my buddies and i have been playing mmo's for over a decade and gw2 is definitely on our list. we will be checking out TERA as well but a few of my friends have been impressed by what they see in gw2. for some reason, they seem to have a theory that because the game will be buy to play and without having a monthly sub, the community is going to be full of 12 year old kids spamming chuck norris jokes. i fail to see their logic in this, as wow is p2p and has a sub-par community. for me, being b2p is a positive attribute about that game imo, i am failing to see the negativity that my other friends are having about being b2p.

Every game has retards in its community. That's just how it works. The Guild Wars community is actually full of very intelligent mature people. They'll all no doubt be making the switch to GW2. The people that do end up buying the game that are twelve year old kids will be the minority. Your friends are just overexagerrating and trying to find something complain to about.
what will help is depending on what guild you join, I tend to shy away fromt he community at large and focus on guild groups and allaince groups. A mature fun guild can make or break a game. The Guild Wars community has a huge age make up but the guild i was in was mainly 25-40 players all who make the game a blast to play and only added to my overall guild wars experence
I think they confuse B2P with F2P. I thought GW1's community was quite mature but that might also be because it was not a standard game, GW2 might be slightly more familiar to mmo fans.
i played gw1 back in the day and don't remember the community being bad at all. i have no idea what my friends are smoking to be honest. not having to shell out 15 bucks a month works for me.
I've run into these people in every game I've played, which have all been P2P. If that's how they feel, that's on them. What's funny is most of those chuck norris type guys are over 18. lol
I agree with this completely, which is why many (not all) of the arguments against B2P puzzle me, too. But check out the other B2P thread on this forum for other people's rationales. There's a very strong perception that you get what you pay for, which I respect (though I think it's more that companies will readily charge more for something if they think the perception of value will get people to pay for it; not that I blame them!! but I prefer a little more transparancy).
They'll probably have a blacklist which you can ignore players with.
Plus, if WoW is a p2p game and has a bad community, what difference would it make if Guild Wars 2 was P2P? Not much.
Also, they're making this game griefing-proof.
So unless some troll finds a glitch that can let's him steal all your items (and how many MMO's have had that kind of glitch?) You don't have to deal with them.
WoW has a monthly sub and is FULL of little kids who act like punks, so payment model means squat
Exactly, exactly, exactly.
I agree with anyone stating that WoW's community is... not up to par.
Also, from my experience, GW has the best MMO community of almost any I've ever played in. There are others (EvE, LotRO, etc.) that are also great, but GW has been my MMOhome for 6 years, and I've almost never had a bad experience.
I don't play any high tier PvP though, and there have been comments of the GW community there, but you will have elitists in any e-sport game.
Both EvE and Lotro have better communities then gw1. Lately Lotro's became less friendly , but still mature.
I heard this concern with Firefall being F2P... it's a worry for sure.
As long as ArenaNet can implement some strong community features to aid the game design eg the Guild Features, I hope to find like-minded ppl to play the game with. That consists of a lot of criteria for every person eg age, likes, playing habits, mmo background etc. A lot to tick off, potentially and tailor the community to if the game achieves a LARGE PLAYERBASE from which to subset down from... eg the reason ArenaNet chose the server population size in part.
Robin Dunbar's theory of brain size in primates is very interesting on this aspect of community and it'd make some interesting findings if someone has done the maths for frequency of bumping into the same names on one server vs enough players on one server to create the truly mmo effect as well... as well as selection criteria (probably down to players through guilds more than anything).

you mean like 40yrs old acting like a kid who act like punks :P
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
the 12 year olds flailing around chuck norris jokes will be anywhere and every where in the mmo world, regardless of whether the game is F2P,B2P,P2P...etc
it doesnt matter,they'll be there.
Especially GW2, seeing how popular and widely known it already is.
Anet should create a chuck norris character which regulates the channels and give everyone who uses chuck norris' jokes a roundhouse kick.
Cos they deserved it.

The funny thing is is that I've had some of the best gameplay experiences one can find in B2P/F2P stuff. Ultima Online servers, whilst not technically either, have had some really nice people in them, and then there's Puzzle Pirates and Spiral Knights. Not to mention the likes of Minecraft and Terraria.
Really I think it just depends upon one factor: It's all about whom you hook up with in the game.
Every game is going to have its share of idiots--and I dread to think of what kids are going to do to the charr--but that's just something you accept with any online game. It's also worth keeping in mind that one person's idiot will be another person's hero. Everyone has different tolerance levels for different things, so it's hard to judge how many idiots a game will have, since techically an 'idiot' is, let's face it, 'any person I don't like.'
I say just go with it. It's not going to be any better or worse than anywhere else.
