EVE Online: Dust 514 to be Exclusive PS3 Title

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

CCP has revealed that its EVE Online tie-in shooter will be a PlayStaion 3 only title. Dust 514 is anticipated to be released sometime during the summer of 2012. Developers also announced that the game will have a unique revenue system generated by in-game sales that can lead to virtual riches as well as real-world cash.

With DUST 514, EVE's starship pilots can forge alliances with DUST 514 mercenaries to engage in fierce surface firefights to conquer territories on the planets of New Eden, which are common to both games. The actions of ground troops and orbiting attack fleets are tightly interwoven, with the real time actions of players in one game directly affecting the other. A single bullet fired on the planet below can pivot the balance of power in EVE Online. Every action has consequences, and every reaction has the potential to topple empires.

In a departure from the traditional subscription or one-time purchase model, DUST 514 will be supported by revenues from the in-game sale of virtual goods, allowing players to purchase advanced weaponry, battle gear and vehicles using both earned virtual currency and real money from their PlayStation wallet.

oh man this is so wrong. they could have gained the whole eve community to play dust, now they are seeking for a new ps3 playerbase? wrong decision imo.

Cool vision if the 2 gameworlds affect each other, however. I am not a console-owner, but I like the idea here.

Very innovative idea.  I am glad stuff like this is occuring in the industry.

Though, I would really like to know why CCP is not bringing this to the PC.  I can see reasons for excluding XBOX, but from a business standpoint I can not fathom why they would leave the PC out.

Lol i love the Xbox/PC comments. When they Announced Dust 514, they clearly stated that it would be on console only and exclusive to the PS3. Its one of the reasons I went out and bought a PS3 in the first place.. Now I disagree with it not being available to PC. However, the Xbox I'm glad it's not for Xtards

This is CCP, they aren't the type to just 'Flip Off' people. But they do what they do best in preparation and time and it so happens they chose PS3 to do it first. I'm sure when their satisfied, you'll see ports. But for now, I'm happy they'll be focusing on ONE console and not all of them.

I don't know why people are freaking about this. Dust and EVE and clearly aimed at different people. Sure, certain number might play both, but by design they don't get into each other's mechanics.

Eve is 8 years old and keeping all your eggs in the same basket is very dangerous.

Putting work both in Dust and WoDO is smart, Eve is a great game but nothing lasts forever and a game like Dust might be a good way to get in some money comparibly fast.

That doesn't mean that it is a good idea to piss off the Eve players of course.

As it stands my opinion is this.

    1.  If you bought an Xbox 360 just to play this game a long ass time before it releases you're a moron for having rushed yourself.

    2.  PS3 is now fairly cheap to buy IF you must play this game

    3. If you're one of those people hung up on the PSN issues or an Xbox fanboy that refuses to play on a PS3 then shut up, you have no right to complain just because you don't like the platform.

Any real gamer has both platforms, if you want to play this game you will go buy a PS3... it's as simple as that.

As to why it's not on the PC as well... it's obvious.... the PC players would dominate due to better controls.  Won't happen.

People getting upset need to check themselves.  First, obviously the target crowd for Dust is console players.  Second, it's exclusively LAUNCHING on PS3, which allows for expansion to other consoles or PC down the road.  Third, I like how they plan to split the 2 in such a way, it makes it more "realistic".  You truly will be playing a different game but communicating with those clones flying around above.  It lends to a singular atmosphere.  Oh, and I have a PS3 and a PC so I can play the FPS and the original EVE, so...what's the problem?  I can't wait to play it, I just hope the combat and controls are as fluid as CoD.

Funny how nobody mentions that Sony cleary pays for exclusive rights to this. There is no other reason to go with the console with the smallest player base. Who cares anyways, I thought this was a mmo site.

Maybe because it interacts with the MMO in a way NEVER done before?  No other reason except maybe Microsoft wasn't willing to make changes to their Live system to accomadate this game, as they have had issues with other MMO type games in this regard.  Bah, take your negativity elsewhere.

I was actually a little excited about this title, then I saw PS3, which means owned by SONY.  Sorry, but I WILL NOT be buying anything Sony for a long time.  Not until I am fully convinced they have fixed their customer security problems . . .

Eve has passed the casual game state a long time ago, It has a great community and it is a game that doesn't require alot of skill to get anything done.  The learning curve can be HUGE for those that want to get into the deep machanics of the game and the polotics that go with that.  Adding dust to this world is a great idea and will breath some new life into Eve but the core game wont change the space gameplay at all that go with that, most won't even notice it is there unless they want to.

You people who are up in arms about it not being on the PC ... where have you been? This game was announced a couple years back as a console exclusive - the only real news is that it's now only on PS3 and not X-Box. PC was never in the mix. And this isn't going to effect EVE's playerbase or development at all. This is an FPS with some online elements thrown in that takes place in the EVE setting (on planets) - it appeals to a different crowd and I highly doubt anyone who plays EVE on a regular basis is going to stop playing it because of an FPS on a PS3. It's not like this even requires some subscription fee (to my knowledge).

Praise CCP for being innovative if anything and hope that the game is good. That give us more faith in CCP as a developer to expect their next MMO, World of Darkness, to also be good.

    Anyway. Rant over.

At least this gives me reason to dust off my PS3. Haven't had much use for it since buying the waste of space.

Summer of 2012? Yeah CCP has never been a company to get new updates or content out quickly, no suprise that dust will have been in development for forever.

Hmm, why would you introduce this on PC when you already have your cashflow coming from there?

Also, PS3 hardware specs are indeed better, and the Bluray discs simply means less discs needed to run the game.

    It's purely logistical.

Exclusive to consoles yes, exclusive for PS3 no. That news trickled in a few days ago.

Have you even been playing Eve? Have you read about DUST? Have you read about Incarna? Have you seen their updates to Eve as of recently? Do you know how many studios CCP has under its belt? IF all the answers to my questions are no, then you shouldn't have bothered typing that comment.

    This is not a game.

there's nothing innovative with making a free to play generic FPS mmo on a console.
