VG? Vanguard? Calling Wurm "that good" is a stretch. But then again, it is the most eve-ish of most mmos, but much more on players shaping the world, especially in the literal sense. Or to put it that way: Wurm isn't a great mmo. It is definitely deserving of my money though, because I am confident that the Dev(s) will use my money to make the game better, and it does satisfy some of my needs. I now live on top of a mountain with a twisted path leading to the sea, overlooking most of the server, growing potatoes in my garden (and in the game). I built a small settlement and I'm slowly terraforming the surrounding land.
So CCP wants to charge a subscription, and have a micro-transaction store to add conveniences. They want to add customization features like special clothing, customized ship designs/skins (and custom more powerful ships), the ability to purchase instant skills and reputation. This all at a very high, and very absurd, pricing model. To quote the CCP CEO in a recent letter to his employees "I can tell you that this is one of the moments where we look at what our players do and less of what they say." So I have canceled my three accounts. One of which has been active since 2004.
I know I am not alone.
Where will I go? Thankfully my corp. is active in multiple games, not just MMOs. They were the most active in EVE Online to be sure, but not as of this last patch. It was not a discussed mutual agreement, nearly everyone was simply so disgusted after reading CCP's internal Fearless newsletter and the CEOs internal e-mail sent to all employees recently that we simply canceled and started into the other games.
Goodbye CCP, since you are obviously convinced this is the route to go and refuse to change direction I can just as surely say I wont be back.
Where will you go? Is there another game world out there?
I never got into EVE, but I followed this game because I like what it stands/stood for = freedom. At least that's my understanding of why EVE players were so committed to this game.
I am really interested to see how this turns out because I think there is a potential for any mass exodus of EVE players to have a serious impact on all MMOs now and in the future - especially if whole corps leave, especially if they stay together.
EVE players, if you leave, where will you go now?
I will most likely quit mmorpg's altogether.
I have been through DAoC ToA-NF, and SWG-CU-NGE, and going through EVE Incarna will be most likely the nail on the coffin for mmorpg's for me.
Perhaps I will go back to Ryzom, but the English community is pretty limited there ( small ), so I don't know how that will work out.
Perpetuum is another option, but I didn't really got into it yet.
For now, I will stick to some good RTS or Turnbased strategy games.
Still have a load of offline games that I want to try or revisit

So not interested in the why of people threatening to leave EVE (in this thread), but only where will they go. What will be the result of the current controversy -- in the immediate future and in future?
They will stay right where they are, in EVE, after they realize that everything is perfectly fine. I don't know of any similar experience type of game out there. So those who leave EVE may end up in console or single player game land maybe, but in terms of MMOs, I can't see where there would be a good 'fall back' option for former players.
The point is, that CCP is changing the foundations of EVE, slowly but steadily, EVE won't be the similar experience anymore post Incarna.
You can see it on everything they are doing :
- Adding vanity microtransactions
- Forcing Incarna - Captains Quarters ( instead of simply keeping the station hangar and adding a disembark option )
- Planning for adding gameplay altering microtransactions ( standings, ships, the works )
- Dumbing down missions ( they could have streamlined it, but they gutted it )
- Removing learning skills ( debatable good or bad, but still catering to the masses )
- Making DUST exclusively for playstation ( not on PC, where their loyal playerbase resides ), interconnect it with EVE and make it completely microtransaction based
CCP wants to go for the masses and give up everything they have for it ( that includes the loyal veterans ).
I remember 2 other companies that did this : Sony Online Entertainment and Lucas Arts with the CU and NGE in Star Wars Galaxies.
We all know what happened to SWG, they are closing down the servers permanently on December.

Nowhere is safe from a company eventually introducing a cash shop. Leave EVE, go where? Black Prophecy? Hello micro transactions. Might as well dig out an old copy of Frontier or Elite. Those were the days, they should so MMO that one, but cash shop less, a euro or dollar a month sub instead, they would still make cash.

VG = Vanguard, sorry 'bout that
that's interesting what you said about terraforming though, i was convinced only Xsyon had that implementation in their game. i checked out Wurm at one point a while back, but was really undecided about it. maybe i'll check it out again.
i heard there was a free trial or f2p server, would you have any personal experience with the f2p server? just curious as to a personal opinion on it.

