But so is Guild Wars 2, who wins?
I'll tell you who wins, we do, I'll let Bioware or A-net worry about contending, while they're doing that, I'll be trying to enjoy two good games.

Imposserbal! You can only be a fan for one game on this board! You have to feel distinct hatred for the other!
My brand new bloggity blog.
I guess no one liked me enough to send me that memo.

Well thats true, and I hope thier both good games, but gw2 is b2p so how much will the competition thing really matter to them?
They don't need to really maintain subs like swtor needs to do. They just need to put a polished game that will maintain attention for a while, then can drag people back with packs ect. If they release like half a year apart(which seem inevitable at this point), I really don't think their will be much competition between the two. B2p is just too convenient for swtor to become a liability, and vice versa.
edit: i'll bet the biggest competition is between the fans
Considering it's in the genre's best interest for all games to do well, I'd support that bet.
More to your overall point, you're right. What you just said actually makes it an even sweeter deal for those of us who don't jump to such polar extremes. One costs monthly the other does not, two for the price of one baby. A deal that good could only come from S-mart.

Does anyone here not think both games will be "good" games?
Now, both may be too similar to what is out there, but either company is not going to release a game that a lot of people won't like.
These threads are idiotic. I personally may not like the direction, and many people may agree, but there will be just as many who do like it. Look at WoW, its very clear people are into the linear gear progression gameplay.
To think that either game is going to be junk like Vanguard/AOC was at their release is living in a fanboi wet-dream.
I'm sure both games will sell more than Rift(and be more fun), and that game is pretty successful for a PC game.
Neither wins, they are aimed at differnet markets. Both the way the game plays and the genre is different. There is no competition. personally I like Sci-fi, so wll go for SWTOR, doesnt mean Guildwars is bad, I just prefer sci-fi. I think there are many people that will chose one over the other in this way. This is not competition, it is just personal preference, and the publishers do not have control over that.
Publishers have the simple job of providing what different consumer wants, If the consumer wants an awesome Guildwars, good for them. If a different consumer want an awesome Starwars, good for them, but not everyone wants the same thing so in the end everyone is happy.
I think most of the issues with the MMORPG genre comes from the fact it is still mostly subscription based.. The genre have a huge playerbase, but a lot of people won't necessarily have the money to sub to more than one game at a time. With the subs being the main income for devs companies, the war is all about the quantity of the subs..
I believe the recent changes in the mentality within the MMORPGs when it comes to incomes is a good thing.. New, creative ways of making money for the studios will probably help the community not to split between "their" games..
I, for one, am one of those who don't necessarily have 30-45 $ to throw in subscriptions each month.. I prefer playing them one at a time.. But it's mostly a financial choice.. I'd gladly take more games like GW2 who take a different approach..
As for the OP, I'm pretty sure both games will be good, but for the reason above, I think GW2 will have less issues keeping its playerbase together, but it won't necessarily be because the game is better.. So, with this in mind, I don't think the two games should be compared too much when the "who won" discussions will start...
You would think people would think in such a way, but at times it doesn't appear that they do. I for one think these games will be fun, they don't have to be great, yet people seem to expect a product that lives up to hype. I mean, sure the PR says our game is so great, so does Tony's Frosted Flakes, should I go rage because they're not the bestest cereal ever? Of course not.
PR and community hype are things no product will ever completely live up to, it's impossible, people look for the bad. If you're looking for it, you're going to find it, it's really that simple.
I agree threads like this are idiotic, I just hope you realize I made this as basically a parody of such threads, there is a point to it however. Sometimes things like the above simply have to be said, whether it looks to be obvious or not, people let the polarizations go to their head and forget what this is all about.

As has already been said, B2P pretty much means that GW2 and any of its competitors can live in harmony. As long as GW2 and SWTOR don't release too close together (and are good games) I plan on picking both up. Deal breaker for me is I have been playing WoW on and off, so SWTOR has to be able to convince me to drop my sub for WoW because I won't pay two subs, especially if I have the potential to be playing 3 games. MMOs are time sinks enough as is, hence the benefit of GW2 being B2P; I'm don't feel like I am losing/wasting money on a game I am not currently playing. I feel like GW2 has the advantage in this regard. SWTOR has to convince people to buy into a sub fee, GW2 does not. But as to the OP and whether they can coexist? I don't see why not.
