It might be too early but this feels like one of those pivital moments similar to the NGE, except we get it in PDF form months or maybe a year in advance instead of two weeks after the latest release.
Could this be a schism in the making?

I'm not sure what you mean.
Incarna is going to be a dividing line?
I don't really believe that.
The eve veterans subforum is mostly hosted on failheap-challenge.com. I don't think mmorpg.com is welcoming of another swg-alike subforum.
That said, this does feel like the shitstorm to end all shitstorms, and I've seen many in my life.
yup.
This is very big. As in, mmo history made big. SWG Nge is a good example. But depending on what is said, how it is said and who says it. CCP could stand to lose more than just subs. The whole defining culture of EvE online was it's connection between community and CCP/Devs. The concept that CCP has a bond and/or trust with its player base, is/was paramount and a defining foundation by which the "big guns" could learn from. A true indie success story based on the respect both given and recieved. This is not Soe nested with several working IP's (at the time of SWG Nge), with hundreds of thousands of players. This is one company, with grass roots, working on the dev of two incomplete possible futures, relying on one IP to sustain thier existence in the current and next possible future.
All one has to do is go to the Eve forums and read the 75+ pages (as of this post) in less than 4 hours of very angry, very upset and betrayed felt subscribers. NOT specific to CQ's, or monicles, or station/sytem lag, cpu/gpu overheating and all the other less driving anger bits.. but more specific the "leaked" comments from a pdf/newsletter/ect. that suggest just how little certain lead devs feel about the community that supports thier interest and the possible fleecing of said support.
I realize that Penn and couple other internal staffers are trying to initiate some damage control. But at this point .. they need to let aware the community they are reading and understand the communities anger.. and just shut... up. At this point and time, the only person that will make the waters calm will be none other than Hilmir or of that caliber.
As a long time player and supporter of Eve I am very upset about the decsisions made with the last update. MT is a slippery slope no matter how you look at it.. as far as I am concerened. I can honestly say "in my opinion", this is as close as a company like CCP can get to spiraling out of control. They need to be honest and lose the spin.
going to be interesting to see what happens in the next couple of days.

Overview of the whole forum, as of the time of this post.
Average posting length of the rage threads is hovering around 1.15k characters. Unusually wordy even by Eve standards. //edith: typo

Does anyone mind explaining to me what exactly is going down? Because from the way you guys are speaking it seemsl ike the shitstorms rolling in. Im actually actively subbed to eve but it seems ive been in a hole (i dont log on more than 2-3 days a week to do my level 4's while waiting for my mission runner to advance her skills and playing ffxi in the meantime).
CCP is planning to introduce pay-to-win microtransactions, as detailed in a leaked internal newsletter, while they were publicly denying this would ever happen.
(Then again, they publicly stated that they'd never do microtransactions ever a year ago)
Essentially, after the shit that was happening since dominion, they've lost not only all credibility, but have been outed as liars.
Read this fearless newsletter for a good laugh / cry.
heyo..
and when done with that.. the damage control vs mob thread

Thanks for all the help explaining.
As big as this is, I thought everyone would know what was going on but a lot of players probably visit the forums once a month, or less.
I'm actually a big fan of the idea of walking around in stations and some of the other changes. But using it as a lever to pry pay-to-win "micro" transactions into a game that has been a player run economy since its inception is very ... Smedley ...
I think it's a bit unfair to say with certainty that letter means anymore than they say it does. Besides where was all of this outarage a year ago when in a blog they basically said what would be happening now, just about everything in that blog has came to pass.
"Fearless is one of our company values. It‘s also the name of an internal newsletter that has been designed and developed specifically to catalyze discussions on controversial topics. One of the biggest elephants in the room these days, not just for EVE but for the gaming industry as a whole, is virtual goods sales and microtransactions.
Therefore we dedicated an entire issue to exactly that topic. It‘s worth mentioning that the topic of the issue was "Greed is good?" as a way to ask a question that would then be debated back and forth and often exaggerated purposefully to draw contrasts and make points. The result of that is now widely available on the internet.
The opinions and views expressed in Fearless are just that; opinions and views. They are not CCP policy nor are they a reliable source of CCP views as a company. The employees who submitted articles to that newsletter did exactly what they were asked to do, write about theories and opinions from an exaggerated stand."

No, it just means i do not believe in their public damage control and will instead use more reliable sources for information. CCP is not a hivemind you know?
I haven't played yet but was actually downloading it now and found out about this. So have micro's trans. been added with Incarna? Please advise as I simply don't plat Freemium games.
What more reliable source are you referring to?

You can now buy clothing and other vanity items through the Noble Exchange implemented with the most recent expansion, Incarna. The game is not "Freemium" as there is still a monthly fee. The items are optional and can be bought with a meta-currency called Aurum.

O, wow....such a small step needed now from clothes to bigger guns! Hmmmm........
It's not like I'm not under NDA either, but I've read it carefully and the stuff I do know now doesn't fall under it anyways. //edith: that sounds like I was an employee. I wasn't. Just someone wanting to help some time ago..
Hate to see a company I loved go batshit insane, especially since some people I really like work there. :-|
Tney said this was because they don't want to raise sub price and thats bull. They pull in over 6.7m us green back each month.
Cool, it might sound like I am defending CCP, I'm really not, with so much heated debate going on lots of things are being said that are not 100% accurate.
As an example the quote I used about MT in EVE from Nov '10. I found by googling MT in EVE. Simply because people were saying they said a year ago EVE would never have MT.
You also showed what they actually said, which wasn't a statement that there will never be MT in EVE, instead they had no plans at the time. Which could either be a lie, or misinformation internally. That's the problem with taking forum comments to heart though.
Another example is the info I gave above, people saying the newsletter is what they plan for EVE, yet that's not how CCP describes the letter.
Personally I'm not vested in EVE so I have no emotional reaction to this.

Yeah as I've been watching this brew especially over the last couple of week and culminating in today it's felt like watching a huge natural disaster happening in slow motion. Whether you think peple are overreacting, the leaked docs are real or fake, or what you believe the truth is, there is no denying that this is a huge event at the very least for EVE Online, if not the MMOG genre as a whole.
