This is as honest a post as I can make, from two players perspectives. This is the opinion of 2 people only. Me, and my wife.
We play Rift every day. We play on the Carreon shard/server. We have 2 active and played accounts. The population is great, I personaly have no problems getting into warfronts<pvp> unless it is 4am or something. I'd say my average wait time during daylight hours is about 3-8 min for a warfront, my wife says 5-10 min so average that out i guess. The average wait time after about midnight PST is honestly easily over 15+ minutes, The longest we have waited is over an hour. This has happened to us twice in 3 months, both times it was super early in the morning.
I have run across errors, but very few, and they are fixed fast. The game is very stable. The class system is awesome, best I have seen.... Ever! The class system is NOT a ballanced system at all, they have avoided the need for ballance by letting you be whatever class you want at whatever time you want to be it. It is hard to explain to anyone who hasn't played this game how good the class system is.
This game is a Mishmash of WOW, Old EQ, EQ2, and War. The only things super innovative about Rift are the class system and the graphics. It realy needs a Guild bank, and more mount options that aren't just repaints of the same mount. other than that I think it's pretty well polished.
We enjoy the game, have seen no issues with server population, and HIGHLY reccomend it to everyone. Greatest thing about this reccomendation is that we are not 20 year old MMO'ers. We are both long time experienced MMO/RPG players of over 15 years. The best PVE game available, and as far as server population goes, it seems great on the Carreon shard/server.
This is an OPINION. Biased toward RIFT. Because we Like IT, and Disagree with the trolls on this thread. We have no concrete numbers, No data, just an opnion based on our experience playing RIFT on one shard > carrion. GL
even though i'm usually a reader only i've decided to post on this one
tbh if Trion really had 2 mil + accounts in Rift we would know about it from the source - come on! it is a huge, huge success for a MMO to reach that number in less than few months... so i doubt this calculation is anywhere near truth. from advertising point of view announcing huge number of accounts is a proof that game is in good shape... if you're silent about it, it is usually because you have nothing to show off with
2.1 million accounts created? Great. How many are 7 day trials that never paid to play it? How many are 30-day box sales that thought it was a waste of money? How many are people who already cleared all the content and quit in two months?
Using free trials to boast a game's numbers is hilarious.
Now that Rift has legitimately weathered the initial lull as the rush of initial 30-day players passed, talk of server merges is slowly becoming a thing of the past. Rift has 99 servers and the player population is still growing rapidly, making comparisons to Age of Conan and Warhammer increasingly detached from reality. It seems more likely now that we will see more servers in Rift’s future rather than fewer.
What BS. Looking at the server status now, only 1 server is high, the rest are split 50:50 between low and medium... and we all know 'medium' tags means squat.
Compare this to release, where the majority of the servers were on high or full (yes, same time - aussie prime), and well, there's your answer. Well, this combined with the fact that there's now a 1hr+ wait for WF's on my server (was >1 minute during the 1st month), and forming a PUG raid now takes hours (was >30 mins), and towns feel deserted.
And if you have a look on the official forums you will see more threads now than ever asking for server merges.
With all the marketing, heavily reduced price, gold spammers, trials etc etc... you would expect a dramatic increase in 'accounts', but people are kidding themselves if they think 'the population is growing rapidly'.
Sounds like paid advertising to me.
The fact that you're in aussie time and there's a high server is pretty surprising to me. Where in NA, it would be between 2am and 5am. Having any servers on high would be pretty crazy. I personally don't get it, do you like the game? Yes? No? That's all you should need to know. Are there enough people for you?
"Trion has remained conspicuously silent about current subscription numbers for Rift, leaving many fans wondering whether the game is thriving or floundering."
I say neither. I'd say it's maintaining, which is quite a feat, these days.
Kinda bugs me how everything has to be an astronomical success, or a dismal failure, these days. Just because our computers have to see things in binary, doesn't mean we have to.
Rift had a really good launch, population dropped a significant bit from there, and now it seems to be stable where it's at, maybe losing a bit here and there. Either way, they still have a sub base well over what they need to produce revenue. That's something not alot of MMO's can claim, these days.
2.1 million is just registered not actual users, i am 1 of them register with a number and everything, yet i have never played the game, just registered and im sure there are tons of people that did the same, so 2.1 million means nothing for playerbase.
Originally posted by Anthur Originally posted by Treekodar So, how many subscribers do they have?
Only Trion knows and they will never tell us. All facts I know about those accounts is, that two of them belong to me. One during beta and one trial account. And I never subscribed to Rift. And one would wonder... If they have whopping great numbers, they would be bragging and publicizing them, not being "hush-hush" about it all. Sometimes, what is not said says volumes. I also have an account number yet no subscription.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
exactly they would be too busy bragging about their sub # if its really that good. Look at warhammer, lotr, aion they stop bragging after half year and we all know how good those games are doing.
2.1 million Trion accounts does not equal 2.1 million active subs. However at launch I felt they could attain 2 million. Now I'm not so sure. While it's a great themepark mmo, I think we're all looking for something new and game changing.
It is still not bad whichever it is, gratz. But what really counts is long term subscribers, Trion will need to keep a bunch of them as well. That is really the number that is interesting here.