You may enjoy Vendetta Online, at least until some of the steam vents. They say it's similar to both games you just mentioned, no micro-transactions either.

there is a thread on there official forums that is asking people to show that they suspended there accounts. as of i believe this morning 1570 some odd people have canceled over 3600 accounts if i remember correctly. that is ruffly $54,000 a month loss in revenue per month.
I'll probably stay until the day they start charging for things like skill remaps and gold missiles. Perhaps by then I'll try the new star wars game or guild wars 2 - who knows I might just quit gaming altogether since many of todays games are being dumbed down so much they they bore me, with the exception of niche games like Europa Universalis and it's ilk.
I left EVE after 3 years in game (E Vile) because of needing a "in game day job" from full loss mixed with how expensive decent ships were. I was tired of flying the same crap in PVP because I didn't have the time to afford loosing the high end ships me being a 3 year old player could actually fly.
My post EVE life I tried a few MMOs but seem to keep returning to Age of Conan. AoC is about to take some good steps in the right direction.
They are releasing a FRESH START "hardcore" PVP server with new ruleset. You can't transfer toons to that server. EVERYONE starts new.
Conan is also going "freemium", and the cash shop has NOTHING of a combat advantage. At most some potions to help leveling up, but leveling to 80 (max) is NOT a grind. Anyone who wants to be competitive at max level PVP will need to subscribe. The free deal is basically a extended trial, so don't be turned off thinking AoC is going FTP. It's far from that, and in my opinion a good "middle ground" I can accept.
The new hardcore server you only get 1 character on, and you need to be subscribed. No freebie time there.
With the new Conan movie coming, they are making some decent additions with areas in the movie.
Conan is the only MMO I found that doesn't feel like a kids game. PVP and combat are a riot along with VERY nice graphics for those shiny high end PC's
It's not the sanbox as much as EVE, BUT you can make guild cities. You can take over Battlekeeps in the open world like taking player stations in EVE. The new hardcore server is going to be a chaotic fun time. Funcom has been going in the right direction for some time since being back.
EVE players might also have fun in Star Trek. That game has improved a ton. It almost feels like EVE light to me because no full loss, and it is not a FPS style. It feels like EVE controls but you can keymap turning. They add tons of content from the times I played. I still play it when I feel the space urge. STO is not nearly as bad as this site makes it look. They are also making big PVP and ground game changes there something to check out.

I played AOC for a few monthse but im more of a hardcore crafting person and those "cities" you can build are just pre-set set in stone designs I wish they would of done something more like shadowbane city building.
currently waiting for SWTOR or TSW for some good story telling or good crafting.
If I had to guess, I would say that some players who are quitting over this may try out Perpetuum or Fallen Earth. Both games have similar systems and have some sandbox play. I still don't think there will be a mass exodus, but I think depending on what happens with RMT, quite a few players could leave. I personally don't give two craps about some monocle for sale, but I sure as hell don't want standings or ships being sold for real cash.
well being as i know a few people who quit eve to play perpetuam they enjoyed it for awhile but now much of them have quit because of there not being enough islands. I never played it myself because it was so much like eve except on land in mechs and there was a lot less to do
Are people really leaving.. i don't see it so far as the numbers last night were the same as always.. to me it sounds like the only people actually saying these things, are those who don't actually play... thats not to say that there isnt a lot of discussion in game about the whole T-shirt, Monocle thing.. mostly over the ridiculous pricing model.. but as thats all there is, its something that only really appeals to those daft enough to buy them... if the other issues ever become something other than just gossip from an email.. or whatever.. then that would be the time to become concerned.. as it stands, all i see is gossip and people trying to stir up trouble.

Until i see some kind of corroboration from within the game.. its just hearsay.. and im just not seeing it. its not like the game has millions of players (350k active subs last time i checked) so any kind of mass protest etc.. would be instantly noticeable.. and so far.. yup you guessed it.. zero.. thats not to say that there isnt a lot of complaints about the cost of these vanity items.. or about the whole Aur thing in general.. which i don't actually like.. but Aur seems to be aimed at the Dust514 thing.. which im going to totally ignore.. but only because its for the PS3 only. .. which imo.. is a wasted opportunity.. but that just means that PI will be avoided.. i already anticipate that DUST will be a failure.. . Eve however.. will... i have no doubt.. carry on regardless...
With 350,000 subs dropping 3,600 is a mere 1%. You wouldn't be able to notice it. The margin of error just for day to day fluctuation of usage is greater. They'd have to drop 10 times that many to make even a small dent.

i stopped subbing to eve, I had cut my time between mortal online and eve (eve was like the game i played when bored, since you could just skill up offline)
I just stick with mortal online, it having some hiccups due to its latest expansion by a small niche group but its got a dynamic breeding system related to the horse system, and a task system like Eve online, its pretty much eve online all over again but with hardcore medievil mechinics and great communication from the devs, makes me stay even if the game is buggy after a patch >.<
because we all love micheal jackson also the mmorpg.com forums for mortal online is occupied by mostly people who hate the game with a passion and like to talk quite abit smack about the game when its not true, and they base their lies on more lies ><

Probably back to WoW until TOR.
Sad, but there it is. There's nothing else worth playing, and WoW can be fun in short bursts.
RIFT was a *crushing* disappointment; a shallow, loveless, generic MMO the likes of which hasn't been seen in a P2P format since, well, forever.
Eagerly awaiting: World of Darkness, ArcheAge.

Incarna is cute...
Its meaningless fluff.
As long as CCP keeps adding to the space game ill keep revisiting it.
If they decided to completely screw the game at least i got near four years out of it.
