I don't get it !
Yesterday someone in my guild was asking about graphics settings. He was getting lag and Vanguard would not play well. Everyone was giving him advice, He had a lower end laptop yet he REFUSED to lower any silders. He insisted on max settings !........I chatted with him, telling that I have a $450 laptop that I got off the shelf at Best Buy, and I changed from " Ballanced " to " High performance " and it runs perfict.....He asked but refused to take ANY ONES advice.
What is it with graphics ?.......Vanguard, any game or mmo people insist on running at max settings. Yes it's 2011, yes Vanguard is not coded the best. But what about game play ?
I have a real life friend that thinks the same way. Since I could talk to him at work I convinced him to lower his settings, after refusing to lower anything for a long time.
Why is it that people with cheap computers think they have power rigs. I have one at home too. But if something is not playing right I'll lower the settings !

I have a high-end rig and cannot run on max settings. I run pretty close to max, but not at it. I also get some pretty noticable stutter in the cities. Anyone who feels entitled to running on max settings with a low-end rig is dumb.
Haha ! Yeah, I would love to see that computer that can handle Vanguard in cities and maximum settings.
And this is why pc gaming isnt for everyone.
Also bear in mind that while a $400 laptop for example seems like a paper weight to most of us, for some it seems like an expensive piece of kit.
On today's comp the game should run exceptionally well. But again look at what times we live in, alot of the games on the market can be ran by your standard store bought PC at top settings. VG is the exception to that rule and you will need atleast a "decent" rig.

Reason is these people don't know about computers (it is not a bad thing), and buys the marketing crap they read.
I see so many adverts for "gaming laptops", so it is not a surprice that people actually think these machines are great for gaming. The old news is, the heart of a gaming computer is the graphics card, and the better (faster) the graphics card, the more cooling (and therefore space) is needed. This also goes for cpu power and other components. That is why a stationary pc can be far stronger. On top of that a laptop with similar performance to a stationary pc, generally cost up to twice as much (4 times if there is a shiny apple on it).
Anyways, I can totally see why a laptop is so nice, but you really only get a medium power gaming computer from even the top models. And just to add to the confusion, Vanguard has very high end graphics, I mean when it launched I had a brand new pc with a top graphics card, and I was only able to just run it on medium settings - I hear it has been optimized since then, but it is still highly advanced graphics, even for todays standards.

I really dont see how people do serious mmo gaming on laptops. I mean I can see it possible but man I need the "comfort" zone if yo uknow what I mean when gaming.

It's not just the graphics. Vanguard has serious problems with processor and storage bottlenecks. Newer processors should be able to handle the game, but at launch, there simply weren't processors on the market that could run it smoothly. Needing a solid state drive in order to avoid hitching is quite a problem, too.
I can run through NT with no stutter. The reason? An SSD drive. I put Vanguard on an SSD drive and there is almost zero stutter, when changing zones, in cities, etc. I can run Vanguard on max settings and run seamlessly through the land. It is a great experience
I have a quad AMD 3.2 ghz core, 4 gig DDR3 mem, ATI 5750, and Vanguard on the 64gb SSD drive. Not a top end rig.

2025: 48 years on the Net.
Computer games are a visual medium. If you're going to stare at something for hours at a time for as long as you're subscribed to it, the graphics need to be appealing to you.
Also, it's understandable that people refuse to adjust their sliders or whatnot for a game. It's a GAME and most people simply aren't tech savvy enough to want to mess with their computers that deeply. If every other game they enjoy can be installed and played with a minimum of hassle on whatever PC or laptop they own, most people simply are not going to go out of their way for one specific game.
I'd play the game again if they'd stop charging top of the line MMO subscription fees for a game that hasn't had anything done with it in a few years.
He can still have it set at balanced and messed around with sliders. Take out shadows, grass, LoD on trees, clipping plane, the fog system, the clouds, the water, etc etc.
People gotta make some compromises, if they want to play a game smoothly.
Well, it is getting somewhat old so most computers can run it now. Ancient stuff and really cheap laptops wont run it.
The engine could have been slightly better optimized but I think that if you wonder if your computer can run it or not it is time to upgrade. My old P4 I had at VGs release could run it fine, that was 2 computers ago and should tell us alot, the engine is better now as well.
Totally maxed out is a diferent matter, the majority of the desktops at least will probably do that fine but only the more expensive laptops.
Haha.
Well I cant speak for others, but my best gaming computer IS a laptop right now.
I just happened to love the look of alienware laptops ... and as my normal computer is kinda old now, the alienware is the faster computer.
I wanted to play Vanguard, but it wouldn't properly run on my computer even on low settings. It's not a bad computer, was cream of the crop in 2008. It could run, say, Dawn of War or The Witcher without much effort. With Vanguard, at first the performance is perfect and beautifully smooth, but then it starts grinding to a halt and never rising above 20 fps (or less). I can't play like this.
Luckily, most of the good games don't require a powerful rig. I can play the recent Victoria II perfectly well, for instance.
