I find the forums in World of Warcraft VERY refreshing, since you can say just about what you like without any fear of being warned or banned due to some trigger happy fanboi-moderator. The forum of WoW is truly the best when it comes to the 'freedom of speech'.

If by "Freedom of Speech" you mean there is a lot of game bashing going on, then Darkfall may have WoW beat.  The Darkfall forums were basically a non-stop Aventurine bashing fest around when the game was released.

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

While that may be true, I've seen them take down a few posts they didn't like in my times on them, however there is a cost to this freedom. Spend a few months reading those forums and your feelings on humanity as a whole will change, and not for the better.

As long as you follow the basic rules (which is pretty standard for most forums), the RIFT forums are pretty damn liberal.

  • chriselchrisel Member UncommonPosts: 990

I do not see "harassing" as freedom of speech. I do feel though, that anyone could be as negative they want to, without moderators going nutty just because they are blinded fanbois.

Would certainly say EVE has a community that thrives on freedom.  Players are allowed to discuss en masse anything they dislike about the game on the forums, and there are often MASSIVE threadnaughts about changes coming to the game that players disagree with.  Not censored by mods at all.  Even with its issues recently, CCP is a company that doesn't censor its players when they have an opinion.

WoW forums are free up to a point. i know that MANY guild wars 2 related topics were obliterated within a few minutes for no reason(no trollling going on, no flaming) around gamescom and PAX last year.

Oh come on, the WoW forums are even worse troll and muckpits than these.

I should know, been mucking about there ever since the european launch, and if i were to tell only the very worst of the pondfilth of the mmo genre reside there.

  • gordiflugordiflu Member UncommonPosts: 757

Maybe the only reason for the WoW forums beeing so lightly moderated is that there's no human way to moderate that beast.

In that sense, there was plenty of freedom of speech in the Barrens chat.

Actually one of the suprise games that lets you give constructive critisism is Gods and Heroes rome rising.they are amazing.the community are not too bad also lol.check the forums out..you would be shocked at what some peeps have said or maybe not.

I got banned forever just for posting all of the Harry Potter 7 spoilers ina WoW (Waiting on Warhammer) Thread back in the day. I say there is no freedom.

Yeah, how ironic, when in fact I wasn't saying I was waiting on warhammer, but that's what thread I posted it in. Good comprehension there buddy.

To the point of my 5k+ hours on WoW, most of, nearly 3/4 of it, were during Vanilla and TBC. So, I can legitmately say I haven't enjoyed the game since Activision chimed in.

You have no freedom of speech on any private message board.  That right only prevents the government from restricting your speech.  Assuming you mean in America.

The WoW boards are a toilet and always have been.  There is almost nothing you can say on them without being flamed and trolled immediately.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

The OP was not talking about the legality of "freedom of speech", but moreso companies giving freedom of speech on a forum.

To be honest, I agree with you and the OP and bit.

WoW and Rift forums are great.

What I cant stand is Fan-Forums being used as main forums, EXAMPLE: Guild Wars 2 forum, and Warhammer Forum early on.

They both are killers of the Community, and allow bashing of critics that try to better the game with their criticism.

But the problem I do have with RIFT's forum, is that the Developers dont talk there.

Freedom of speech, yes. The WoW forums have this out the wazoo. However, thanks to being so pathetically moderated, many threads have a tendancy to boil down into flamewars where no useful discussion occurs. Rift forums are generally quite good, with General Discussion cut down somewhat on unnecessary flames and attacks, and very lightly moderated Off-Topic forums.

I disagree on the freedom of speech on the WoW forums.

If your post can be taken the wrong way, the moment some one reports you, you're guaranteed a forum ban.

I received a ban for "harassment" by posting a nameless e-mail reply from a wow tech support agent on an unresolved issue in the WoW support forums. It took me 3 months to get the ban cleaned off my record as the moderators refused to acknowledge they were wrong even after I went one level up where they finally removed the ban from my record.

So yeah. Not a fan of WoW's forum moderation nor the people that post on it.

Let's not forget the instant perm-bans when people were expressing their concerns about the RealID issue on the old WoW forums.

I would also like to add its perfectly fine to call someone a troll, but never, ever call someone a fanboi.

I found SWTOR official forums to be very good. They let you criticise the game quite freely, much more freely than the SWTOR forum in here.

Meh I am an old troll with the SWG forums.  Personally I found my duels with the Mods refreshing.

It's not much that Mods in WoW 'let you' criticize the game as it is the fact that moderators are understaffed, and the general discussion boards move very quickly.. almost too quickly for a moderator to digest the posts.  I don't have any link for this, but I believe that General Discussion is staffed by no more than 6 moderators.

And the developers don't really read the general discussion forums unless there's a substantial volume on the topic.  Rather, the developers pay attention to two sites and pretty much only these 2 sites for commentary.  (basically outsourcing moderation to them).

AJ and EJ set the tempo to the beat that Blizzard's developers drum to.

AJ is ArenaJunkies and you must be a gladiator (WoW's term for the highest of the high in PVP) in the most recent season in order to post.  Blizzard developers are known to read these forums pretty regularly, although they don't often post.

EJ is 'ElitistJerks', which is technically a Horde guild's personal website, but it is also the source of PVE theorycrafting.  (on a grand scale).  Blizzard Developers are known to frequent the site as well as post there, and the moderation is stiff.  If your post doesn't add something tangible to a discussion, you recieve an immediate infraction and a forum suspension.  This forum is for math people and by math people, and they don't want to tolerate anything else. (which isn't a bad thing at all)  Spreadsheets and calculators are the order of the day, so even if you consider yourself skilled in math, you would be prudent to bring your A game to the discussion.

So... you expressed your opinion and when someone expressed their opinion you assumed it was trolling or flaming?

I'm sorry, have you actually read the WoW general discussion boards?  They're really only slightly better than an imageboard.  It's a total trollfest, and it got worse after everyone's bans got removed after the transition to the new forums.
