Naw, my geekiness would show if I mentioned that specific line was never actually said.
Back on Topic, I got to SEE first hand the original version of HJ back in 1999 before it was revealed at Simucon 99. I remember watching David show it off to me in his office.
Bah, my first Con as a GM and all I got when I went to the office was a Simutronics polo shirt -- I think I still have it, even.

Pssst. Chade. Your geekness is showing. Put that away before someone gets hurt. Back on Topic, I got to SEE first hand the original version of HJ back in 1999 before it was revealed at Simucon 99. I have a bad habit of showing up to the conventions WAY too early. I remember watching David show it off to me in his office. (It was my first convention as a GM) I got to see the character walking through the town and out to fight that critter and seeing the dragon at the end. It was cool back at that time.
If you poke around the Simucon links you can find some photos of HJ from last year. I think there are 5 of them in the simucon 2004 photo section
Hm, well, I'm a bit disappointed about the last names issue, but its understandable I guess. Maybe make it so that you register in with two names and neither can be taken by anyone else unless you share them like you can in gs? That way if you wanted to rp someone as your husband, wife, sister, brother, child, etc. you could just choose to share first, last, or both names (in the case of a child maybe) with another player, thereby replacing the names they'd chosen? ::shrugs:: Just an idea.
I do have a question though...It might be somewhere on the boards, but I haven't come across it yet. What will our clothing be like? I remember reading somewhere that we wouldnt start out in rags, but I haven't seen much else about it. Will we be able to customize to some degree? OH! Will the GMs run merchants to make custom clothing, weapons, etc. like in GS? ::begs:: I so love my alters!
Also, no talking about all the fun you've had at Simucons. I still haven't made it to one

Originally posted by Maplewood . . . -A way to communicate the various slider positions, either by assigning a number value you can see from the char. creation screen or by being able to save and email the character's appearance, then allowing the recipient to download it to his/her HJ folder and further tweak and customize the character.-Having some way to create your character *before* the game comes out. I'm sure this also helps with the game's hype, as players become attached to the character they create, but it also will let those of use who find the process as "part of the game" still get in on the rush at release.Another option would be to allow customization to continue beyond the beginning of the game, say, to a certain level. . .
If they could make the character manager into a standalone product, perhaps they could also consider a prerelease that allowed those intrested to order the game early and get started on character creation before the game opens. This might also help with beta testing before the game goes live.
I think many players would love the chance to preorder if they can reserve a name. (This doesn't have to be restricted to just the initial release either. To help facilitate such a feature, see further comments below.)
This might also help generate interest for new players too. Friends can use the character manager to create characters and gain some information about the game before they even login to create an account and start playing. This could be a handy teaching as well as marketing technique.
Another feature that might be handy. When creating a character for a game that has several different servers . . . why not list all the servers with a short description of what rules or style of game is played on each? Not only that, go a step further and inform the player which servers currently have a character with the name your trying to use and which ones don't. Of course, I am assuming players can have the same name for a character on each server.
Also, if names are unique to a server, why not allow players to reserve the use of a name on a server that will be opened at a later date? So if a name I like is being used on all servers, but I just have to have it, I can pay a small fee to be put on a reserve name list for the next new server to open.
I wonder how difficult it would be to pick a name, lets say Gandalf, and . . .
Server Frodo - A roleplaying Player vs Environment (no Character vs Character conflicts) server. etc . . . - The name Gandalf currently is NOT available. Server Sauron - A Character vs Character server etc. . . - The name Gandalf currently is NOT avaiable. Server Mordor - A no rules server, enter at your own risk! - The name Gandalf currently is available.
We apologize if the name you have selected is not available on any of the current servers. For a small fee we do provide a waiting list for players who must have a certain name, this will reserve the name for your use on a current server when it becomes available or when new servers become available.
If you would like to reserve the name "Gandalf" on any server that becomes available, you would be #53,721 on the list. There will be periodic updates letting you know where you currently are on the list, and you may remove your name for the list at any time.
Obviously there are a number of ways this could be handled, this was just a quick example. I like to think it adds a nice extra touch without to much effort and something the players would love.
.
Oh, one other thing, when it comes to colors it would be nice if there was some way to tell if you have the right color. Either a numbering or naming system, because I often have trouble matching the same color for different items.

Oh, I forgot to mention something. I keep getting side tracked, and it can take me a while to finish some posts.
I was thinking that by allowing players to reserve the use of a name for future use on a new server would provide some useful information. Not only do you get an idea of how much demand is out there for another server, but what type of servers the players want to join -- such as roleplaying servers opposed to all out Character vs Character servers.
It would be interesting to see what sort of results you got with something like this.
