once greatest sandbox game SWG shutting down... its author mentions ArcheAge

wizyywizyy Member UncommonPosts: 629

Raph Koster, MMORPG guru and author of Star Wars Galaxies... (which, before it was completely ruined in 2005. was the greatest game on any system I have ever played) mentions ArcheAge (among two others) - sandbox games which will continue to bring us what we need in MMO games:

"Instead, I’ll note that sandbox, worldy MMOs do not seem to have gone away despite the economic currents that run against them. It’s too big a dream, I suspect, and games like Arche Age, which isn’t out yet, Wurm which is, and of course EVE, show that there is a passionate audience for the sort of experience that lets you step into a more fully realized world and live there."

http://www.raphkoster.com/2011/06/24/swg-is-shutting-down/

If Mr. Raph recognized ArcheAge's potential even at this beta stage, I am even more optimistic :)

P.S.

Sandbox games may be even more prominent in the future, according to - ehm, "Mr. Truthful" himself, John Smedley of SOE - in his interview on Massively:

"So you don't think that sandboxes (and sandbox systems) are dead for SOE? Will you ever make a new sandbox with SWG's pioneering features?

The answer is... stay tuned on the subject of sandboxes. We're super excited about the future of sandbox gaming. Let me just leave it at that!"

This isn't swg2.  Glad to see you are interested in this game for the unique features it has to offer.

Lol of course it isn't swg 2, but it has SANDBOX features and that's the reason for my post.

Is this a hint on eq3? Or are there other MMOs currently under development at SOE that could fit here?

Possibly EQ3. There are also reports SOE and CCP are in talks for SOE to become a large shareholder of CCP. CCP has denied they are being 'bought out' by SOE but haven't denied SOE may become a major shareholder (even majority shareholder).

Smedley and SOE are well aware of the mistake they made by splitting EQ players into I and II. It's unlikely they will fracture the players for a third version.

The new MMO will be based on a different IP.

not really. Smedley confirmed already that they are working on EQ3 and said, that it will be more close to EQ1 than EQ2. but i doubt it will become a sandbox.

Seriously dude, I don't see why your being so aggressive towards the OP.

@OP, thanks for sharing this mate. I hope that it will be a good sandbox game.

90% of eq/eq2 players do not play neither eq nor eq2 now, as both games are _old_ now. I guess, they try to bring those gamers back. We will see, if SOE is still capable of creating great games...

eq is old and eq2 just sucked, i really did try to like eq2 but aside from its nice graphics (for the time) it really was a shallow playing experience, SWG another subpar mmo was at least unique and offfered some real sandbox features, but the game felt like any other mmo with a badly plastered on starwars lisence that managed to capture absolutely none of the excitmeent from the movies. Also hindered by SOE swg really was a disapointment, even all the screenshots before the game launched had a much better feel and looked way better, once the game launched it was suprising just how bad the graphics looked even at release.

The only 2 successful mmo sandboxes have been UO and EVE. whilst i am indeed exciting about archeage i am certainly not holding my breath. Since no new real attempt has been made to progress its combat system from that which was introduced with eq1, and we all no combat is what 90% of people time in an mmo is being spent doing even in a sandbox, esepcially the fact that archeage could still turn out to be a grinder of an mmo.

there are 2 types of mmo, imitators and innovaters.

What splintered the playerbase was the word "Two". Not because it was called Everquest. Usually "two" or any ascending number in titles denotes an attempt to advance the previous game through increased gameplay, mechanics, storylines, etc.

It won't be based on a new IP, you're reading it wrong. Read the wikipedia article. :)
