LF MMO w/ Flying

NirwylNirwyl Member Posts: 103

I have trouble enjoying any MMO if I can't eventually fly in it. Ever since World of Warcraft introduced it, it's always been one of my favorite activities. But, I really am tired of WoW. One of the reasons being that it is so difficult as a solo player to get any of the cooler looking drake/proto-drake/ect flying mounts. I just don't like how hard it is to get them.

I've tried many other MMOs, too many to list here. I'm really just looking for information on games YOU think are good, that also have flying. There are several big name games out there that I know have flying, but I'd really like the opinion of people here before I go try them all.

Not really looking to find a F2P game, but will try it if there are some good recommendations here.

I'm an avid f2per myself so I can only talk about f2p games, but I do recommend these ones.

Perfect World has flying, including flying combat. Elves can fly at level 1, other races have to wait till level 30, and there are cash shop "flyers" that look cooler / fly faster. Each race flys using different things. The game itself is a grinder and relies on instances for leveling in higher levels

Mabinogi has flying mounts, which are cash shop items and cost like... $8 at the cheapest. There's a new (flying) dragon pet coming out soon that's expected to be like $15. Flying is only a means of transportation though, and doesn't work in some maps. The game itself is a unique sandbox game with no classes, only skills.

DOMO (Dream of Mirror Online) has flying; if I remember correctly you can fly on any weapon. But you can only land in certain zones. It's a grinder with a unique class system, but I believe it has a fairly low playerbase.

Also, I believe that EQ2 has recently gotten flying mounts; I haven't played it myself so I can't recommend it but it's a fairly high rated game.

EQ2's flying mounts are enjoyable and very well-animated, although you won't see them until endgame. The height ceiling in older zones is also a bit painful, and you don't have the benefit of seamless travel as you get in WoW, so it might come across as disruptive depending on your tastes.

Aion has flying, but it's limited by a flight timer and can only be used in specific sections of specific zones, excluding the Abyss (which is free-flight, but still limits you by the timer). The fact that you fly with your own wings as opposed to a mount is a nice change of pace, though. Gliding is also possible in all zones, and while it's not quite flying, it's a feature I've grown really attached to and miss in other games. Essentially you can jump off of a cliff, pop your wings, and glide around or down towards your destination, regardless of whether your area permits actual flight or not.

City of Heroes/Villains, Champions Online, and DC Universe all offer flight but it's not really much fun to explore a concrete jungle in my opinion.

Last thing that comes to mind is Anarchy Online which has flying vehicles and, if you play either an adventurer or meta-physicist, a bird polymorph / flight spell, but it's an older game and as such has a very different play style than you might be used to. Still, I really enjoy AO's world design and it lends itself well to aerial exploration. I'd suggest waiting on the new engine first, though...assuming it ever happens.

That's about all I can think of from the top of my head.
