I participated in the last round of beta and I had already forseen all the problems that made me cancelled my sub later. Yet I've bought the game hoping that things will be somewhat different after it's launched.
The game has no soul. (pun intended) Ya I know it's not trying to be different or better than major MMOs out there, even though those MMOs are released 5/6 years ago before Rift, but it gotta have something that makes me want to stay and not going back to my old MMO. I was really hoping that will be the class system. But after reaching lvl50, my hopes are shattered when only a few very specific builds are needed in most groups, 4 to be exact.
It turns out that the class system is probably worse than most f2p MMOs out there.
The game isn't bad, to say it's crap is really just a troll. It also isn't anything we havent seen before, which might be its downfall.
Rift "steals" a lot of concepts from other games, no one who's played it to at least level 30 can deny this. Thing is, they do all of the "stolen" concepts better than the originators. This might tweek a lot of folks, and that's fine. I personally went into Rift with my eyes open, I saw right away that it wasn't going to re-invent the wheel, but it was well made, pretty to look at and at least in my expeirence, the chat never had a "Barrens" feel to it.
no
Elaborate please - I am certainly finding the game way better than any other MMO on the market. The community (at least on RP PvE server Faeblight) is so much better than what I experienced on WoW that I just grin when people say "why not just play WoW?"
In Rift I can easily join a PUG via the LFG tool and have a brilliant time. In WoW, well it's all fine when its fast and nobody screws up. Any other scenario is truly disgusting to witness.
I enjoy the efforts to make exploration fun and rewarding - far more than in any other game I've tried.
I enjoy the collectibles, moreso than where I saw them in EQ.
The soul system is actually very cool: people whine about tanking being slow to level and healers hard to find. What do you know? Rift finds a pretty nifty solution. You can switch to a DPS class for faster leveling as a warrior if you wish to be a tank but not level slow. 3 of the 4 archetypes have a healing soul of some sort. I was very impressed the other night when we kept wiping at a point in the instance where was a LOT of trash mobs and you cannot separate them... a bit of thinking, a bit of build switching for the two mages we had and wallah, CC comes to the fore and we get through.
Rifts, invasions and public grouping get me away from solo questing when I want to get away from it, the rewards from this gameplay are fun, the xp comes fast.
Umm, do I have to continue? I think I have made my point far more than SuperXero89 who comes up with a SuperXero argument of "no".
I also have to smile at all the people yearning towards a "really different" MMO, calling Rift old hat, souless, copycat etc. You guys are completely deluded. SWTOR will feel like much the same old MMO gameplay - I read that the first thing you do in the Sith starter area is a go kill 10 rats quest. Even GW2 may end up feeling much the same - we wont know until we play it. I will likely enjoy both BUT when the time comes to enjoy them.
Anyway, you guys keep looking forward to the next amazing MMO release (2012? 2015?) while I actually enjoy the genre and play a well constructed MMO AND look forward to future releases.
Rift never pretended to be anything different I just view it as the take over for eq/eq2 and draws in players who like fantasy but dislike wow.
WoW = Cola
Rift = Pepsi
Personally Im looking forward to server vs server vs server rvr concept games.
Actually, their first major ad campaign--"We're Not in Azeroth Anymore." was quite precisely pretending to be different. The next expansion of WoW could just as legitmately say, and mean, the exact same thing if, for instance, it took place on another planet.
It's actually
WoW = Mountain Dew Code Red
RIFT = Mountain Dew Baja Blast.
Spec'ing properly is a gateway drug. 12 Million People have been meter spammed in heroics.

Poster 1: "This game is missing X, Y, Z things; it's good but boring. WoW had all this and more for me to do."
Fanboi poster replies: "You can't compare a game that's been out three months to one that's been out almost 10 years. You're retarded."
Poster 1: "Well, what about Rift saying "Join our Horde and the Azeroth thing? Isn't that comparing itself to WoW as a company/game? All there is to do here is raid endgame, nothing else."
Fanboi: "Stop trolling and go back to WoW."
Just makes you shake your head when you realize how the game was intentionally marketed and then to say 'give it more time'.
Ya, I did the Rift Alpha and Beta and quit playing then becasue sadly it was just a WOW clone with nothing new to offer. I got bored fast. I am so sad.

Beta here but, yah, ditto. Also in the small minority that found the graphics and artwork horrible to look at. Have friends at work that like it, to each their own.
I recently did the trial, bought the CE (on special for like $25), played for my free month, and am done...
Here's the main problem I see - nothing about the story or world really "sucked me into it". Sure the gameplay elements are all mostly re-hashes of other games that have come before... but had the story at least been really cool and sucked me in, I'd probalby still be playing it. Unfortunately after the first 4 or 5 levels, I found myself just picking up quests without reading them, using the tracker to complete them, and then turning them in to level up.
And before anybody says "you were doing it wrong then... you need to stop and smell the roses", trust me - I tried. But unless the story intrigues me, why would I bother reading the next chapter?
I'm sincerely hoping that SW:TOR will offer an intriguing story, because that's what seems to keep me interested, and that's what BioWare has historically delivered. Time will tell.
For me, Rift was ok at the start. I was in three betas and liked it. In this last 2 months the direction class development has gone in, the pvp changes and the influx of min/max powergamers (on my server at least) has just killed it.
Trion touted their soul system "build how you want" except...you can't. XYZ ain't "viable" you MUST roll YXZ!!! you nooblulz!
They left enough holes in the system to allow this behaviour. The recent pvp changes have executed certain classes to the extent they are useless now. What were they thinking? There was so much potential, so very much and it's now trickling out of Trion's grasp:(
I played the betas and thought rift was a solid yet familiar game with way to much hurry up and wait in line questing...
While the game did not grab me and say PLAY ME! it did leave a good impression of trion and its sad to hear they are taking the path of fukcom with way to late on the fly changes and flavor of the month garbage that turn fun classes into duds and anger the fanbase...
I am an extremely jaded currently ex-mmo player by admission as this genre has grown greedy, stale and uninventive it has been dominated by one game for to long and only a very few hopeful titles have any hope of bringing light to the future..
Im sick of the term "new generation" mmo when in fact the only thing new is decreased gameplay and increased eye candy with the probability you cant run it at full rez with a high end machine..
I am not too happy with the genre in itself as well. I feel this is more of the problem with what most people feel.

A HUGE disappointment to me.
