I only want an answer form NEW or RETURNING players who have acutally PLAYED THE GAME in the rcent past, lets say the last month or so. Please don't turn this into another "i played beta and it sucked, the game wasn't ready for release", beta is long over! If you haven't been on the game please don't respond! I am looking for honest good and bad answers about the CURRENT condition of the game. Especially from folks who gave up the game previously and recently gave it a shot due to the article posted yesterday.
I was beta all the way from the 2nd pass. Took a very active part in the game and the fan web page (tazoon.com), even spent many, many hours writing up documents to help out new players (faq). In fact.. should be a Guard Jezabel in game someplace .
Like many others I did loose interest as it went live and the game was bascially un-playable. I never even bought it.
Anyone who has recently re-tried the game.. is there improvement? I understand the low population and the difficulty with that. But beyond that how did it play? How was lag? could you actually play a caster?
Thanks in advance for honest responses.

Read my "first impressions" post.
I am gonna put Ryzom on hold for now and play Horizons, the crafting is very kewl hehe I'll post more on your thread here when I play more And btw I got no lag
Heh - Now I'll have to keep an eye out for her!
If you still have copies of any of those documents - especially any lore! - would you mind terribly posting them at the community forums? Tazoon.com's demise cost the player community a tremendous knowledge asset; anything you have that you could share would be appreciated.

I've played it roughly within the last month and it has improved. As I mentioned in another thread, it's at a state now where I wouldn't actively try to disuade someone from getting the game. However, I wouldn't actively promote it at this point, either, when considering the more modern options that are either available now or will soon be.
My character is a dragon focused purely on melee so I can't answer your question about being a caster.
To repeat what was said in the other thread...
They're working on a new patcher. I heard that it's eventually supposed to be a stand alone patcher so that you're not required to login to the web site. I do not know if that's true. However, it does launch some sort of application from the web page now, and the patcher has the Horizons logo. At the time that I played, this patcher was still in testing. So whether or not it launched was iffy but it generally worked well. Note that this patcher was still loaded via the web page at the time that I played and was not an external component.
A part of the ancient right of passage is in the game. It's not complete, but you can start it if your character meets the requirements.
Hoard items dropped a bit more regularly.
Usable items are supposed to be a part of the loot table. I can't say that I noticed this, but then again they wouldn't do my character any good. So if they dropped they'd have gone directly to the hoard with little consideration over the item itself.
I heard rumor that Tulga/AE is working on instancing some quests. You'll need to confirm this on your own, unfortunately, because I can't.
New tutorials for newbies, seperated into dragon and biped tutorials respectfully. I read that the new tutorial island for dragons is available now - but again, I can't confirm this myself.
The bad...
The worse is that the server doesn't - or at least did not - spawn mobs until a player walked into the area. It would occasionally take a few minutes before anything spawned. If you're searching for a named mob for a kill task then this, for me, was quite annoying. This also produced moments when you're suddenly surrounded by mobs - but, spawns don't seem to immediately attack. So this wasn't a huge concern.
....it did make the world seem just as empty as before though, since you're generally running (or in my character's case, flying) along and don't pause to wait for things. In which case you can miss the critters spawning. I learned to hang around areas for a bit.
There are still areas, such as Tazoon or player cities, that bring my system to a total crawl. I have to exit the area and/or look away to regain any form of movement beyond a picture slideshow. When porting to Tazoon, pulling in the view distance was required.
Those were the two worse things in my opinion. Other than that, they need to work on real quests instead of adding more "Kill X ammount of Y" tasks. I imagine that it's frustrating for such a small dev team to try to run a game like this.
You could always use their trial and start a new character to take a peek at the game. Just remember to cancel before ya get charged.
If you enjoyed the game before then it would probably be worth a second look by now. If you haven't played it before then, well, there are more modern games out there - but it's not going to kill you to take a look. It's just that today's gamers may find the "Kill X ammount of Y" tasks a bit too ho-hum for their tastes.

