Need help with APB.

KilawuaKilawua Member Posts: 52

When I first start the game it's fine for about 10 minutes or so then the frame rate get's terrible and after that it keeps alternating between good and bad. Can anyone tell me what the problem might be? Thank you.

Sounds like poor game coding to me.

Might be a lot of things.. Could help to have your specs.. Also, have you tried the /fps command ? Are those framerate drops, connection issues ?....

APB still have it's own forum, just by the way...

I don't know, but you could check in your taskmanager whether a program called "Pando Media Booster" is running, it seems to interfere with the game sometimes.

If so, kill that process and reboot the game...

You know, two companies now have been developing this game, and it's still not very optimized. I love APB, they need to do some work though before it's close to playable, the combat is terrible and the framerate drops often.

It's not connection im pretty sure i used the /fps. I was getting like 30-35 in a car 35-45 on foot but randomly it goes to like 10-15 for a while not just a few seconds. I also checked and Pando Media Booster wasn't running. I really don't know what's wrong.

It appears the game has major memory leaks for some people, I also had them (though in my case the game just crashed after ~30 minutes of play) I solved it by following a solution somewhere on the internet that had me adding a command line to have the game utilize more than 2GB of memory.

I don't know where though (looked, couldn't find it anymore) and I wouldn't recommend it because it can apparently give trouble with your OS.

They really need to work on optimising and memory issues. And full 32bit support, the graphics of this game aren't that nice that people with 32bit OS's would only be able to play it on low.

Oh ok so I should just wait and hope hey fix it I guess.

Its not poor coding... its the unreal engin..

The game requires a great system, there ae a lot of highly (more than most games) avatars and cars, theres a lot of world items in each screen...the game is immensly taxing.

Your framerate bounces around for a simple reason, sometimes your away from the action, other times your in the middle of several teams doing missions, a lot of sht is happening, lots of things blowing up, lots of texture on the map that need to be constantly updated.

They need to raise their state system requirements, both min and recommended, this will avoid a lot of "my system is better than the min req but the game laggs it must be a bad game" complaints.

You can switch instances to a lesser popluated area, also, there are ways to nerf your graphic settings though a config file, you might want to look into that, as you cant turn off the fluff graphic setting in game (if im not mistaken).  Im assuming your playing the game on its lowest settings, if not, do it.

Theres been times where the entire instance(possibly) is in the same screen as me, nearly 100 people, all engaged in crazy stuff, that will lag any system.  Ive even had sound "lag" where there were too many sounds occuring at once, granted i was also playing imported mp3's on top of everyone elses music blaring from their cars.

This is what happens when you have a game that offers an insane amount of character customization with (premium accounts) able to put 50 diffrent tatoos on a character and 100 diffrent decorations on clothes, and 50 diffrent decorative items on their cars..most will not be preset but custom made as well...

Also, from what i hear, the game is nearly unplayable on a 32 bit OS any way you shake it (again why they should modify their system requirements)

90% of the time the game runs fine for me (make sure you delete pando media booster as well, as it could be lagging your network) and when it does start to lag terribly on the FPS and latency side, i switch instances or maps (switching maps puts you on a non packed instance automatically)...doing this works, however like i said, you get into a jam packed area and theres not much you can do but go somewhere else (granted your mission objective isnt there)

Basically theres no magic code that will fix this, unless they standardize all character cars and clothes to a few presets like most games.  Only thing to do is to upgrade or find a less taxing game on your system. barring you modify the config file, put the setting on min and switch instances when yours gets too crowded and still cant get a decent game in without lag.

Well it's not that im in the action when it does it. I could be standing still and it would still randomly do it.

Well at least you can log in.  After I hit start nothing happens and then a beep 20 seconds later.

  • strangerdangstrangerdang Member Posts: 233

you both are running a 32 bit OS i assume....right?

    Yes I am.

Ya im running 32-bit but i don't understand why it can run fine and then run so crappy in a split second.

its like the guy said earlier, if people have massive amounts of char custimization the game bogs down pretty bad when it loads there stuff up on a server. they dont have to be right next to u and can be a few blocks away and it will still lag u out. if u see lotsa black cars driving around its cause the game is still trying to load it and its struggling. i had the same problem on my old computer. there is also a memory leak in the game and i ran into that problem about 1-2 hours into playing and would have to relog to fix it. i had 8 gigs of memory so it could be that 2.

  • strangerdangstrangerdang Member Posts: 233

Well theres no memory leak, its just that the game really needs to use more than 2gigs of memory, even at low setting, especially if your importing and using your own music library.

So on a 32 bit system, you are constantly bouncing off your max ram and using vitual "hard drive" memory which will lag you.

