what does this game offer to new players

so just saw that this game just reached its tenth anniversary which to me is an accomplishment in and of itself and it got me to thinking since ive been without a mmo since last year.

what im wondering is what does this game have to offer for newer players.  most older games are really hard for newer players to get involved with because you get the feeling you can never catch up to the guys that have been there for years and if its pvp oriented you just get owned over and over with no chance to fight back.

probably gonna check out the f2p part of it soon but was just wondering what the game is like, is it class based or skill based or something in between.  can you make a new character and do stuff without just being food for the higher level players.  how sandboxy is the game or is it just sandbox in title only.  can you really do anything you want or does the game lead you to quest hub to quest hub and hold your hand the whole time.  what is the endgame like, is it just more gear grind for bigger, better gear or is it just pvp and the accumulation of wealth to get more powerful.

anyways any help would be appreciated, what does this game have to sell to a new player.

Sigh...im usually not good at keeping things short and simple but im trying to make an effort now....you can have fun and succeed in AO if you put in enough time and maybe get lucky, but i'd play free to level 60 at least then if you are still thinking of upgrading, make a new account to upgrade don't upgrade your free account because if you do and you don't continue paying that account isn't usable.

And if you upgrade keep in mind you you will eventually need a active and helpful org when you are high level.

But you don't really need to worry about having a good org until you get... i'd say level 140 at the earliest, until 140 you'll just need to learn the new locations in shadowlands because it can be overwhelming at first and you can get lost. but the in game map is your friend. and these days the lft is no longer always enough to find a team, you will want to  talk in OOC chat channel for you faction and say "level # class lft" and be on the lft system. and later when you know the team spots it can help to go to the spots and see if a team is there with room for you.

You might be lucky and not run into a lot of drama like i seem to, but you should be prepared to put in the time and effort and remember there is two sites that can help you alot, AO-universe and Auno.org,  If you can't find help ingame it's online at those sites or the ao forums probably.
