which server did you play? Wiccana's community used to be nice and mature...
And that is why I RP. To break free from the Theme Park.
To add another layer to an MMO and I have to say that AOC on top of all that was mentioned does an excellent job in regards to RP as well.
The graphics, /emotes, Animations, Chat System, Scripts, Character creation, Outfits and clothing, Haircuts, Blackeyes, Tattoo's you name it. They make it really is to bring a character to "Life" in teh world they surround you with.
Great game.
Agreed, although I found this only to be true on the PVP Servers, Particularly Cimmeria.
You have to realise the kind of game Conan is, in order to understand the type of community that has evolved from it. Conan is a brutal, competitive game, on both PvP and PVE servers. The guild rankings alone can show you this nature.
I would be very interested, however, to know of any pvP oriented / competitve game that has a good community. I still find the general populace of AoC to be quite helpful, even if they are very competitive.
The expansion has some AMAZING content, and the "grind" has been revamped. One of the best expansions I have seen for any mmo to date. I applaud them for not simply raising the level cap, making old content rather worthless like every other mmo to date.
As for the combat, melee is far superior to any of the caster mechanics. YOu may be used to simplified systems, so lean towards casters more. That is a personal preference, but I would refrain from making comparisons with wow. That is perhaps why they feel "right" to you, because it has some of the combat dynamics wow uses?
They are also currently re working a lot of the older areas, and perhaps introducing a new starter area. Either way, AoC is moving forward.

One Word...Fatality!
The European RP server is dead or very low population. Like Vanguard AOC is had it's chance and missed the opportunity when it first released. Vanguard is in the same boat but at least funcom are still working on AOC and it's about to get a rebirth.
I have played Vanguard on and off since release(always have an account open) and can only wish SOE felt the same way about Vanguard as Funcom do about AOC.
I have a 80 Bear Shammy and 80 Assassin but have not played in a while.
