I also disagree. Great graphics, great community, a few different semi-innovative things (especially the Ryzom Ring coming up) but all-in-all nothing to brag home about. Alot of it is just to go out and kill mobs over and over, just like every other MMORPG...except the quest system in Ryzom isnt as great. Not any worse the other MMORPG's, but not really anything better than other MMORPG's.
It does rock in some aspect, and not rock on other.
You win some you lose some.
There's still the Grind, as it were.
Not sure how any mmorpg can get away from the grind. How can it be implement it so that you don't finish the game in 50 hours and move on to another, short of having a highly active event staffs.
But the community more than make up for the Grind. If you open yourself up to the other common activies of mmorpg, that is, rp'ing and player events, then it certainly do f'in rocks, as you say.

I bet you hated World of Warcraft to death. I could go off much more on that comment but i'll leave it alone. XD
Moving on.
I do think Ryzom's a fantastic game. Very new, very innovative. Especially once you leave noob island. But I would disagree as far as "F'in rocks" is concerned, Because it does have its flaws. For one...
Actually, now that im sitting here trying to think of something I don't like about Ryzom I'm truly at a loss. Nevermind.
This is CreativeName's fancy schmancy sig. Let the 'ooh'ing and 'ahh'ing commence... Now.

Eh! If I didnt play the game but speak french and understand the devs much better, does this count?
(Just teasing and joking, want to put some smiles and make folks reacts, dont take me seriously, cant bear aging in RL, even less in a game, end of topic hehe, nothing serious there, just an irrationnal hatred hehe)

I guess there are many who has played this game and don't think it f'in rocks.
There are some issues that are simply wrong currently: solo gets progressively harder at higher levels compared to teaming, there is not many great quests, server population is quite often bit low, lacking music, Nevrax has made lots of mistakes and has not been able to meet promises earlier and there are some balancement issues.
There are also some design choices that some like but some others hate: non-instantiated realistical world, graphical style, loot system based on crafting materials, basically all items are player crafted, unique scfi/fantasy setting (e.g. no mythical monsters), event based storylines, every character can learn every skill in game eventually, customizable actions, difficulty setting...
Then there are features that cannot but loved: weather, seasons, rich animal behaviour, rich foraging and crafting, 3d sounds, cool graphical effects, very good customer support, good exploration factor and mature, helpful and RP friendly community...
Of course, after you are exposed to these features, it is easy to see that they could be even better. Also, some features are not apparent at first glance if you judge this game based on your experiences of your first mmorpg.
It is upto each individual to determine if the good outweights the bad and if game with such design choices right for him. If you love those features that are done right, agree with design choices and believe that bad things will be eventually improved or does not matter to you, this game F'IN ROCKS!
Every game has a potential to be something better but will it ever be? I tried this game for 1.5 weeks before finally giving up. While this game has a lot to offer, it doesn't outweight the mindless grind from level 1. While other games try to mask the grind, TSoR just presents it how it is without a cover up. Whoever said it's very innovative, it hardly is. Most of the "innovative" stuff has been implemented before in other games.

I played it for 10 months and I wouldn't say it "f'in rocks". There is no doubt it has some amazing things in it. The game world is incredible, the crafting and skill systems are good, and exploration is fun. There are also some major problem. Things like the lack of a decent mission system.
It requires a paradigm shift in playstyle to one found more commonly in Pen and Paper and LARP games. Some people seem to be incapable of making this shift and many of the things those people consider negatives are actually the big positives of the game.
Damn good game overall.... the community is phenominal. And... if everything that is supposedly coming in the next couple of months comes in smooth ... "F'n rocks" will be a complete understatement.
Been playing since release... to address that as well
Played for 6 months, basically right after the game went retail. After the initial enthusiasm about discovering how the game worked, I found there was nothing else. Nice people, but boring game. The major reason I subscribed in the first place was their description of a living, dynamic world that you could affect with your actions. This was the crux of their marketing message around the time the game went to retail. And it never was true! Nothing you did had any lasting impact. Kill a mob and it respawned right away, etc.
It isn't at the point where you wish it, but I think it's still more "living" then say, Guildwars, or World of Wraft, or EQ2.
e.g. There's the season, there's the weather, there's the day and night. There's the herbivore and carnivore interaction, there's the migration and mobs movement, there's the tribes. There's no loot but quartering animal parts, there's the inquisit herbivores and hunting carnivores.
The psuedo-livingness is there, it's just not complete. They didn't take it to the final level.
The mobs run around a bit, true. There is the carnivore-herbivore thing, but notice how static it really is: the herbivores don't run away from the carnivores, they just re-spawn and are attacked again. I haven't seen any lasting migrations; the mobs move to one area, then a few minutes later they move back, and go back and forth. The tribes just stand there in their turf, for the most part. I guess I just don't see it as you do.
I know exactly what you mean, and exactly what you're looking for (I think). I went into the game expecting the same, but it's not quite.
What is there though, is impressive enough for me prefer it over others (tried fighting RYL or EQ2 and GW mobs and you will see what I mean).
I dunno, here's hoping that oneday, technology will be awesome enough to provide the kind of "living world" we want, but right now, I don't think it can. Heck, even stand-alone titles don't have this kind of AI and mobs behavior.
(agree though that it's sorta bad to set the players up so high in expectation with their advertisment and then delivering something not quite as described. They set the expectation meter too high.)
You and I mostly agree, I think, vqly. One of the best features of SoR was and is it's community, really good people. We can even disagree at times without flaming each other .

I disagree. I found it boring and thats basicly it. Nice graphics and effects though.
I love Ryzom, I can't see myself playing another MMO while Ryzom is still here currently. I've played about a year since ob1 now and I am not bored.
However, its not for everyone, yet it is for me.
I disagree theres nothing but grind, there is plenty to do, but it doesnt appeal to all.
Outposts and Ryzom ring should help its case, this game has the potential to be much bigger than it is.
