256mb of RAM is going to KILL you in SWG. Theres no way the game will run well on that little. At least get 512mb, if you can 1024mb would be pristine. 256mb just wont cut it these days.

My fiancees computer has 256...I had to turn off ALL the graphical details to get it to semi-playable speeds...except in town where it still is unplayable.

I started with 256  (visiting cities is almost impossible with that )   then upgraded to 512, then 1 Gig.

It makes a WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. IMHO enjoying SWG on the technical side is all about RAM.

Yup 256 will kill ya in SWG. I went from that to 512 and noticed a huge difference. I then went to 768 and that seemed to be the sweet spot. I now have 1gig and dont notice any difference.

My 1 gig of RAM doesn't help lag really because of being stuck on 56k, nothing i do reduces it so i have to go on the server in the morning because none of the US people are on the server so its ok.

When most people are on my pings get around 6000ms in cities usually averaging 3000, and 1000 in the wilderness.

On a similar note my network status window (showing ping etc) breaks as soon as i load a different area, for instance getting to annother planet or using a shuttleport.

It wont respond again till i log back on even if i close and open it etc.

Yeah, 256 mb ram will kill you in swg, literally, I can't count how many times I died as a result of that.  But then I got better hardware.  I was running with 1gb ram and lag was almost non-existant.  But this is all pre-CU, I heard that lagg issues went through the roof after it went live.

Yeah, if you are on dial-up modem the best gaming rig wont help you. Thats a connection problem and nothing that the server or client can solve.

Lag is not a problem for me post-Cu except for (unexplainable) the area around The Village. Which does NOT have that many players or structures nearby.

get a gig but then again the CU has caused some bad lag and the "rubberband" effect is back in place!

I have successfully played SWG on 56k connection. If you are having problems serious enough to make it hard to play, I suggest customizing the game features. Starting with cutting down the view distance. You say you have the most problems in cities. Cutting down all options to minimum while in cities should help. Especially "view distance".

Already ahead of you :P Did that ages ago it hardly does anything because even though the game isnt rendering people it still detects them and thir movements. I turned em back up now anyway it doesnt make much dufference and it was just depressing it looking so ugly and my uber pc can easily run it on full settings apart from the modem :S

Anyone got any help on the network status window problem??

Did you try to do a data trace to find out which internet switch takes the longest on the way from your computer to the SOE server ? That may help to locate the source of the lag .. client, server or in between.

You only have 3gb left of hard disc space? Ummm, I suggest you fix that ASAP. You barely have enough room for a swapfile.

Did you mean you have 256mb of video ram or system ram? If you have only 256 mb of system ram, huge problem, you won't be able to run the game. I recommend atleast 1gb.

What video card are you using?

Correct me if I'm wrong... isn't the minimum requirements for SWG say 512MB of RAM and Recommended spec of 1GB? It's been a while since I looked at the box but I think I remember reading that.

Also, the game plays FINE on a 56kb connection, I've done it. If you're having connection problems I'd run a ping test to the login server and see what your latency is. Then do a traceroute to the login server and see where your largest lag point is.

I'd also strongly suggest NOT using AOHell if that's what you're using. Their network wreaks HAVOK with almost every MMO out there.

The best ISP to use would be a large local ISP that has more than one pop into the internet. Barring that get Earthlink. It's the most reliable nationwide one that I've used in the past. Currently I use a local ISP that supports multilink so I can use both my modems and get 105kbps on my backup connection. My primary link is cable but if it's down I have to be able to work so I have multilink as my backup.

Also, if you only have 3gb of free hard drive space I'd HIGHLY recommend getting a bigger drive. With only 3GB of space your drive is probably fragmented to hell and back and, depending on your swap file settings it's probably causing problems there too. Once a drive is more than 80% full any application which use heavy disk access (games) performance really starts to drop.

    Good luck!

Probably, but my laptop is living proof that 512mb really doesn't cut it. I have to turn off mostly everything for it to be semi tolerable.

Right... I didn't mean 512mb would give great performance just that if he's using 256mb of RAM he is playing below minimum recommended specs.

That's all :) Sorry for any confusion.

My lag gets crazy because i'm on one of the most populated servers, Corbantis.  I only have 255MB of RAM, Verizon Highspeed DSL, and 12 MB of integrated graphics.  AND I can't upgrade because it's on a wireless laptop.  So if I ever have to go into a crouded city i just zoom in all the way, look directly at the ground, and put on the map useing the keys ctrl m.  I put it on burst run and I can get through a city easily.  I have to thank my good friend Movack for that.
