FPSGuru's Top 10 FPS of All Time

akiira69akiira69 Member UncommonPosts: 615

I beleive there are games that supercede the ones that the FPSGuru team put on their top 10 list.

right now it has(in order)

10) Left 4 Dead 2

9) Unreal Tournament 2004

8) Operation Flashpoint

7) Goldeneye

6)  Call of Duty

5) System Shock 2

4) COunter Strike

3) Crysis

2) Dues Ex

1) Half-Life

IMO they left out some of the most important games of the FPS Genre. Games that without them the ones on the list would never happen. Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, and Duke Nukem 3D. ALso 2 of the games on the list arent even pure FPS. System Shock 2 and Dues Ex are both RPG Games. and if you want to talk about kick ass FPS RPG's then you need to add Elder Scolls, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.

well that is my opinion, whats yours?

"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"

I believe and agree with many of the posters on the comments of FPSGuru. The topic is a great for a starter piece on the website, but I think it's just badly done.

Left 4 Dead 2? What did that do for the genre besides just being fun? A lot of FPS are fun, but I wouldn't put every one of them in a Top 10 (maybe a Top 10 Favorite). Additionally, I'd say Left 4 Dead 1 is the much better candidate since that's the one that made everyone talk about it. But I still wouldn't even put that one in a Top 10 list...

DE and SS2 are great, masterpieces of games, but I believe FPS/RPGs and FPRPGs belong in a seperate category. Games like DE is just not comparable to a game like Quake or even today's Modern Warfare because they play so vastly different. Same with games like Dark Messiah and Hexen 2.

I'm also amused that a lot of the people commenting mention the same three games: Quake, Duke Nukem 3d and Doom & Wolftenstein. And for good reason!

Quake made shooters 3d; it simply did it first, and it did it very well. This series was also the first that made MP on shooters hugely popular (QuakeCon? Even Gamespy and all their networks was birthed for this series).

Duke Nukem 3D was extremely well crafted and it was fun. It was also the first game that had the gun NOT held in the center, something that has remained unchanged ever since its first inception. It was even the first shooter with 3d cutscenes. On a side note, it also did crawling through vents first and was the first to feature the use of security cams, things that are sometimes attributed to Half-Life instead.

Doom (and Wolfenstein). Wolftenstein did it first, but Doom was what refined that model enough to garner all the attention it did. Like it or not, Doom was basically the pioneer to the genre, and Wolftenstein was it's daddy :P

Overall, just seems like a "My Top 10 Favorite" instead. Operation Flashpoint was a LOT of fun, but let's face it, it's not remembered at all by those that didn't play it. It just didn't really do anything for the genre. But IF you were to include it, how would you not include Rainbow Six? That was the first shooter that did tactical and squad based gameplay right.

Really poorly done article for the top 10 picks. They left out the likes of duke nukem and far cry!! I call this BS as a few titles are rpg on that list to. Such a crying shame.

Matter of taste this list would be alot different if i would make one. Where is quake3, Medal of honor 1, Doom, Soldiers of fortune 2 or Return to castle wolfenstein?

Goldeneye altho a console FPS still one best ever should be higher on list then call of duty, crysis and counter strike a mod lol.

One who made this list is obvious valve fan lol.

Heh, along with the list not putting in some very important titles from the 90s, they left out Rainbow 6, forerunner for tactical & squad FPS games.

"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." Oh snap, burn

Interesting that I had more fun with Borderlands than any of those other FPS listed (except for Dues Ex).

    2) Counter Strike

    1) Unreal Tournament 2004

Frames Per Second? Technically all FPS means is First Person Shooter. Many "FPS" games are not played in first person. And a whole slew of them (incuding multiplayer) have heavy RPG elements. "FPS" is a misleading acronym. It should just be "Shooter" in my opinion.

Also, nobody has mentioned Bioshock in either thread, thought it is in the top 5 rated PC shooter games with Mass Effect 2 and Half Life according to Metacritic and Gamerankings.com.

Granted should have written maybe "fps elements" as in elements that affect combat, actual core gameplay and not how awesome the gaybar scene was (hi bioware)
