When I first heard Old Republic was being made I thought: sci-fi MMO based on Star Wars, hmm I hope they're smart enough to realise that they can't just import a sword and sorcery template to sci-fi combat. In other words, if characters are standing around taking blaster bolts to the face, whilst action bar cool down timers refresh to gradually whittle away at NPC health bars, it will ruin the credibility of the world you're supposed to be immersed in. And all the while Bioware insisted no no no combat is going to be different and dynamic and there's going to be cover and lightsabre blocking and it will all be seamless and combat will 'feel adventurous' and Star Wars-y. And, what do I see from ALL the gameplay videos? People largely standing about taking blaster bolts to the face (with the odd, seemingly unnecessary, duck behind a personal force field) clumsily waiting for action bar timers to refresh, whittling away at NPC health bars. I'm going into suspended animation for five years, wake me if something new and interesting comes along in the meantime.
This.
I gotta agree I'm pretty disappointed after seeing the battle videos. I hope it DOES NOT feel like what I'm thinking now when I get to play the game.
Yeah... same. Now I really want to get into CB just to test the combat with my own hands.
I'm curious how it feels.
i am soooo buying the game. probably preorder! hm,.. only problem is... i want colectors edition! lol! so maybe ill have to wait =
anyway! the videos look so amazing! comparing graphics from 2 year old betas and from now. its sooo much more polished. very much improved! and the fact they are not runing demos anymore of the game and are in fact using the servers in beta? amazing. cuz now every1 can say "ok, this is beta but its the live game" not the 1g demos of a closed area or whatever. i saw e3 closely. i read mmorpg.com forums everyday! watched the videos, reviews, and more reviews, screen shots. etc etc lol im soo adicted to gaming. anyways. overall i see this becoming one of the most played mmo ever! it combines perfectly the ammount of necessary depth in game. humor! or did any1 miss the fact that a imperial killed the entire squadron for his birthday? lol go search it.. its there! i laught so hard at that. kudos bioware! the environment is hugggeeeee for you wowfan boys is about azeroth x12! and i was a wow fan for 5 years... cata ruined it for me... cleared the entire content in ... what? 2 months tops? lol... what a joke... didnt even bother for hc raids ...
anyways.. as i was saying! i think every1 will have a blast. and about the... well.. that! players taking blasts in the face... have you seen high level combat?! YOU CANT DO THAT! youll die for sure! yes u can get a blast direct in the eyes but eventually the content will be too hard for you to avoid hiding etc.
my opinion is.. go read the important posters... not just some idiot that fancies critics.. get real. there are some vids of high lvls on internet and showing that hidding etc is the way! without that they ware dead in seconds...
omgomgomgomg xD i could write all day but i dont want too!
the game will be a huge success! there are ofcourse some wowfans calling it a wowclone. but its nothing like a wow clone
Wow, awesome journalism! Let's not say why they were disappointed or how many you asked, let's just say it was a total letdown, who cares really? This site has been negative about SWTOR since it was announced, your personal views are not important only the facts are. If you claim that it was such a letdown for so many E3 visitors state facts, your opinion news disgust me.
He never said -HE- was dissapointed, only that he was surprised at the amount of gamers who felt let-down by E3's coverage.
Reading Comprehension 101.
So what? It is useless "information" without any facts or anything valueable, there is no point in mentioning it other then to bash the game. He doesn't say why they were dissappointed or what Bioware could do different.
I know a lot of gamers who think MMORPG.com sucks and it is surprising how many people feel that way. Cwutididthere?
This game has been hyped for years, yeah YEARS people are tired of hearing hype. They want to get their hands on it, and they want to know when that will be.
As far as I agree with the third part of your comment, saying that comparing combat systems is offensive is simply wrong.
What people expect from games is immerse experience and innovations. With all the next gen, innovative MMOs announced BioWare is simply making fun of themselves giving us a WoW clone with low-end graphics and terribly stiff, clunky combat system. This is NOT how a game released in 2011 OR LATER should look, so comparing the combat systems is more than appropriate, given that people would expect something more dynamic than smacking each other with glowing PVC pipes like old people, occasionally kicking someone in the face.
You can't blame them for expecting dynamic combat after The Force Unleashed or Jedi Academy. People want control over their lightsabers. If I was to play a jedi/sith character, I would love to be able to decide when to block, when to hit. Directional swings and such. In my opinion they should try going for GW2 playstyle rather than old KotOR.
To sum things up - this game was outdated two years ago with the in-game footage in terms of both combat system, game engine and graphics. What's left then? Lore? It's just fine, no fireworks. But I am sure that BioWare is damn well aware of fact, that it doesn't matter how bad the game will be, because there will be people playing it just because it's Star Wars. You had few vows like that in this comment section.
I'll just chime in to state that I'm not a raiding fan and am fervently hoping they don't take the wow approach, that being that all there really is to do in the end-game is raid. If I want to raid, I'll go play wow, which has six years of experience making high quality raids. I'll be out of the game real quick if it's raid-oriented.

well in regards to that, at the moment all we can go on is this comment from the CM made earlier today:
And where is the revelation to the "hints" that Mr Reid gave to the community regarding some type of rewarding endgame playstyle to those who don'tcannot raid at endgame?
I take it this statement no longer holds true? Or never WAS true to begin with?
I guess, apparently the devs who like RPG's (Erickson, Ohlen) have been overruled by MMO raider devs like Schubert and Amatangelo? Developers who just don't get where MMO's are eed to evolve too?
Thanks for the comments. Let me address this one directly:

We haven't spoken about all aspects of the 'end game' yet. When we're ready to talk about it, we'll talk about it.
In case you're wondering, BTW, we have a very tightly integrated development team who come to decisions together. While I sort of like the idea of a cage match in which Erickson and Ohlen face off vs Schubert and Amatangelo for the fate of The Old Republic, it just doesn't work that way.
now what that might be or if it will even be worth while has yet to be seen
Not the best read I ever had mostly just recaped everything we have seen already without offering any great insight or oppinions. Lot of cool quotes in the comments it's nice to see how passinoate on either side people are about the game.
Im only interested to see the launch date. Everything else is un-nessecery junk. Dont need to know every single feat in the game prelaunch, im interested in finding out along the run.
The speeders look stupid IMO. No one in the universe would design a speeder that required you to take such and uncomfortable position to drive it. Hanging off the back, half crouched, while you crawl along at a modest pace. It's like a speeder designed to be horrible.
I see the cinematic trailer as a letdown, its like they didnt really put much effort into it, half of the trailer was old material..all this time and they cant be bothered to do a properly put together new one? and still no actual release date, not much information that i thought was generally usefull or new, half of the information given could easily have been guessed at or imagined. No i dont agree that there was a lot of new info, or effort..just more of the same stuff..im eagerly awaiting the game..but im sick of the game theyre playing.

The Origin trailer was a composite of the 3 available CG trailers, 2 of which were revealed earlier.
However, the 3rd one was really a completely new one, here you can find it in full:
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
I was never really into SW universe or sci-fi games but...speaking just from combat appeal point of view GW2 definitly has the upper hand. Watched many vids for TOR and GW2 for melee and ranged and tbh i like GW2 a lot better.
Now if roles were to switch... if TOR had GW2 combat and GW2 had TOR combat i would gladly pick TOR then due to combat but it is not the case.
I guess i also like the looks of GW2 more. It has this nice atmosphere to it, grand scale etc.
Hopefully both games will succeed. No reason to hate either game. Would be best if players of both got what they wanted.

I can get a great story from a book, I need to see fun challenging combat first.
