Ok put it this way... if you like star wars get SWG. If you don't like star wars, get neither. SWG is probably the best open ended mmorpg out there, you can literally create your very own virtual business on the game, make factories and farms, create houses to sell your products etc etc but the combat is good but somewhat lacking i found (before CU, i havn't tried the CU yet.)
I wouldn't recommend FFXI to anybody, this is by far, the worst game i have ever played and after an hour it literally left me in tears. This is coming from a FF fanboy. I LOVE Final Fantasy games but this is just terrible. My first two hours was spent in an area waiting for little insects to spawn and for me to whack them with my primitive weapon. Also until you reach level 5 you only have 1 special move and the cooldown is ike 2 hours. O and you have great fun chatting with the Japanese lot, thats right, squaresoft couldn't be bothered to release anymore servers so we have to play alongside japs who know hardly any English.
Still don't let one persons opinions get in your way but if your a Star Wars fan then definately get SWG as it really does feel like Star Wars.
I don't really like either of them, but I'll go with Senden--get SWG if you have to get one. I've played pretty much every Final Fantasy, and even I loathe FFXI with a passion.
SWG isn't brilliant, but it's much better than FFXI, and I haven't even played SWG since the two weeks following its release--from what I've heard, it's a much better game now.
I'd say go with SWG, for the reasons that you can do a lot more with both combat and with tradeskills, and the community is a lot nicer. FFXI, while not the worst MMO I've ever got into, is defnately lacking on a lot of things. For the most part, it's just a big, boring grindfest with a lousy tradeskill system. Whoever came up with those crystals should be forced to eat them.
SWG .. for all reasons above and much MUCH less grinding than FF.

FFXI for the win! I played FFXI for about a year and had a good time doing so. Best turned based MMO ever IMO.
You will never know until you try them both, however.

If you like Star Wars get SWG
Matter of fact if you're bent on one of them get SWG
SWG has far more things to spend your time on. The variety in the game is mind boggling. Anything from being a dancer in a club to a multi-million credit making business to being a bounty hunter or jedi or just flying in space or being an Ace pilot for the empire or rebellion.
Lots of variety, less grind than most MMO's out there and a fantastic community.

I don't think many people would like SWG if they're not already into Star Wars, so that's definitely a factor. On the other hand, I didn't much care for FFXI. The economy is more unstable than like...anything, and there's almost no soloability or use from small groups after about level 12.
