How is this game?

Recently I'm reading the novel "Conan the Barbarian" from Robert Howard. I find it good. My brother has told me that Age of Conan is a game about this book. So I'm considering if I should have a try. Could anyone here tell me, how is this game? Should I try it?

It's going free to play later this summer, If I were you I'd save your money and wait. But, I'll say it now, I just dont want you to spend your money on the game since it's going free. It's an amazing game. I absolutely love it to death.

The price is a formality. For about 10$ you can get the box with a free month. In addition, there's still the unlimited free trial, which means you can play until level 20 with no time limitation.

It's a very impressive PVE themepark kind of game.

It's the best Conan game to be had, no question about that.

Actually...I think if you sub now and create classes you like, you can use them when it goes f2p. If you wait, I think you will be restricted to only 4 classes to choose from. I may be wrong, but I think I read something like that.

If you shop real hard you can find the game cheap (I picked mine up for $2.50).

Just like a lot of P2p > F2p if you've ever had an account you'll be a premium player.  Won't get any more zones but you'll have all the classes unlocked when it kicks over (one I read about was the Ranger.  F2p players won't be able to start one, but since I had an account with a Ranger I'd get to keep playing him.).

I'd have to say the game is 'loosely' based on REH's books.  While you can pick out parts of the books, you'll find they're in some strange arrangements at times, but hey, all is good.

Combat takes a bit to get used to as it's different than alot of other games.  Also look long and hard at the computer requirements for the game vs your computer's spec's.  For what ever reason AoC is a monster that you need a good computer to run it on.

I'd recommend going to 'canyourunit.com' and have it do a check.  I use the site all the time to see how my computer will handle a game.  Saved me some bucks in the long run I can tell you.

Good - Sweet music score if the pieces are a bit short.  Gorgeous views.  Interesting quest write up's (even if some are still Kill X number) the banter back and forth you can do with the NPC's is fun.

Bad - Need a good computer to get everything out of the game.  Not as solo friendly as a lot of games out there (Good&Bad item).  Won't be able to totally level in your races zones.  Will have to visit the other races area's as well.

Both the starter zone (Tortage) and the beginner zones got quest upgrades a bit back so there's plenty to do although you'll soon tap them out.

Thanks for all the replies~ I think I'll wait till F2P. Then I'll have a try this game. I've played not many MMOGs, just only WoW, DDO, Uncharted Water Online and some webgames. Now I'm bored of WoW, so I have to try another game. Thanks again.

  • The main reason you want to wait until F2P is to check if your computer can handle this game.

I often find myself stopping whatever I am doing to Alt-Z and take screenshots simply because it is gorgeous. The artists have outdone themselves on textures and scenery.

I'd recommend a decent NVIDIA card.

The pvp is difficult to learn because you have an insane amount of control over your characters, especially any melee class. Once you understand the mechanics of battles though, it is like watching art unravel before your eyes. I've never seen combat this intense in any other MMO.

I can't say anything about the pve aspect of the game. I only log in to chop off heads.

    TLDR:

    Pros: world pvp, graphics, gameplay

Cons: investment in an NVIDIA card

Unless somethings changed Tortage the starter island is F2p right now.

They call it their Forever Free level 1 - 20 (although you can really make it to lvl 23 or 24 by doing all the quests).  You won't be able to leave Tortage but it'll a) let you try out all the classes, b) see if your computer can handle it. and c) give you a leg up when the begineer zones go free.

No real reason to wait plus it's a big download so you might as well go for it Free right now.

Yes the free starter area ( Tortage ) is the way to check this game out. FtP might not arrive till August but the demo has enough content to keep you occupied almost that long if you don't play 24 / 7 lol! It's a lot of content playing up to lvl 20, and you can try out as many different characters as you want. By the time FtP goes live you could have one or more characters leveled up.

But unlike the demo, FtP is restricted to which characters you can play and how many character slots you are allowed. 2 slots and about 3 characters. But not just any characters ; specific FtP characters. I know Barbarian is one, not sure which the others are.

  • F2P is restricted to 4 classes.

    They are:

Guardian, Barbarian, Demonologist, Priest of Mitra.

You are correct in that you can only play 2 characters in F2P. They are also either the easiest or more traditional to play from each 'archetype'.

The other mages/priests/tanks/rogues are hybrid classes or require more micro management and therefore might not be newbie friendly.

For example, a bear shaman is a priest/healer who is also a melee class. Some heals require you clobber your target for them to 'proc' while other heals also play a dual role in buffing your dps.

A Herald of Xotli is a fire mage who is melee. Yes, you breathe fire onto their faces, but first you must be up close and personal. A good amount of their damage is 2-handed sword based.

A dark templar is a tank who requires one to self heal or sequence the right 'save my own fuck'n life' abilities all the time.

When Conan says hybrid, they really mean hybrid. All the time- not just spec choice.

The only 'more traditional' role they did not pick is the assassin (or the ranger), but they can be very unforgiving if the player isn't taking movement into consideration as their primary skill. At beginner levels, I cannot imagine playing a ranger without constantly switching to 1-hander and shield - at least until you get proper traps.

If the Tortage trial is still free to play, go that route!

    How is this game? excellent.

As previous post explained, funcom gives and generus trail period ---> up to 20 levels :P, not many game do that, and the restrictions are minimal, for example you can't whisper anyone if they don't whisper you first (p2p player) don't know if that has changed but was like that when i did the trial. Anyhow hope you will 'n'joy the game because i know i do :)

I would suggest buying the expansion off of Amazon for like $8.00 ( I did this recently). This includes a free month of gametime if you are a new player, plus it will give you access to all of the new races and lands when the game goes f2p. If you don't buy it, you will not be able to play these races/lands unless you buy the expansion later on. May as well get it now and make your characters before the game goes f2p, so you will have access to them once it does.

    Currently Playing: DAOC Uthgard

Previously Played: UO, DAOC, Shadowbane, AC2, SWG, Horizons, COX, WOW, EQ2, LOTRO, AOC, WAR, Vanguard, Rift, SWTOR, ESO, GW2.

I didn't realize that you were only allowed 2 characters in the free Tortage trial. I thought you had access to all characters and races except the race that came with the expansion. I played it many moons ago and I recall being able to select any race or class and being able to take them all the way to lvl 20, with no limit on how many characters you can play. Maybe Funcom changed it around since I played it. Or maybe I am misremembering what was available, that's possible!

Oops, I meant the upcoming F2P/hybrid.

Yes, the Tortage trial will let you try ALL the classes.

    Corrected my original post ^^
