Im seeing a lot of behavior to MMOs that religion and politics sees.
Game A does this and that. player group A likes the ideas. Player group B does not. Both groups argue over what should be left in and what should be removed.
Why do gamers have such a desire to change the thoughts or position of those they dont agree with?

In mmorpg terms i think it mostly stems from a lack of available choice.
What's more dislikable is the fanboy desire to control thoughts and opinions about their beloved mmo. But as you said this isn't limited to gaming but can be seen almost anywhere, religion, sport etc.
No they just watch a video on youtube of a game and then spam this website with 10 pages full of text no one wants to read about how crappy the game is.
i call this their fetish it satisfies them.
I think mmorpg creates passion and proves that people are not just a "good little consumer"
hearing like or dislike is not a problem to me as long as they argue and don't insult
Generally it is the bad critic which is comdamned. Then come the sentence : Don't Like it ? then don't play it (meaning we don't want bad critics about the game)
To have an opinion of a game you have to play it first, it is logical (like book critic, you have to read it first even we know lot don't ^^)
Then if you don't like it i think you have right to write it. Why should only people who like it write good critic ? It is like light and shadow. they go together
Its one thing to ask for a change in XP rates, economic issues, or basic gameplay features.
its another to ask for an entire re-write of an entire aspect of play. IE: Game focuses on PvP, and the masses cry foul asking pvp be removed or be moved to a minor role.
I can only speak for myself but.. It's due to the nature of MMO's Vs single player, in MMO's you meet peopl, become aquaintances or even friends so feel more invested in a game even when it doesn't live up to expectations. This makes me a little more vocal so perhaps it does for others.
A single player game i simply uninstall and move on. MMOs i find it much harder to do so. I've been playing MMO's with some of the same people for nigh on 7 years now and they are what get me into them for the most part, or at least make me want to stay. So yes, i sometimes speak up to give the input needed to improve the game. Most of the time it's ignored but sometimes it's not.
Just like in Politics, people make their opinions heard to lobby for their benefit in not only their game of choice, but the market overall. If Game Developer B sees that a game feature is popular, they're going to want to try it. So if a gamer decides he doesn't like it, he's obviously going to try to make it known that he doesn't like it so that the impression isn't that the feature is popular.
Free-for-all PvP, for example, is popular on this forum but extremely unpopular (just look at non-EvE sub numbers) in the Western region in general. FFA PvP games do awful in this market, but you wouldn't be able to tell from this forum where every member is apparantly a FFA PvP fanatic.
Your entitled to your opinion after all we still live in europe and i gues also US in freeworld with freedom of speech.
But play test before buying or when free two play test game few weeks and leave it at that. But no many keep whining for months years on end even when they still not playing anymore they should shut there mouths indeed:P
But different views and opinions on how game should be you will always have becouse we all have different taste even when we have same tats for a game we still think differently how game actually should be.
So you get endless discussions hehe.
I myself most of time wont buy games i dont like, while many buy games and then complain that game sucks lol thats sad:(
Only small percentage is true hardcore free for all fan here on forum, rest just think its cool to belong but dont wanne play it becouse its to harse hehe. So no not many are free for all fans here on forum.
3 Reasons.
1. Population: In an MMO you want a game to have a healthy robust population. Its part of what is needed to make an MMO with a vibrant dynamic community. So if the game you do like has a crappy population, but the game you don't like has a robust population, you complain.
2. IP: This is where it really comes down to lack of choice. Lets say you really really wanted to play a Star Trek MMO. The only choice you've got is STO. Let's say, hypothetically of course, you think STO sucks. So you complain.
3. Bad dynamic ruins good game. Lets say you hate instancing but there is an MMO that has a lot of features you like, your friends play, you like the lore, etc... but it is completely instanced all the way through, even common areas to the point where you it ruins a game you'd really like to be enjoying. So you complain.
All very valid.
These can validate having some complaints, but none of that validates the directed-hate/vitriol a lot of people on these boards will use when expressing their dislike.
Population: Because no one does like to feel marginalized when compared to an overall market base. But it doesn't excuse how frequently people will find whatever petty insult they can to use ranging from children, elitists, fascits, idoits, and whatever else someone thinks they'll be "internet-trendy-hipster-guy-fighting-the-man" for posting.
IP: Probably has the most wieght, but it just even further supports the "Grind my Gear:IP's" article from earlier in the week. The problems with major-IP dealings are pre-concieved notions. STO is a great example, with so many "eras of Trek", that the fan-base was pre-divided regardless of what the final product would have been.
Star Wars is another prime example- Before SWG, what SW-videogames ever had anything resembling a 'day in the life' gameplay systems? But its been one of the most vocal "Why isn't SW:TOR This" arguements since SWTORS announcement.
Dynamics?: So, the wording on this one is actually odd. Do you mean mechanics ie instancing, or social-dynamics as in how people interact with each other?
Both can have plenty of arguements for/against, but using your example, some forum-complaining is fine, but if you're going to go where the majority of your friends are de-facto, then they should be bearing 90% of the bitching-brunt, and what goes to the forums should actually be thought-out statements, and not hyperbolic-soapbox rants.
I think enough people already follow a "Don't Like / Don't Play" model with their games, but there's definitely enough people in every arguements camp that would rather impose an "I Don't Like / YOU Don't Play" standpoint.
We're all free to make our choices for ourselves(provided we're legally free/not in jail), there's no gun-to-the-head forcing you to play any specific game, genre, publisher, anything.
For-Profit companies are going to invest in for-profit projects. Small/independant companies will invest in small/independant projects. Trying to make one be the other is like getting blood from a stone.
An IRL stone mind you... no DnD stone-to-flesh spells...
