AC questions

I am a long time player of Asheron's Call, and it is really my favorite mmorpg of all time. I was just wondering why it didn't take off like a few other games of the time. It seems like more people from these forums tried older games like ultima online and everquest, but not asheron's call. So here are my questions to those who never liked it or never tried it.

When Asheron's Call first came out, did you try to learn about it?

Did you hear about Asheron's Call long after it came out, and never really bothered with it?

Did you hear anything bad about the game? Anything good?

Why did you never try the game? Bad word of mouth? No friends were playing it? Too busy with other games or things at the time?

Would you be willing to try the game now? Why or why not?

As a long time fan of the best game that ever came out...(That is...Asherons Call 1image)

I believe it was because of poor marketing. No one knew about it. I never even heard about it from other sites. Of course you'd have fansites for it like those at warcry, or the ACvault. But other then that. You never saw any marketing for it.

It was a small niche game that had a medium sized loyal following. It was made by a noname newbie company at the time, published by another company that didn't really care to maket it.

But personally...Now that I think about it. I'm glad the game didn't take off. The close knit community of a couple hundred players per server really is what made the game so much fun.

I have to agree with Finwe on this one. I'm not exactly an old school MMO player but I have been around them for 5... er 6 years or so and I can really count the amount of people I've met that played AC1 or 2 ? on one hand and throughout all these years I've never really seen advertising or anything regarding the game that would grab my attention.

Pity because looking  back on it now, it seems the people that have played it seemed to enjoy themselves.

Most EQ'ers I knew heard about it but since it was "Microsoft" most people figured it would suck or be too family oriented. Although Microsoft does make good games they are mostly the epitome of non violent confrontation.

The microsoft name didn't stop Age of Empires from being a radically successful game.

The biggest problem is it isn't in stores and barely ever was. Think how many years AC1 has been off shelves now? It's been at least 2 if not 3 years. You can only buy it online. Plus even before AC:DM came out, it was barely available. Microsoft did a real crummy job of producing and distributing it.

It's sad to say but they really should have adopted the Sony method of sucking customers dry with expansions. But no Turbine is far too nice and adds tons of content monthly that are equal to what Sony charges for in expansions. If only the poor EQ'ers had seen the light ::::30::
