Final Fantasy XIV: Auto Attack Reform

Final Fantasy XIV devs have put up a new article featuring a look at upcoming changes to the Auto Attack System. Among other reforms, the most compelling is the removal of the stamina system in favor of the overhauled auto attack feature. Devs have detailed how those changes will be implemented in the next patch as well as subsequent patches.

Auto-attack functionality will be prioritized in 1.18. Changes such as battle algorithm revisions, attack motion diversification, and peripheral motion tweaks are scheduled to take place in 1.19 and subsequent patches.

Attack Delivery

1.18 will introduce auto-attack in its basic form, which will permit Disciples of War and Magic to deliver a single strike (double for pugilists) each time it activates. Future patches will usher in multiple attacks, the activation rate of which will be determined by actions, traits, and items.

    Awesome feature. I'm sure FF XIV 1.84 will be a great game, ready for release.

    This game needed many things, but auto-attack was not one of them. TP and stamina usage needed to be streamlined, and latency and interface lag needed to be looked at, but the combat system was one of the really neat things about the game. Unfortunately, they're rebuilding the game according to what the players on the forums are screaming for - FFXI-2.

    whoa they changed the combat setting now to look like all teh other games, they really are that desperate, and for the comment here the main issues they still not work on it.

    FOR HONOR, FOR FREEDOM.... and for some money.

    I recently bought FFXIV, dont know why they ganhe the combat, is one of the things I liked, but lets wait and see how the new system works.

    How is auto attack going to make this game more fun?The classes and skills are boring as hell and unoriginal and mixing diff classes skills together is useless for the most part.All that needs to be fixed before anything.

    It's amazing how much they need to add to this game before it's even average.Seriously, they are adding basic mmorpg features in every patch, it's pathetic.

    I'm holding my breath on all this.

     

    I came back a month ago and took Marauder from 33 to 46.  I like the small changes, but that's just it, they're too small and have been trickling in.

     

    However, the new director, Yoshi-P, has done an amazing job of communicating.  He outlines what they're working on, he tells us when it will be released and why theyr'e doing what they're doing.  Yoshi-P has said the new battle system is the starting point for all other content.  They can't design dungeons, boss fights, and combat quests without first finalizing the combat.

     

    They have said that content will be released at a faster pace as soon as the combat is finalized.  I'm not in any hurry.  I have a family and a career.  I like the process of building an mmo.  I don't like mouse wheel/carrot on a stick mmos anymore (Rift/WoW).   I'm also realistic, if this game doesn't show me promise by the end of September, then I hve GW2 and SWTOR to look forward to.  

     

    I'm not married to any mmo, though I really love that SE is trying to get this back on track.... WOULD hate to see a truely different mmo go by the wayside.  This game has potential, it remains to be seen if that potential is EVER realized.  

     

    LASTLY - Yoshi-P has said that they feel PS3 release is the make or break it for FFXIV.  I believe as soon as its released for PS3, they will start charging a monthly fee.  If the game doesn't take off at that point (i.e. 200-300k subscriber base) then it's time to move on, for everyone's sake, and that includes SE.

     Pretty much, yeah. None of the changes to the game so far sound like it would be any less un-fun than it is now. Actually I found the core game (and everything else) to be so mind nubmingly boring, grindy, repetitive and unimmersive that it will never be something I will want to play.

    I have to laugh at the earlier comment that it will take another year before it is ready but that they will start charging  in the fall. They bascially have to, or admit defeat and shut the game down. By then there will be some good new MMO's out and they will be lucky if they can actually get enough people to pay for it and not have to shut it down.

    This is not the improvement people wanted, people wanted finished content, more content. I liked the battle system versus FFXI, I hated the camps, lack of fluid story quests like FFXI, lacks of chocobos which us just a staple of any FF game, the fact that not all content like Ishgard was available at launch, the fact that there are only 5 areas, 2 of those which you don't really play in till level 40+, and the lack of the various activities which FFXI had, like pankration, chocobo racing, and mog houses. The game is beautiful but lacks the substance that FF offered, the MMO industry is suffering because games lack substance and unique game design. FFXIV had unique game design but it needed a plethora of content more just to meet the minimum of what players considered acceptable. I despise this change to the game because it doesn't touch on any of the issues which are gamebreaking and actually servers to be more of a game breaker. Alas, I will wait till it is released to see if my feelings are valid, but I believe they are. For all the steps this game is taking in the right direction they just veered slightly off course...

