im thinking of playing this

Hello Everyone, i was looking for a good mmorpg after playen many others, and i was looking at the screen shots for this and it looks pretty fun. but i have some questions about it. Is the gameplay like BF1942? Is it like Planetside where you gain ranks to be able to aquire new vechies and such? thanks for anyone who responds

First off it is like BF1942 in the time sense.  The gameplay and mechanics are in depth.  BF1942 is a fragfest where WW 2 Online is more of a thinking mans game (one with quick reflexes and the ability to magically guess range and nail you from a klick away image

The learning curve is steep but I definitely recommend it if you like FPS games with depth.  You start off able to pilot and use a basic set of weapons but after gaining a certain amount of rank (corporal I think) most of the equipment is opened up to you.  That being said you have to play within the restrictions of attrition.  You take a tank out and get it blown up...guess what, no one can use that tank until it is resupplied (3 hours I think) or someone goes to a town behind the frontlines and brings a new one up.  So limited amount of stuff means you don't always get what you want.

There is also regular training held on the training server (check the website for times) and if you join the game and start asking questions most of the community was pretty friendly asking my newbie questions.

This is about all I can think of for now.  I have not been subscribed to this game for quite a while (work commitments and playing too many games) but I do have a multitude of fond memories.

P.S. If you do not work well in teams and if you are too proud to take direction, I suggest looking elsewhere.  You MUST work together to do much of anything in this game.

I would like to add that this game is definitely more of a simulation than an arcade style shoot-em up.

For example, i play infantry almost exclusively, and i have to aim down your iron sights to shoot at your target, no cross hairs at all. Also, i cannot bionic bunny hop all over the place, instead, i have to constantly move from cover to cover, stopping to assess my environment, look for the slightest movement or sounds of footsteps in order to stay alive.

Combat is brutal, most of the time you wont even see your enemy, one well-placed placed round is all it takes to kill. This type of gameplay will not appeal to everyone, but for those of us who have grown to love it, nothing even comes close. image

well if its that real i think im obligated to give it a go.. most games are more of a "oh 30 rounds in you but you can still do back flips" kinda play but if its like what you say, i think im gonna like it. thanks for responding btwimage

I believe there re-releasing it as Beyond Blitzkrieg, or Beyond battlefield europe I think. There going to have a huge patch that will add many new improvements for the game. Like bridage spawning for example to increase teamwork. I would reconmened wating for the re relase because chances are they'll have a free trial. But its up to you, it is a great game IMO.

If you have an account you will get BE upgrade as a d/l. The box may have a map and some other stuff but no need to wait. Buy the CD key code and d/l 1.18 now and start to play. You can also beta test BE. Some of these threads have links to videos that are a little out of date but give some idea of the in depth gameplay that is ww2ol.

Don't expect anything like BF. (for me WWII-OL is waaay better)

As an infantryman you will not be able to pickup a vehicle and drive it.  You will have to spawn the vehicle.  An infantryman CAN take a ride with almost any vehicle though. Or you can multicrew the vehicles, again only at the moment of spawn.

Also driving vehicles is much more simlike than in BF.  But try the gunsights on those tanks and panzers and you'll see that they are much more fun to drive.  Turning engine on/off is not mindless micromanagement without a use btw.  If you shut down engines you'll be able to hear the enemy approaching while your concealment to the enemy will improve as well.

Theres a handy guide at www.firingsquad.com I can recommend.

    Good luck & have fun!

    It's a great game.

As infantry you have to guestimate how far the enemy is and adjust your rifle sites so you can get off an accurate shot. Weapons have a really realistic feel to them.

Team play is a must and WW2OL has the friendliest community I've ever come across. When I first joined up last september I was surprised at how almost every player I came across in the game wanted to help me. A few different players took me under their wing for a couple of hours to show me the ropes and then had me go on an attack with them. When I became use to the game I did the same.

In most FPS games I play I start to get bored if I haven't seen an enemy or killed one in 30 seconds. In WW2OL I've laid down in long grass 2kms out from a town my side was defending and laid there for a couple of hours while I did nothing but report enemy movements. I didn't find it boring in the least.

is it a persistent world? and what's death like? where do you respawn and how long does it take? any penalties?

  • DrakolusDrakolus Member UncommonPosts: 134

It is a persistent world in as much the map is contested until one side wins the campaign.  I think its on campaign 17 meaning that 16 previous maps have been conquered by one side or the other.  You respawn in a variety of places (airfields for planes, ports for ships, barracks/firebases/control points for infantry and vehicles.)  Death is usually along the lines of *bang!* screen goes red and you hit the esc key.  Choose your respawn point, choose what you wish to respawn as (that is available and you have the rank for) and voila...load up, keep your head down and shoot some axis scum!  (I played the frenchies since the allied side was undermanned when I was in the game).  The only penalties that I can think of is travel time if you have to respawn somewhere far back, the loss of that particular piece of equipment for your side (attrition), and knowing that somewhere there is an opposing player saying "yeah! I just pwn'd that dude.  Or due to WW 2 Online's more mature fan base...Jolly good show!  I do believe I got one...PWNAGE!)