Also, you might not see them, but a 6vs6 team might be driving though an area close enough to require your system to load them, stuff like that will give you spikes of low FPS.

I mean it happens to me, im not on max setting, i have 8gigs of ram, a quad core and a gtx 260, nothing special but i can easily go from 60 fps to 25 fps when a team enters my area or a bunch of people drive through.

Basically, just about everyone who exceeds the stated system requirements and are having issues playing are using a 32 bit OS. While most of the people who are not having major issues playing are running a 64 bit OS.  The game really likes to sit in the 2.5gigs of ram area.

However there is no memory leak, it just might seem like there is one for those who are capped at 2gigs, being how graphically intense the game is, even on the lowest settings.

Only way i see for them to make the game run buttery smooth on a 32 bit os, would be to disable all customized textures aside from your own, and possibly to refrain from importing your own music.  Even then, just by the nature of the game, if you get enough people and enough mayhem in one area, your going to lag regardless.

I have yet to have a game ruining lag experience, when the game does get laggy on the latency side i simply switch to another instance and the problem is solved.

There is still a memory leak, some 64bit users are getting memory crashes also particularly running at highest graphics settings. With graphics settings on high can watch the memory usage increase (/FPS command) the longer you play until it eventually crashes. They are still working on several gamebreaking bugs like this that were reported in closed beta testing, some of them are hard to squash.

if you are having drama on a machine with 32Bit OS which as 4GB or More of RAM installed in it you can always try the /3gb switch (which just instructs windows to allocate this memory to applications) like this:

*I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR HARM YOU MAY DO TO YOUR COMPUTER IF YOU TRY THE FOLLOWING STEPS*

Right-click Command Prompt in the Accessories program group of the Start menu. Click Run as Administrator.

At the command prompt, enter "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072"

    Restart Your computer.

If for some reason you have problems and want to undo this change then just:

Right-click on Command Prompt in the Accessories program group of the Start menu. Click Run as Administrator.

At the command prompt, enter "bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa"

    Restart your computer.

For the advanced user you can try 4096 as your switch instead of 3072 but there may be stability issues so consider yourselves warned !

There is also a video on how to do this up on youtube, search for "APB: Reloaded "Out Of Memory" problem (FIX)" althought this is actually not APB specific it helps with lots of programs.

I dont know how else to explain this without being rude...there is no fix other than you getting a 64 bit OS.

Your trying to play a game that is above what your computer can handle smoothly.

It could be your computer, your connection, or anything. I get a constant 60 fps no matter what. I get chop sometimes from lag on the social areas, but as far as I can tell, it's either connection or an issue from your pc.

  • KilawuaKilawua Member Posts: 52

Well i met the required system requirements and its perfectly fine in the social areas. I still think it's like a memory leak or something.

Im not sure you even know what a memory leak is.

Given that you can see in real time the games memory usage witht he /fps command.  Using it, you can clearly see there is no memory leak in the game, however if your a 32bit OS user, your going to run  out of memory at some point, the game is to graphically intense, too many unique and highly detalied teztures to load, and on top of that, im sure were importing music.

There is no memory leak....confirmed to death on the APB forums, and clearly visable in game.

  • KilawuaKilawua Member Posts: 52

Well i turned the graphics to low, made the graphics 64bit and entered a command to make the game have more memory to use and nothing helped..................

  • Hellrazor27Hellrazor27 Member Posts: 55

There are some links on the APB forums that may help you ( i would link them to your but i'm lazy right now ).Also you may want to close things like steam and IE ( or whatever web browser you use ).Also do a memory check and a defrag on your HD, remember the game is still in beta so there are still some bugs.

Personaly I love the game but sometimes it does get laggy ( this is because they are trying to find the right times for maintance ).

Been playing this game off an on for a couple weeks, I have not had much of a problem.  I dropped connection a few times switching districts, but that's it.  I have not seen any indications of memory leaks.  Win 7 64-bit w/ 4GB ram.  The game does use more memory than most, but I don't believe there is an actual memory leak.

Some people even 64 bit users are reporting sudden spikes in memory usage and then crashes. My Brother in law runs a beast of a machine with 8gb and he has this problem which for all intents and purposes seems like a memory leak. Try as I might I havent been able to crash his machine with any of the usual stability testing tools I use on a regular basis.

As for 32 Bit windows, all is not lost if you have 4gb physically installed. Most people find the /3gb switch works for them. You should only run out of memor if you only have 3gb or less of physical memory. My Desktop is running shitty Vista 32 with 4gb of physical RAM but i have had the /3gb switch on for ages and mine is fine even past 4+ hour gaming sessions during Closed Beta it never crashed.
