If Sony really is buying out CCP. It will have profound implications. Eve has already lost some of its player base to its current new additions. I am wondering if you think the sony ccp buyout is really going to happen? What is your view of this?

I think that makes a scary kind of sense after Smedley's remarks about sandbox games.
Must be stupid joke. CCP would fall that low
How were you reading it, when the link doesn't work and gives a 403 forbidden message?
Also, it was an old april fool's joke from back in 2004 that Sony was buying CCP.
absolutely 0 sources are confirming this.
Could also explain why dust only get released on the PS3...or because it hard to implement on the XboX with makes more sense, but less fun for the conspiracy :P
I dunno, I read it fine about 5 minutes ago, though it took ages for it to load.
well lets just watch what happens my fellow anonymous.
Well lol first we get the announcement there is going to be store items now this. The store items were confirmed, but wow I just cant believe Sonny has the cash to buy out ccp. I read the link took a while to load, its so totally unbelievable.
I want to see some sources or other information to back this joke up. Considering SOE just shut down two games, I just cant see them having the cash.
Well the quote from SOE about Sandbox games and the fact that its seems with the implementation of the Nex shop in EvE, CCP are looking to raise capital, so this could be true, we shall see.
Cal.
This doom and gloom thread was brought to you by Chin Up the new ultra high caffeine soft drink for gamers who just need that boost of happiness after a long forum session.
Couldn't find the quote earlier but this "leak" puts Smeds comments in a whole new light
So you don't think that sandboxes (and sandbox systems) are dead for SOE? Will you ever make a new sandbox with SWG's pioneering features?
The answer is... stay tuned on the subject of sandboxes. We're super excited about the future of sandbox gaming. Let me just leave it at that!
It's going to be a fun summer to speculate and watch the rage over the speculation. I think I may need to buy some stock in a popcorn company.
Loaded fine for me, also look at the URL its a 6/26/2011 article. Honestly it wouldnt surprise me considering the direction CCP has been going. Well, I'll just take another studio off of my "trusted" list then...
There's not really enough information in the article to speculate. It just say they're in talks. One would have to wonder, if the article is true; who initiated those talks, CCP or Sony?
if it were true, oh the cruel irony! I left SOE, eventually finding a home in EvE, only to be returned to the arms of SOE :P
Still, timing is great as it certainly becomes believable with all that is going on/being said or not said, by both companies. I hope it isn't true, but the moment we get a TCG lottery in EvE, I'll know what's up.

the Xbox is actually easier to develop for than the PS3.. a lot of the complaints levelled about game play issues on the PS3 is because of the complexity of making it work.. it was one of the factors that made the PS3 version of Black Ops not as good as either the Xbox or PC version.. and buggier.. when it was announced that Dust 514 would be PS3 only.. the scuttlebut was that Sony had bought the exclusive on it, paying off CCP to ensure it was on the PS3 and not on the Xbox.... i reallly wonder if Sony can buy out CCP though.. Sony has been reported as having lost money steadily for the last 3 years, even assuming CCP were willing to sell themselves to Sony.. could they afford to? i think the most likely answer is that Sony has bought the rights to Dust 514.. Eve after all is something that is way beyond the capability of the PS3.. but Dust 514 might be a game that helps bring Sony some degree of financial security again.. or at least.. im guessing that is their reasoning.. SOE doesnt currently have any MMO worthy of the name on its books - DCUO crashed and burned.. and the rest are ageing badly... and with Planetside Next not on the horizon any time soon (if it ever was.....) they are probably thinking that an FPS MMO like Dust 514 is going to give them that AAA title again... it may be in Sony' best interest.. but im not sure its in CCP's though.. given the negative association inherent in any kind of link with Sony.
SOE and Sony are also two different companies right? If sony was to buy the company would not directly mean that this is about SOE. In fact would it not be more logical that "Sony Computer Entertainment" will take control of the game studio as it is after all creating more then just MMO's.
Perhaps you need to know what SOE actually stands for
The link doesn't load. Any other source?
My understanding, and anyone feel free to correct me as it has been a while since I followed this, is that SCE basically owns SOE. I can't imagine an online game would not be placed within the SOE portfolio. Additionally, I can't imagine them not trying to use EvE as a lure for their Station Pass (if it is still available/around) thus increasing exposure for their other games.
Naturally, we are headed further and further down Speculation Lane. There are still questions about the authenticity and scope of the "talks" so I imagine that'd need to be sorted out before getting too bogged down in semantics.

works fine for me, using Mozilla. May be your bvrowser or settings
Ah yes, it works now.
There is really no evidence that CCP was payed off by Sony Games Division which is an entirely different and not related in any way besides the name Sony to Sony Online Entertainment. Sony Games focuses soley on consoles games and has devs like Sony Santa Monica that worked on the faboulous God of War series. I don't see any involment from SOE since they do not own CCP or CCP's IPs. Sony seems to only be working with them.
Most likely what happened is Microsoft wanted CCP to charge money for the online features, Microsoft has been doing this for many things such as Vavlve who typically release all their DLC for free, but Microsoft allows them only to release one free one on X-box live, so knowing Microsoft, they wanted to charge money for it. Not going to say this is true because I have no actual evidence, only circumstancial but it's a possibility. I don't see why Sony would pay CCP off for exclusivity, considering just this year 2011, Sony has 10 or so exclusives comign out, another isn't going to make a difference only cause compitition with their own IP's. Still it's a possbility.
Seems a few people are having issues getting it to load, so here is the text of the article (minus some commentary from a blog at the bottom):
We’ve recieved the following inside information by a CCP source who has asked to remain anonymous:
SONY and CCP are in talks of having SONY become a major partner, or even a controlling partner, in CCP, via stock acquisition. There is mounting evidence of various operations of the companies becoming closer in nature, function and style. With the recnt closure (24/6) of Star Wars Galaxies, the failed SOE SCI-FI flagship MMO, it may be the case that SOE is looking to acquire a stake in a leading Sci-Fi MMO.
EVE News is closely monitoring the matter and will update as more details emerge. Stay tuned…
While CCP continues to keep players in the dark and ignore their questions other players announce their department from EVE Online.

Now even seem they seemed to have released plants v zombies for the PS. I figured that DUST would not be a good fit for SOE portfolio, I however stand corrected.
Eve is my favourite game.. but.. if acquired by Sony.. i would terminate my account.. which i've held since feb 2004 .. in a nanosecond... so i really hope its not true.. because i don't think im the only one who would do this.
I have to pinch myself to make sure I'm not dreaming...