    I gave up on this game when they made groups smaller. My playstyle is 'raider' unless the game I am playing is very action combat oriented for which I will tolerate small group setups. But small groups AND 'more of the same' in the combat department? No thanks.

    seriously..... these FF games will be a lot better if Square Enix make the gameplay more like the gameplay from Kingdom Hearts.... i LOVE the storylines these games present but the gameplay sucks... :(

    I've always hated the idea of Disney in my Final Fantasy, but I totally agree.

    The game just wasnt fun when i tried it I had lots of fun when FFXI released and I remember college students were going crazy over FFXI I'm not saying make a clone  but make a adventurous game FFXIV just feels like a grind a repetative like visuals alone makes a game.

    Its almost like they said here is a mission Hub go grind it out thats all you need and the visuals.....

    I just dont know how they can overcome all this their just wasting their money i think should just start over or make drastic changed and go back to alpha phase.

However, I think the work will continue up to about 1.20 until the game reaches a point where I think the balance of ranking up methods is normal.







    I wanted to mention this in the letter, but from patch 1.18 we will begin reforms to remove the current feeling that players are being bound to specific play styles. Travel-wise anima is a bit hard to touch on right now (as I've referenced in another thread), but we will be making edits to the return costs and surplus system in the same fashion. Especially in regards to the feeling that a loss will be incurred if you don't do leves every day, we are looking into implementing a type of ticket system that will let you store them up, and heading into 1.19 we will be starting the specification edits of this. (I will talk about the details of this in the letter following the release of patch 1.18.)







    I deeply apologize for the current lack of content and focus on the core fixes, but we have solidified our plans, so please look forward to the future!

    You clearly have no idea what you are talking about.  FFXI was relaunched in the United States:

    PC: October 28, 2003

    PS3: March 24, 2004

    Europe

    March 17, 2004

    even after that though it also launched on Xbox 360: April 2006 (though later in its career, it still brought in more completely new players than most expansions in other games)

     

    and FFXI  was sucessful enough for many expansions and good enough for me and lots of other fans.  This game hasn't launched on PS3, while I am not a console player I know that a lot of people who played XI were on the PS2, and that many who will play XIV (internationally) will also likely choose to play it on the PS3.  So when the game launches on PS3 it will be getting new players even in the current state it is in, however if it is greatly improved then it is exactly that a second chance for the game and for people on PS3 or PC to join / have on their servers a resurgent population.

     

    The reason most MMO's these days don't get a second chance unless they go F2P is that they never having another release giving them a chance for a resurgent population.  They simply get people trickling in at a few at a time and not making much of an overall difference in helping the community.  Major expansions might accomplish this a little, but it is not really the same especially when most modern expansions are often pretty lackluster and plenty of newer MMO's that have "failed" haven't even gotten a single decent expansion (which is my definition of a failed game: a lack of new content not blockbuster status). 

    Meanwhile SE hasn't seen a need to charge yet and still has ambitious plans for the game.  Maybe they are lieing to us about those though in order to keep us... not paying to play their game yet.

    Interesting... i have played FFXI for 5 years so its is not as if i don't know anything. But thanks for the history lesson. Comparing FFXIV to FFXI release is pointless because by the time FFXI was launched in US most of the bugs were fixed and major improvements were already made to the game. FFXI was nowhere in the same pathetic state as FFXIV on launch.

    On the other hand FFXIV was released in a broken and unfinished state in US and Asia at the same time. See the difference? so if you are hoping for similar response to FFXIV on re launch on PC and PS3 whenever that is going to be..sorry in my own personal opinion, it is still going to be a financial mess for SE.

    They are a lot more smarter than you give them credit for. And yes i am standing by what i said. There are no comebacks in MMO genre not after such a  clossal mess up.