Thanks all for the responses. Please keep them comming. We are purchasing a new home so are hestiant to spend the bucks for another game. (two copies, my husband and myself). We have been playing Wow pretty extensivly, but that is loosing its joy for us. Mostly due to we just play 'solo' with the two of us, we don't join guilds so the highlevel game is difficult.
I'll see what I can do about getting what documents I have posted. Or at least emailed to the poster who who asked for them. I do have at least the FAQ someplace. Will be pretty outdated tho, but likely still a lot of good info in it. I was very proud of it .
edit:
Anarchy.. name sounds familar. "lets go to ttc" .com mean anything to you?
I am reading the other posts.. much more postive as long as I ignore some folks posts (ones who haven't played the game currently). So yeah, will likely fire it up . Look for a tell from Jezabel in the near future. (..counts 7 days out on her fingers).
Hey Jezabel,
I would have to say load it up and give it a try. I did this weekend and I must say I was pleasently surprised. It has been a long time since I played it though (July 2004) So improvement s are very noticable. you can actually travel to Tazoon now and have look around.
This weekend was full of people like myself returning for a look. People have alot of loyalty to this game. (I only played 2 or 3 months and left when my Guild all bailed when Chapter 11 was filed, I just retried because Im a sucker for the underdog)
Its playable now and the dev team is working to fix and improve the game.
I am enjoying it, its not the end all of MMORPGs but its worth a look if you are interested.
I have a few post myself, take a look....
Glad to see you giving Chaos a look-see, Anarchyart. Today's maintenance is going to be a bear - we have the biggest world update since the server merge rolling from Blight to live today. Any update of this size is going to have some bugs to work out - regardless of what game you're playing! - but if you're on later tonight, give me a shout. I'll be happy to set you up with tools and equipment if you don't have them already.

Yes the night before maintenance I FAOK (fell asleep on keyboard lol) some time before the servers went down and I woke up and I couldnt log back in So I waited till late last night and got to play a couple hours before bed What is your name on Chaos? My guys name is Dern Brando (my 2 fave actors) shoot me a tell! Someone named Lillia made me a full set of bronze chain and bronze plate and someone named Braknaught made me a cargo disk and gave me 5 silver And then some warrior named Dynasty gave me a nice 2 handed bronze sword! Such amazing people: it's like all the nice people are in one game!
Anywho I'm set for now, I'm just gonna level on New Brommel till about 13 and then set out for Kion Love to join your guild once I have a few more levels under my belt, want to explore a bit more before I join a guild anways can't wait to see ya in game take care!
To make a long story short. Not having a good experience at all with simply down loading the free trial and patching. Not a good impression on me, seems like I have rolled 2 years back in time to all the agrivation during beta. I will likley just cancel since I haven't even been able to create a character yet, let alone get in the game, and give Guild Wars a try.
Thanks again all for your replies!
/wave bye
Are you guys using the multi-threaded patcher? I use it and what a huge difference it makes for me. I used to dread the whole patch process, but it is definitely streamlined with the multi-thread version.
It's the thing mentioned in the upper right side of the screen when you are on the second login screen.
I just resubscribed both my accounts yesterday; been away from HZ since server merger and playing others (EQ, EQ2, WoW, CoH). Of those, only EQ and CoH grabbed me.
I've been watching HZ all this time though and noticed all the changes added to game as time passes. They are a company that really does respond to player feedback (probably they really kind of have to). FOr me it is like an entirely new game that I need to relearn almost from scratch because pretty much everything has changed (except for lag -- but then I am used to seeing lag in games now since there is serious lag in crowded areas of every game I have tried)
I made a dragon and see that there is a great new dragon tutorial that takes you to 3/3. Today I will create a new biped. Eventually when I have relearned the game enough I'll be able to play my mains.
I rejoined my old guild: the loyal few stayed and kept it going. And people are trickling back to the guild from other games because well there is just something about HZ that you can't find anywhere else.

So glad to hear ungrimagrol. Nice to hear positive input about this game I am so fond of. On the lag front, I was playing with the options and trying to find why people have such lag when I just don't and I think I found some things.
First off, max view distance: put to 50% or less as it doesnt affect the gameplay at all and the view distance is WAY far in this game.
Camera mouse smoothing: try playing with this option, it can cause lag if it isn't just right with your system
And the big one: camera follow tension under camera options for third person, this option can cause major lag with the camera floating around when u don't realy want it to. Try sliding the bar all the way to one side to make it very "tight" this cuts lag down to zero for me! The camera stops when you tell it to instead of slowly coming to a halt which causes lag.
Hope those helped at all, names Dern Brando on Chaos server, hope to see you online sometime

Actually it does that has never worked the way it was suppose to. It has been an on going bug and only a new client will fix it. At least that was what was said in the past. I do know for a fact the houdini bug is still in game.

Hmm haven't noticed maybe you are right I'll look closer but you really should try the game again, I had SO much fun last night fought my first golems hehe I know I'm slow but just enjoying the game. It ROCKS

ROFL, now that I know it bothers you I will make sure to repeat it once a day.
Have a nice day.

Um, no, we don't.
View distance can cause lowered framerates, since it adds to the amount of stuff that needs to be rendered. If you set your 'max characters to display' option too low, then you can have issues with characters & NPCs not showing up in areas where there are a lot of people running around.
Some people have reported problems with invisible creatures attacking them; the cause is still unknown and is under investigation. This is a fairly rare issue, though it can be rather vexing when it happens.