Lets Push Things Forward
I knew I would live to design games at age 7, issue 5 of Nintendo Power.
Support games with subs when you believe in their potential, even in spite of their flaws.
Comparing MMO's to religion is epic fail.
Make us care MORE about our faction & world pvp!
One reason:
It's basic human nature to attempt to persuade others to your way of thinking.
Some are just better at suppressing it than others
Because its how TV has tought the masses how to think and react. Its called groupthink..pick a side...
I wish there were more gamers who enjoyed games for what they were and less gamers that hated games for what they are not.
Its been YEARS since ive been in a game that wasnt full of people bitching and complaining about something game related. Part of it is the narcissistic socitey we live in. They think "if i dont complain (throw a tantrum) the game will remain shitty (since their opinion on whats good is the final word)
The irony of these complaints, is that when they do get a game, that fufills what they want, they HATE it. Its a community that wants WoW, hates WoW, wants something diffrent and familiar, and all sorts of contridicting emotions.
Only a few games over the past decade or so that i truely didnt like, so i moved on. I found enjoyment out of a lot of "cool to hate" games. Sure i didnt stick with one game for 7 years, but thats not me...i like to change it up, and i dont get emotional when i choose to leave a game, i enjoyed my time there, which i paid for, even steven.
I guess we all need to remember that these are just games...See so many people on this forums especially, who want a game but cant find one they like....perhaps they are looking for digital entertainment to fill a void that might be better filled in the real world...these are just games, if you dont enjoy them then why stick around angry that theres not one you love?
/rant
It's more human nature to argue and force eachothers views and opinions on everyone else than games itself.
Some genres would be so lucky as to inspire such heated debates. The bad games no one cares about just fade into the background without a peep. MMOs, hate them or love them, there is usually something about a game someone hates and loves and with any luck, the best pieces will be duplicated in upcoming games.
parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.
unfortunately this has plagued this forum for years. It really took a turn for the worse.
I agree with your thread's title, If you don't like something, just don't play it. You are 100% right.
Unfortunately common sense isn't so common anymore, it's epic rare loot.
Ridiculas and contradictive statement, this is a forum for opinions, So all you want to see is positive or purely negative posts about a game?
So let get this right, you dont like people posting in your eyes crap about a game cause they should jogg on if they dont like it cause they go against other postive contributions to a game, yet you cant deal with there opinions cause they dont agree with you......hmmmmm.
Not all people want to change people views just sometimes people find it hard to articulate properly on a forum, but where u may find this , another person may find it informative, So why do u think everyone thinks like you...
You cant have a go at people for being little more passionate about there views than another maybe, and dont even tell me in life at some point you havent done this either, we all have.
I pretty much came to this realization the other day. After it seemed like Trion Worlds built Rift in such a way that sucked out just about every last bit of fun for me, I realized how unrealistic I was behaving in thinking the game would magically improve when I hit 50.
In short, I bit the bullet and decided to GBTW. Can't say I regret my decision.
Cause if we all shut up and dont tell them why their game is crap, we will keep getting crap
I have never complained on any official game forum in 8 years of playin MMORPG's. Sure I dislike some features of every game. At some point the dislikes outweight the likes and I just move on. Simple as that. I take my money elsewhere. I enjoy MMORPG's, its the only kind of games I play. But its just that, a game. I will never get so attached to a game that I cant just quit whenever I feel it doesnt bring enough enjoyment.
Also if, for whatever reason, they happen to fix what I didnt like I would then consider moving back. I have no hate for any game or gaming company. I never feel like they owe me something. I paid for a service and when they didnt deliver I stopped. Hating a company for ruining "your" game sounds unhealthy.
Just look at this forum. There will never be a game that caters to everyone.
No he didnt but this would be one outcome , it was a example, but ive edited for those with the inability to percieve this.
@ Zazz
Yes but some ppl are on a crusade against a game or company, often they dont even play said game. This we could sure do without.
I actually look at it in the reverse. Why do people constantly label every complaint or request for change as "QQ". Why do people constantly say "if you don't like it, just quit"? Which, is usually countered with "if you don't like what I have to say, ignore it" Just because someone wants something about a game changed, does not mean they don't like the game to some extent. If they truly hated it, they'd just quit without a word. Which, is not really in the best interest of the company. It leaves the company scratching it's head as to why they left and out an account/sub.
The fact that they are unhappy with something and take the time to post about it should show that they do in fact like part of the game. You have to also consider the more passionate they are about it in their post, the more they actually care. I'm not condoning depravity or constant cussing of someone or talking down to someone in general. I'm just saying, it's part of the job of the person from the company reading it to look past the emotion and try to see the issue at hand. Usually they don't, they give them infractions, and post some part of the code of conduct before ignoring what was said. In other parts of life, dealing with upset customers in text, on the phone, and face to face is part of the job.
You can't just sweep their concerns under the rug and ignore them. In other parts of life, there is better and constant competition. If most of those companies had customer service like games companies, they'd be out of business by now. It's also so very puzzling that there are so many people who jump on any player who posts a problem. Instead of explaining how something works, why their idea does not work, or asking questions about what they are saying, they jump on them with "QQ more!", "UMADBRO?", "L2P", and other insults. Doing so in a face to face meeting would end up with someone ordered to leave, a punch in the face, or other possible endings. These people are what should be getting infractions on forums. Who are they helping but themselves in some form of making themselves feel better by putting down others. Didn't we learn to get past that crap in elementary school?
In short. Grow up.
I would assume that unless the forums are in total uproar, most ppl are ok or even happy with changes made to a game. Those few that come to forums and complain, are idd whiners. Who are they that actually think the game should be change to fit them? Being constructive is one thing, just complaining is another.
