EVE Online: Post-CSM Summit Press Conference Report

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Last week, a leaked internal CCP document caused furor in the EVE Online community, enough that an emergency meeting was called between developers and the Council on Stellar Management. At the conclusion of the meeting, the CSM held a press conference that MMORPG.com's Mike Bitton attended. He's got the full report of the statements made during the press conference. Read on!

To set things right, CCP Games invited the Council of Stellar Management, a council made up of (and elected by) players selected to act as their voice to developer CCP Games, out to CCP Games headquarters in Iceland for an emergency meeting to discuss the brouhaha. Both CCP Games and the CSM released statements over the weekend signaling that both sides came away from the discussions pleased.

Read more of Mike Bitton's EVE Online: Post-CSM Summit Press Conference Report.

    "Smoke and Mirrors",

You got that right, but from CCP not the other way round.

    What a bunch of garbage.

EVE is one game I will never be returning to. The suits have their meeting to figure out how to BS the players into forgeting what they saw. CCP can take their excuses and stick them up their pods.

"Democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried." - Winston Churchill

I may have had my issues with CCP's change of business model and with the CSM's read of the situation, but I still fundamentally believe that the concept of a formal, democratically accountable body of players has been one of CCP's great contributions to MMOs.

But what about the motive for the move(cash grab).... Did any of these reporters read the finacial position of CCP ...and why they are trying to increase there Cash position ...!  Its all in thier finacials....

Smoke and mirrors cost them my 2 accounts.

  • eric_w66eric_w66 Member UncommonPosts: 1,006

And as for the leaker, here's to them. Obviously THEY care about the playerbase more than Hilmar does or Zulu or any of the bigwigs at CCP. Sure they timed it. Makes perfect sense to me. And if CCP wouldn't keep damning themselves with internal communications, the leaker wouldn't have any AMMO. Don't blame the leaker CCP.... blame the source.

  • eric_w66eric_w66 Member UncommonPosts: 1,006

Oh, and I trust the CSM about as much as I trust CCP. Which is to say, not at all.

My god... what do you people want... that the CEO comes home to you with a share in the company... the full finnacial plan and development roadmap...?

In all honesty i think the people who decide to stay out make for a win/win scenario... They do not need to do anything they obvious does not like any more and the game have less umphats that can in no way shape or form be pleased.

This have been a good conversation

Nothing more than smoke and mirrors PR spin to distract the players. That was the only purpose of the CSM in the first place. For those that don't remember or don't know, the CSM was only invented after CCP was caught red handed in developer misconduct and after unsuccessfully trying to cover it up. The CSM is nothing more than a convenient mouthpiece for CCP when CCP is in trouble. At other times CCP has had no trouble ignoring them.

I just wish someone would come out and give some damn straight answers.  The fact that they do not want to come straight out and say "There will be NO pay to win items" in game makes me believe that they have a plan in place to do just that.  They're just waiting for all the hub bub to die down so they can sneak it in quietly, possibly after they get another couple of months out of those that are on the fence on whether they should stay or not.

I saw this sort of thing at SOE and look where it has gotten them.  CCP, you can make a great game, but you are no where NEAR as big as you need to be before you can piss off your community and still be viable.  You're a niche market.  I'm sure there are far more people on these forums that tried your game and hated it than people who tried your game and loved it.  You have (had?) a loyal player base.  Look after them, cultivate their interests (within reason obviously).  They are after all your bread and butter.

What we want is a commitment from CCP to not sell non-vanity items in the cash shop. And after making a big production about summoning the CSM to Iceland for an emergency summit and then releasing statements that everything has been resolved and everyone is happy, the bottom line is CCP did not make a committment to not sell non-vanity items in the cash shop.

If people are satisfied with that, then fine. As long as people are aware that what was asked for by the players before the summit wasn't delivered.

I'm not sure whether I should smile or bang my head on the table. The last time we saw this kind of loud and hurf blerf presentation from a CSM member was Darius, and as I understand he now works at CCP. I voted for the guy, but I am really starting to wonder now what Mittani is thinking and doing.

It seems to me that Eve players have stuck their heads in the sand already.

Buy items and sell them for ISK? That's "Pay-To-Win".

Their game is compromised already. They allowed it. The line in the sand has been pushed past their head-caves. Expect that line to be pushed more in the future.

    Once upon a time....

I don't get the whole process of this summit at all.

CCP did something with very poor communication skills and several leaked documents point to decision making that isn't being respectful or honest with players.

CCP forms a summit to talk with the players elected representatives, so they can filter information and communicate with the players.

The player representatives have signed an NDA about things that were seen and discussed.

CCP hasn't really answer the one questions players have been asking and the player representatitves can never talk about things that were discussed.  Why go through all this mess when a simple direct answer from CCP on their forums could have put this matter to bed within a few seconds?

I can only think of one reason.

This is generally the response of either CCP forum alts and/or people who suck up to CCP, hoping to get some crumbs thrown their way. Happens with every company and every game.  They're usually the VERY last to stick around, following good money after bad when a company just about completely alienates its playerbase.  The game usually shuts down not long after.

Oh, noes! Put on your Tin Foil!

Just recycle your characters, unsub and be done with it. CCP is not going to commit to a "We will never add non vanity items statement."

One day when the game goes into major decline, or the majority of players demands it, they might very well do.

But there are no current plans for that, and that is what the CSM was used to ensure you. And they did. Good enough for me.

Are there no recordings from these press conferences? I'm going over a few websites but it is all contradicting and confusing, would be much more useful to listen to it and make our minds up.

    <Jedi hand motion>

This is not the cash shop you think it is... There is and never will be that type of cash shop... Move along, move along... ^^

Only time will tell if this is only a tactical retreat, or if they are sincere.  My money is on tactical retreat. There is simply WAY too much money to be made in an eastern style cash shop (as no doubt demonstrated to them by their Chinese partners), for most companies to pass up.   CCP was no doubt rather surprised by the extent of the reaction to this.  Lets see what happens in the next year or so.

Lets see. When people where really angry, CCP response resulted in 400+ pages of rage. Now, we are back to the normal 40+ pages of whining that any message generates form the CCP haters...

In game in the Incursion channel (400+ people) I am in we have been making jokes about those still raging for the last few days.

Also no rage in local, not even Jita.

So, nothing concrete, just a hunch.

That's rather in line with regular group behaviour following social upheavals, can't as such be used for any attempt at quantying feedback trends.

I was kinda hoping you had some community surveys or such, as I have seen several of those on the EVE forums and in some other communities as well. Not the CCP ones, but community driven research.

CCP normally doesn't do that, except with leading questions, and at the moment I find all this mess, well, messy. So looking deeper.

Tin-foil hat, nerd rage or being naive, call it what you want.  I'm not really impressed when companies have little meetings with small groups of players anymore. Especially for something that could and should have been addressed with a simple post on their own forums.

I just do not think CCP is treating their customers with a lot of respect and the little dog and pony show isn't impressing me.

Also, no need to tell me to quit.  I'm just posting an opinion on the available information.  Don't take it so personally.
