I just started playing the free trial. I passed the first battle and am now on the second world.
My question is, is the whole game a constant battle? Having some down-time to learn crafting, exploring the world and meeting new friends would be great.
Thanks!

You are probably in the starter area. Once you get to the end of that there is an open world you start the real game there.
There is always invasions and rifts going on. I guess it's like an on going battle.
"When it comes to GW2 any game is fair game"
Yes the game is a constant battle, but you can craft, relax, chat, etc in Meridian (defiant city) or sanctum (guardian city)
It's more accurate to say that the world is plagued by constant invasions, most of the time minor ones but some times major. In theory you can do whatever you were doing before the invasion, but unfortunately the invading force may try invading your quest hub. If not enough people are around, sometimes they succeed, creating what the game calls a foothold. That foothold in time spawns even more invading forces and so on ...
Neither are actual cities, more like little stone, overpopulated hamlets.
Yes, the "battle" is constantly - and I found it annoying after awhile myself.
It's a decent game, though.
If you stick with it for awhile you may like it.
It's not a constant battle in the same as in WAR. The starter area is a battle in the future at the end of the world pretty much. When you are sent into the past it is much quieter, yes there are rifts, world events, invasions etc... but it's an ongoing war rather than a constant battle. I suppose it's also up to you how much you take part in the war, you can just purely quest and craft in Rift. There are plenty of safe and quiet areas and time to craft and socialise.
What attracts me to the idea of Rifts/Invasions takes me back many years, when the best in online multiplayer gaming, in my world anyway, were text based games like Gemstone or Dragonrealms. The invasions there were some of the most fun I have had online, and these Rift mechanics, when staffed and guided by hands-on moderation, could be awesome. Granted I haven't seen such an event yet, and perhaps I never will, but I have played in one very fun, very massive version of the little rifts that are always popping up here and there.
I'm saying I guess that I am intrigued by the potential future development of the IP. They have crafted a very solid basis for the game, and I cannot help but think that Trion is not finished with this title.

Don't for one minute imagine that RIFT is anything approaching the best in online multiplayer gaming. Do your research... the game is for the lowest common denominator of mmorpg player and there is no challenge for any player that has played similar mmorpgs before.
What is more, you will spend time in the game to find out no skill is required inthe vast majority of the end game content, and whatever you work towards, and pay for with your $ will be given away/heavily discounted to people that came to the game a little later than you as TRION drop their draws and offer incentives, dumb down content even more etc to get some more box sales or more accounts to make it look like the game is healthy.
Caveat Emptor
'Best' is a very subjective valuation. It varies between individuals.
I play these games for the entertainment value. Period.
I work spreadsheets and data dumps all day every day for a living and when I get home I like to relax. I think there are many like me who get in the door after a hellish commute and just want to crack a beer and kick back with a well built MMO title.
For me Rift is filling the bill. I hope they will build on the solid foundation they have created.

Dude, you got it all wrong. The starter area or tutorial is the past, whereas the actual world is many years in the future.

I think if you check again you will find he was right. You are sent back in time from the starter area to alter history, and thereby avert then-impending victory of Regulos.

Everyone is right. The Guardians are sent to the past and the Defiant are sent to the future.
