City of Heroes: June Producer Letter

Now that the announcement has come down on "Freedom", read the first Producer letter since the massive announcement rocked the game. The letter touches on Freedom and why it came about, Issue 21: Convergence and why they believe it's going to be their best one yet.

From the beginning, our primary goal has always been to add more value for our subscribers. All of you who have been playing our game for any part of the past seven years are the cornerstone of our success, and we have always wanted to devote our resources to ensuring that you were not just treated well, but treated like VIPs. City of Heroes Freedom will indeed draw loads of new players in and give everyone alternate ways to experience the game, but we know that the relationship we have with our loyal community is the most important aspect of our game. We want new and experienced players alike to immediately see how much value there is in a VIP subscription to City of Heroes Freedom. We want to deliver more content, new features, and even better rewards for your loyalty, and yes, to bring in more people to play your favorite super-powered MMO.

I'm actually pretty excited for this. So many games are prettier but a VERY few have ever kept me coming back for more, and CoX is one of them. The new content makes me want to make a new character, as I shall since Time Manipulation is being added as well. But the game could definitely use some new blood, and going f2p will help that along while people who were paying subs anyway will get even more for their money on top of what we already had.

Such a good move, and with the disillusionment of DCUO and Champs, there's probably no better time to grab the people that want their hero fix.

Atlas Park and Galaxy City are getting significant makeovers apparently (well, GC is getting destroyed....)

Perhaps it's down to CoH being my first MMO but your post pretty much sums up how i also feel. The game kept me entertained for many years when it was released and even now 7 years later i still find myself resubbing for a couple of months here and there, having fun each time. No other game has been able to to do that.

The one thing i have missed for quite some time is playing with new players from the very early levels right through to max level and multiple alts, nowadays it's mostly long term vets who don't have that contagious aura of wonder about them anymore. New players helped keep the game fresh for me long after it should have gotten stale.

Once it goes F2P I'll plop down a sub and delve back in again along with a few people i've known from other games as this F2P move has given them the shove to try the game when they otherwise wouldn't before, especially after CO and DCU experiences.

For a game as old as it is it has a bright future ahead of it with F2P.