Hope this helped at least a bit

P.S. Sorry couldn't help myself...been hearing the kiddies too much in WoW lately

-yes,  a one single server persistant world. Western Europe modelled in 1:2 scale. More than 500 cities. No zones! View distance of several kilometers. Cities can be captured. If your side captures all enemy cities Your side wins!

-if You get killed You can respawn immediately. No personal penalty, but no mission success points either. There is a penalty for Your side though: Every vehicle in game is limited in number and every vehicle that gets destroyed is gone for 4 hours until it is replaced.  So it does matter if You win a fight or loose it. If You successfully destroy enemy vehicles or loose own ones! Every enemy vehicle You destroy weakens the enemies possibility to defend his cities or to attack Your cities! Every vehicle You loose weakens Your possibilities to defend against an enemy attack or to successfully finish an attack on an enemy city. Teamwork, tactics and cooperation is essentiel as well.

You can not only fight but also make career in the player-run High Command organizations leading units in the field, organise bigger scale operations and play armchair general.

Yes, as long as the campaign lasts it is persistent. If you die during a mission you get no xp at all, and that is pretty much your penalty (and the fact that you have to get into battle again, because as you die you loose the situational awareness you had at that point, and by the time you get back to the same point, things could have changed a lot.). To gain xp you have to last longer than 10 minutes (it's harder than it sounds) on your mission, AND return to base alive.

Spawning into the game is a matter of finding where the missions are, and setting off from there. These missions are posted by players with enough rank. You can either spawn in at a FB (Fire-base, forward-base or field base - all the same thing, just has many names) wich is set outside of the towns and is closer to the enemy town, or you can spawn in a Town itself. Within the towns there are ususally a number of places you can spawn from, but the armybase is the only spawn that allows both inf and vehicles, as the other spawn points only allows you to spawn infantry, or......

...cities with airfields allow you to spawn in as aircraft, and very few of them have the added ability to allow you to spawn in as a paratrooper to get a transport plane into the battle, or ...

... if a player has started a mission, and selects to be an opel/laffly/bedford driver and the player manages to get the truck into a a position (cant remember the exact rules, I think it is a min of 400m and a max of 1000m from target), that player can deploy the truck as a MS (Mobile Spawn). This will allow any players to spawn in at this position for as long as the mission lasts (missions have timers) or until the MS is destroyed.

I am a bit drunk at the moment, and if that confuses you, I apologise, but I think that is pretty much it.

Here is a updated map of the game world.  From these pasted jpgs (updated every 5 minutes) you can watch the progress of each army as it moves through northern europe.

http://wwiionline_pics.home.comcast.net/Gamemap.html  Use the IE scroll bars to view the whole map.

One thing that I like about this game, there is only 1 server.  There for, all WWIIOL players play on the same battlefront.

It is worthy to note that those towns are actualy quite far apart in many cases. This is a half scale battlefield of Europe. Farking HUGE!

Another good map/general info site is at http://www.okw-ressourcen.com/

Their current map (http://www.okw-ressourcen.com/current_map.html) shows the supply lines to all the towns but otherwise is the same as the previously posted map. There is alot of good stuff on there though. Have a look around.

Current map is over 28.000 square kilometer and as of today does it hold 480 villages, towns including a good number of major cities like Antwerp Liege, Luxemburg. The map stretches from Düsseldorf and Köln in east to Dieppe and Hastings in the west. In norht-south direction is the map stretching from Metz and Verdon in northen France up to the southern parts of Holland. Den Haag is so far holding only a dock, but it is said that the towns up to Arnhem will be added during this year.

Also, all bridges can be blow up, as well as they can be repaired again. Not only does this give a good strategical layer for the game, since a number of villages, towns and many major cities is divided by a river will it also give the local brigades some tactical issues to consider.

Also, you can enter all buildings, and all buildings take damage from heavy fire. After some time will the buildings turn to ruins and rubble. ::::19::

You can't really get a good feeling for what WW2OL is like just from words, but if I had to compare it to anything:

Imagine standing naked in the snow, hitting yourself on the head with a hammer, whilst simultaneously tearing $20 bills in half.

After a while you won't notice the pain anymore .... you might even occasionally enjoy yourself for 5 minutes or so. That's the best thing I can say about it as a day 1 player.

1.19 was almost the last nail in the coffin.

The sooner they get rid of 'hacks' like Hatch, Doc and Mo and actually spend some money on people who know how to code ... well, lets just say its well overdue.