Number of registered accounts doesn't mean jack in a subscription game. Subscription = active subscribers. cash shop = active payers.
I am guessing that three months in it has the 2nd highest amount of NA subscribers among all MMO's. Seems pretty solid to me. Second place isnt considered a success?
Personally I hope all games that launch succeede. I am no fan of WoW but i give it great credit for attracting millions to the genre and for its success. I dont understand why people play Second Life or Entropia but I certainly hope they are doing well-itll ultimately lead to more money and more interest in the MMO genre-which is good for me as a fan of MMO's.
As for what 2.1 million accounts means i dont know-but 30k growth per week would suggest that there is still interest and momentum for Rift.

Please refer me to where you got your info that they have the 2nd highest NA subscribers, cause i havent read that anywhere. I'd also like to know where you got 30k a week since i just registered 3 weeks ago and there hasnt even been 30k new registers after me in 3 weeks.

I agree with you. It's easy to say you have 2.1 million accounts created when your handing out free trials left and right and include that into the number.
They had over a million registered accounts before the game even launched. But that didnt mean there was over a million people that bought the game. It just ment that over a million people had signed up at some point to get into the closed / open beta for the game.
It's funny how they didnt release any numbers or anything until AFTER they had started there free trial and let it cook for a month or so.

pathetic hate mongers... I'm pretty sure most of you just hate mmo's in general which is why you havn't been pleased with any mmo in 7 years.
I dont think anyone here said the game is failing. But I do think everyone agrees there is no way in h*ll that they have 2.1 million active subscriptions. Or anywhere even close to that number. Otherwise they would be bragging to high heaven about that and you wouldnt see the game for sell with a big discount and free trials all over the place.
Well i think Rift has found a stable player base and has got the players required to stay sucesfful

The stable player base exists on 2-3 servers and at 2-3 hrs a day peak time only.
Otherwise, the many many dead servers don't look like there are enough players to call Rift successfull. In fact, on many of them raids don't even happen at all and content lies untouched since release because the 2 guilds can't get the needed amount of players together.

I think you are purposely exaggerating by using the word MANY
The only true fact are due to launch demands they had to open too many servers... now they are letting others transfer off their server without losing ANYTHING and then they can close the empty servers.
So lets go with facts
5-6 servers in the US get queue times during the weekend 12+ servers will be at high on prime time during the weekends.
Everytime I have ever looked at the shard select theres enough players to make it medium on the US side... I did check the EU side and saw a couple low pops.
Every new character I have created was surrounded with other new players
So 1.3 will fix this "empty Server" problem... and when 20-25 servers are high... will people finally consider the game a success because apparently 58 servers 10 being high/full and the rest medium means it's a failure.
(58 is the number of US servers alone)

Games i've enjoyed regardless to subscription numbers
Ultima Online (2 years) Maxed at 250k subs world wide
EQ (1 year) Maxed at 500k subs
AoC - 9 Months
Darkfall - 4 Months
APB - Still playing
Rift - Since launch 2 accounts 6 month subs each
... See I actually like the genre and spend money on it.