    You don't make a very convincing case that XIV will be closed down, put on hold, or go to a F2P model so why should I care about your "prediction" based on what?  Purely anectodal evidence that lots of MMO's with bad releases seem to not recover?    Honestly what are some relevant examples of this; because XIV is part of the flagship franchise of a large developer and publisher, it has people playing on all servers, it has international servers, and it is still scheduled to be released to an entirely new market of millions of potential customers.  So no I don't think you know what you are talking about.

    Final Fantasy XIV is both published and developed by Square Enix a major game development company which continues to at the very least be invested enough the game to continue to develop it (as evidenced by updates and communication with the community).

    So they are working on it, they are still planning to release it, it will be a release to a major as of yet untapped audience for this game.  Do you have anything to argue with other than your myopic personal viewpoint based on apparently very little?  Want to go into some detail on what you mean by "MMO's seldom get a second chance"?

    Again, its an opinion that is all it is. And yes MMOS never get a second chance and if you are hoping for a huge comeback with millions of players rushing to grab the PS3 version of FFXIV, sorry that is not going to happen. I haven't seen any MMO make a comeback so far. EQ2, Vanguard, AOC, Warhammer Online.... are few examples. Yes they manage to stay afloat and recoup their investment but in no way are considered to be a run away success. You put too much faith in FFXIV if you think millions of potential customers are waiting for FFXIV's relaunch.

    77 million registered account means nothing. But i hardly doubt even 1 million player accounts will be made once console version is launched.  Something only tilme can tell.

Yes they manage to stay afloat and recoup their investment but in no way are considered to be a run away success. You put too much faith in FFXIV if you think millions of potential customers are waiting for FFXIV's relaunch.

     Can't be considered a success?  Well EQ2 gets plenty of new content so I consider that a success even though I think it is a lousy MMO.  Vanguard/AoC/Warhammer Online sorry buddy but none of those are comparable to FFXIV.  Vanguard was published by a startup MMO company which failed upon Launch, XIV is published by one of the larger Game developer/publishers in the world.  AoC/Warhammer Online had regional servers which were decimated by people leaving, and now they are going free to play but they also get new content.  I might not like the games but they did not fail.  All those games except Vanguard today has done more than simply "recoup their losses" they continue to put out new content for players to enjoy.  Millions of players, who the *&^% cares.  I play on a server that is limited to thousands anyways.  As long as I am guarunteed new content will be developed I consider a game a success.

    77 million registered account means nothing. But i hardly doubt even 1 million player accounts will be made once console version is launched.  Something only tilme can tell.

    A million, again with a million.  Who cares, FFXI never got a million accounts EVER.  No MMO I have ever enjoyed has had a million accounts.  MMO's with a million accounts let's see so that would be not counting F2P games WoW and what Rift?  Go enjoy your sucessful MMO's then I guess, luckily your definition of success isn't universal or even rational.

    Final Fantasy XIV is both published and developed by Square Enix a major game development company which continues to at the very least be invested enough the game to continue to develop it (as evidenced by updates and communication with the community).

     

     

    Again they are still developing for FFXIV, they are still going to launch on PS3.  Clearly it hasn't failed yet unless you hold it to some ridiculous standard more fitting to games with the appeal of farmville or World of Warcraft.  Honestly couldn't give a hoot if you think the game will be a success, I was posting to clear up the misconception that Square Enix "should or would" simply give up on the game.

     

    They have admitted it in no way met their expectations, and that they are completely revamping the game prior to the PS3 launch, but realistically they are not going to simply give it up at this point.  It's a major title in their flagship series, and unlike all the other titles of "failed MMO's" you mentioned their publisher/developer (being them) are still behind the title.

     

    I played Vanguard btw, it was/is a great game and better than 99.99% of all other MMO's on the market.  I'd still be playing it to this day if it weren't for the fact that SOE has abandoned it and is no longer planning to seriously develop new content for it in the future.  Until that happened I didn't consider it a failure either.

     

    Some people play these things called good games rather than devoting their playtime to the market leader purely because it is the most profitable for the company who makes it, not that helping a company thousands of miles away from me amass massive profits or feeling reassured in my choice because millions of other people "did it" doesn't just sound like a blast on its own, it's called thinking for yourself you should try it sometime! (that's purely a subjective opinion about you something I know little about that I won't even try to base on any evidence since that's the only language you speak)
