General: E3 2011: END Games Meeting

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

During this year's E3 convention, MMORPG.com's Richard Cox had the opportunity for a face-to-face chat with END Games developers to talk about Vorp!, the company's Facebook MOBA. Richard went in a skeptic and came out...well, you'll simply have to read it for yourself. Let us know what you're thinking in the comments below.

First off the drawing board was Vorp! I was pretty skeptical at first, because it’s being called a Facebook by most folks out there, and well, I can’t think of much I’d like to do less with my time than play games on Facebook. I hate having to constantly bug my friends so I can play my game. But Vorp! is different. Sure, you play it on Facebook, but it’s a full-fledged multiplayer online game. And it’s built on the Unity engine, so it could easily be ported over to just run in Chrome like a lot of social games are doing lately, or any other browser based solution. They also mentioned the possibility of taking it to tablets down the road as well.

"Rather than spending four to five years behind closed doors working on a game that may or may not do well, they’ll release a fun small game, which if people like, could very possibly grow into something resembling an MMO. I could see the general idea of Vorp! as an MMO."

This is a great and smart approch they are taking with thier games and hopefully other companies will do the same instead of big gambles we have see in the past.

I think thats the very opposite of what people expect from MMOs in general.   Most people nowadays are expecting an entire virtual world complete with many multiples of hours of gameplay including crafting etc.

I think its fine for a MOG though,  and if they build on it even better.  If its a facebook only thing though, I'll be passing simply because I own a facebook account that I haven't logged into in years.  YEARS.  Unless the genre is strictly headed towards facebook I don't see that changing anytime soon for me.

However, the popularity of facebook might actually do them some good.

It's a shame there are a lot of people sitting with fingers crossed that they would do a newer version of Jumpgate , you know Jumpgate but called GateJump with factions like Soltar, Quantrain and Oct... ah damn that didnt work.

But hay you get the idea, look UT did it, CS did it COD did it MW did it, so come on guys, dont let your fans down, get your fingers out your asses and finish making jumpgate, I dont care if you call it poopgate jumprerpants as longas under the hood its the game we all want.

This isnt exactly a "New Age" way of thinking.

Most companies do Prototyping for games where they make small games to test gameplay, these guys just decided to Market their prototypes...

I think they are taking a smart apporach to making a game then seeing if it is sucessful instead of spending years working on a game and a year later it goes down the toliet

    Me too.

I would have loved it if you guys managed to get guys from the major mmo's in the same room to speak on the state of The Grind. Obviously none would speak specifically about what they have planned but it would be nice to know how many more times my awesome gear becomes shit on 1-3y cycles =P.

Inhouse prototyping is one thing and having a working game open to the public is another. The former you are still making a gamble(just a smarter one) and the latter you will know what your audience wants as you get to hear all their feedback.

You mean like Auto Assault did?

I have a lot of respect for the ex-NetDevil guys.  They were doing some interesting stuff.  They'd survived for something like 12 years as an indie studio before they got bought up and the new owners ran the studio into the ground.  Going to keep an eye on ENDGames.  At least they seem to release products.
