LF Sandbox-type MMO (I guess)

SkittylolSkittylol Member UncommonPosts: 7

Been reading the forums for the past day or so and decided I'd like to start posting instead of lurking.  I've seen a lot of good posts on MMOs and such, but none that really hit me.  I've played many of the MMOs out there, and have yet to have any really interest me.

List of MMOs I've played for an extensive amount of time:

SWG (From release until mid-CU when they were talking about NGE, then quit)

WoW (from Beta until RIFT came out)

EVE (I haven't played for VERY long, but about 2-3 months)

DnD (I played when it was first released for about 4 months on and off while raiding in WoW)

RIFT (from beta until 1 1/2 months ago, hit cap and just got terribly bored of the grind for gear/ rep)

Most of the MMOs that were released on the first day I bought and tried out for 2-3 weeks.  Nothing has really caught my attention since SWG and WoW.  I loved SWG's pre-cu design.  Do what you want when you want, and how you want to do it.  You were never restrained to one class.  If you got bored half way into the TKM tree, drop it and pick up something else.  LOVED it.

Then I played WoW for a while.  The only thing that really stuck with me was the fluid combat.  It wasn't a press-and-wait type of game.  When you pressed the key to do damage, you did it right then and there.  Most of the games don't have that feel to them.  Don't know how to explain it, but try playing WoW then RIFT.  You can feel the difference in combat.

EVE was an amazingly large game, but everything is extremely slow paced.  Not just the leveling (skilling) but the combat as well.  Mining, combat, and whatever else you can think of...all you have to do is tab out and you're good to go for 30 seconds-2 minutes.  It's like trying to level a Ret paladin pre-bc.  It's slow and boring.  I would enjoy EVE if it weren't so slow.

DnD: I just hate clicking over and over again just to use my main attack.  Pretty much the only reason I ever really hated it.

Finally, RIFT.  The game that I was hoping would take down WoW.  Although my hopes were demolished after playing for the first 2 weeks of the game, I still played it.  I hit cap on 2 characters, and then hit the rep grind.  Taking 2+ weeks to hit the rep cap in almost any rep is a pain (that's if you do it hardcore with quests every day and then just grind the rest out until your fingers bleed).  The End-Game in RIFT is....meh.  The fights are mostly tank and spank.  There's no real mechanics to the bosses.  They are given 2-3 spells, and that's that.  Just found it more boring than fun.

I was hoping someone on these forums would have something out there for me.  Regardless of if it's F2P or P2P, I don't care.  The graphics DO need to be somewhat decent.  I can't play a 16-bit game (minecraft is the exception ^_^).  I'd like for there to be something to do at end-game.  If it's PvP, it needs to be balanced (not the RIFT-type; if you are a pyro..you auto-win the game).  If it's PvE, the fights need to be scripted.  If it's a sandbox, there really doesn't need to be anything...since it's a sandbox; you create your own shit to do.

Please, for the love of all that is a MMO...give me something good to play :D

TL;DR:  List some Decent MMOs that you play.  Doesn't matter, I'll look into it.  Just list what it's end-game is good for ^_^.

P.S. (Extra Credit!)  I also played Toontown as a kid and loved it.  Went back a few months ago to try it for the $5 month and still like it.  I just find it to be a little too kiddy.  Anyone know an alternative for it?

Just a random list of some sandboxes:

    • Mortal Online(pvp)

    • Darkfall(pvp)

    • Ryzom

    • Wurm

    • Istaria

    • Haven and hearth

    • a tale in the desert

    • xsyon

......Not all of those have the best graphics, but worth checking out anyway.

You could also check fallen earth out, it has like a 30 day trial I believe. Not a sandbox, but different then your run of the mill game.

  • SkittylolSkittylol Member UncommonPosts: 7

True true.  Thanks, I'll check those out today :D.

I think I've played Tale in the Desert when it first came out.  That's the crafting MMO where it's set in egypt right?

Check out Darkfall deffinatly, but you will be disapointed as the population is very low at the moment. As for Fallen Earth it's a great game, I've not played since 4-5 months after launch. i may go back and check it out myself depending on the population.

Honestly, give LOTRO a try.  Game is pretty solid, and if you don't care for the a la carte nature of the shop, just sub and it unlocks most everything.

  • SkittylolSkittylol Member UncommonPosts: 7

Tried LOTRO and didn't really enjoy it all that much. (only thing I liked was that you could play your own music with the instruments ^_^)

Darkfall looks interesting, mos-def.  When does the exp come out for that, though (was reading everywhere on it, and everyone says wait for the exp)?

I tried playing Fallen Earth today, but the patcher won't work.  Keeps stopping and won't finish.  Don't know why (looked everywhere and couldn't find an answer (don't have on a firewall..etc)).

Wurm was an excellent idea, but the tutorial made me loathe it lol.

    As for the rest, meh.   {mod edit}

I play Mortal Online.  Once you get over the different controls and come to accept the full loot pvp and find a guild you can call home it does wonders for the mmo-fix.

  • SkittylolSkittylol Member UncommonPosts: 7

Guess I could look into Mortal.  Looks different, which could be entertaining.

Prolly has something to do with the recent server move. I honestly suggest you keep trying. it's worth it.

Great mix of sandbox, combat, exploration, and an old-school feeling.

I used to harsh on this game a lot, till I gave it another shot a couple weeks ago. Glad I did.

I am going to give FE a try on your reccomendation. You have been harsh on the game, you've been harsh on a lot of things, and you say some off-the-wall blunt honest things at times. But you're real about it, and do not sugarcoat it to appease the masses. Says a lot, and definitely gives your opinion weight when compared to others.

wow.....thanks image   I've always believed honesty is the best policy, even if it's not well recieved. Although I can be a bit of an arse, especailly when I post drunk....hehehe.

    On topic:

Fair warning....it has kind of an old-school learning curve. A lot like SWG right before the CU, when you'd get that little green astromech that you couldn't get rid of. Give it 48 hours to get your bearings and figure out how stuff works, and I think you'll find that it's more "mmorpg" than most games we've been fed lately.

I know it might not be what you're looking for but give Gekkeiju Online a try. Admittedly, it may be an old game and the graphics somewhat dated, it is fun. Cnaracters can be customised with hundreds of different fashion-items. The game also has a reincarnation system where you can change your character class and race at any time without losing xp. The crafting system is fun too, with 13 professions to chose from.

The player base is low at the moment but from what I am aware, there are many chabges to come in the near future. Oh, and did I mention? it's totally free :)

for a pure sandbox feeling u shud try terraria or minecraft, minecraft you explore the world, build stuff. killing is entirely optional as you won't gain rly much from it, maybe some loot that you need to maybe make TnT or leather armor etc.

not to mention the endless diging for ores,

and then theres terraria which is pretty much like minecraft cept terraria is allot more action oriented and fast paced. kinda like castlevania and a minecraft mix. you explore caves and defeat enemies while ur at it, build towns, raid dungeons, explore jungles. this game too doesn't have any level mechanism in it, everything is entirely up to what kind of gear you put on, like ranger or warrior or magican or a warriormageranger hybrid.

for fast paced 2d action sandbox you shud try terraria.

for a pure sandbox feeling u shud try minecraft. both these games are B2P but they may be worth it.

Stick to Mortal Online, new expansion is approaching :) and MO got great sandbox felling, not as Minecraft, but still great.

You can try Xsyon, but I advise you to try it for month or two when they add more content or you can buy it now and support devs!
