Hi im having some trouble deciding on what to make my character
my original plan was to have several characters all supporting eachother with proffesions, but recently ive come into a problem when it comes to engineering
i intend to make my main character a Night Elf Rogue but i don't know what profession to have, i badly want engineering but my friend tells me having a night elf rogue with engineering is stupid because there is a lack of resources and they don't get +15 skill
please help me make up my mind what to do, i wish i could do alchemy and engineering with a gathering

i've heard some people say that the +15 skill means that they can go to lvl 315?
Since it is much easier to change professions than to reroll a character, I would suggest focusing on what type of character you like best. If you are fond of Night Elves, then by all means choose that.
ok, i geuss i will do engineering because you can buy potions, i might start with alchemy though till i get to a place with good resources. grrr that +15 still bugs me
thanx for your help
Also, this may help with your decision - engineering is considered the "fun" skill, very helpful with PvP and not so much a money-making skill.
If your going to have several character's anyway, You might wanna pickup Herbalism on this one, with our without alchemy. I have frequenty seen rogues looking to buy some herbs that they need for poison, and it might save you some trouble. That, and Alchemy is one of the strongest skills if your looking to buff your character. Free action pots and agi. potions work well with rogue.
Engineering is defintely "fun" profession. As omeone said, its not a money making profession, so dont expect to be rich out of it, in fact, you will be poorer unless u grind a lot of ore and stones. The upside is that you have an extra edge in PvP, shrink ray, protection belt (forgot exact names) the one that casts a shield on you, or if it malfunctions, it puts you out of this world into another dimension, you cant move or attacj but others cant do that either. Gnomengineering has many of those ..."malfunctions"... Funny thing was when i was running away from a mob (sprint did not recycle yet) and i used my boots and they malfunctioned... oh boy i was running around randomly like crazy! that mob hardly hit me because I think it was as much confused as I was! LOL that was so much fun. Best malfunctions are boots, deathray, shrink ray and that belt.
PS: regarding that extra 15 skill, it may not be usefull at the beginning, but it may be usefull at higher levels. Like im sure there are or will be recepies that require skill above the regular, and only peple with that extra 15 skills may be able to learn it. Otherwise its pretty useless to have that, dontcha think?
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

Basic Uses of the professions
Alchemy-Good for making yourself better/stronger. You can also make alot of money off of some of the end game potions/transmutes if the market is decent. You'll need herbalism to gather the materials for this.
Blacksmithing-Decent for yourself with being able to use what you make while you level up, only for paladins and warriors though. And at the high levels you can make alot of cash if you get the right recipies, mainly weapons. Mining will get you your ore/stones, and can also make you rich end game on some of the smaller servers where prices are high.
Tailoring-Very hard to keep up with as you level until the end game because the materials you will need at lvl 20 will only be dropped by lvl 30 mobs, etc. However tailoring doesn't require a second profession to gather resources and mooncloth(the highest and most expensive material to make) and the items it makes usually sell high.
Enchanting-Another profession that doesnt require another to gather for you. However, you will be next to broke if you take this profession alone and you will be completly broke if you take tailoring with this. As long as you do enchanting and mining/herb/skinning together you'll be fine. Also, you can become unbelivably rich on some of the smaller servers if you get some of the rare recipies.
Engineering- Its semi usefull for hunters but this is just the fun profession of the game. You can make throwable bombs, death rays and tons of other fun stuff, but most of what you make you cant sell and what you can sell doesnt sell high. You'll probably want to take mining with this.
Leatherworking- I dont really know too much about this but from what I've heard its not that usefull after lvl 40 or so, but like I said, I don't know.
yeah, the way i think it should be seen is that you can buy herbs and potions but not engineering, the +15 is something i would have to live with but night elves get alot of racial bonuses useful to rogues, i think i might start with herbalism and keep a bunch of herbs in my bank, i want to do engineering cos it gives the rogue a whole bunch of new tricks, some people also say alchemy is boring at the start
also: you lose all your skills when you switch professions don't you? can you think of any other classes that benefit from engineering by having a new bag of tricks
