I've been searching for a new game lately and I continuously find myself getting kicked in the face by the ridiculous "full loot, open world pvp" garbage.
I can not, for the life of me, figure out why developers make these games. The niche for it is so small, it's impossible to turn a respectable profit. I've run into three games this week alone that I was ready throw money at until I saw they were this BS PvP full loot garbage.
Sad panda indeed ....

Which do you have the issue with?
TSW - AoC - Aion - WOW - EVE - Fallen Earth - Co - Rift - || XNA C# Java Development
It's been an uphill struggle for me ever since battlegrounds were introduced in World of Warcraft. I don't even bother with PvP in MMOs anymore. If I want to play sport-style PvP, I just load up TF2.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
Thats the most enjoyable kind of PvP IMO. Dying should have penalties, and they shouldn't be minor.
I only play MMOs which have no instancing nowdays, and I prefer open PK. Preferably full loot too, but not required.

Currently playing: Black Desert Korea (Waiting for EU)
Always hating on instances in MMOs! Open worlds, open PvP, territory control and housing please. More persistence, more fun.
I actually bought Darkfall and got completely burned on it three weeks in ... I honestly LOVE that game except for the fricking full PvP/full loot aspect of it.
Earthrise: I was actually seconds away from buying before I discovered its dark secret. I desperately want a skill based Sci-Fi game like that. (Not EVE... Getting tired of EVE)
Mortal Online looked good ...
Xsyon was tempting, it has some really interesting concepts.
Face of Mankind: Started to look at it, but by this point I started checking PvP status first thing.
I can totally respect your style of game play, but I whole heartly f'ing hate it.
I am utterly terrible at PvP and it just kills me to work so hard on building up a cool set of gear, then having it taken away by some douche 50 levels higher than me.
I honestly wish I could subscribe to that type of game play, but I just can't ... I'm a carebear.
It is great that game isn't the same and some FFA PvP games should really exist for the players that prefer them.
You just need to try something different if it isn't for you, as long as all games doesn't use the same PvP it shouldn't be a problem.
I am dissapointed in PvP myself, but more because I feeol that no game really tapped the great potential of PvP and that PvE genreally is a lot more evolved. Pv will be a lot bigger in the future as long s someone get's the point nd put as much work into PvP as have been put into PvE.
WARhammer. Though PvE is mediocre, has some of the best massive PvP out right now. Hundreds of people every night in the open world fighting.
If you, as you say, aren't the most skilled in PvP, this is a good game because groups are so large, you can provide support in one way or another where the main skill of importance is listening to the warband leader.
Some people really like the PvP in Rift. I don't care for battlegrounds when you have a nice big open world, though I do have trouble finding open PvP even on my very populated server, people tend to run from me half the time even when they're the same level range. They need some more objectives in the contested zones like WAR.
If Fallen Earth could get its population up it can have fun PvP. Just seemed like the same 50 of us fighting over the same land over and over.

I've played WAR and did really enjoy it. The problem is once you get out of Tier 1, the world seems completely dead because that's where the free trial stops. At least, that was the case the last time I looked at it.
I might take another peak at it ... I was also a huge fan of Fallen Earth, but I think the F2P/MT model they're taking is awful. I am a rabid proponent to F2P/MT games because I feel like the quality of development goes away and is replaced by tin cups constantly being shaken at you for more change.
When you get out of tier 1 make sure ou ask where the fight is, because it may be in another zone then.
Rift is a lot more populated now, and if you don't mind instanced battlegrounds, those are constantly going. And as far as skill, you can macro up stuff (putting multiple powers on one button) and it can be made a lot easier depending on your build, than some games. The building your character is fairly complicated, but not the actual PvP play.

RIFT is a fine game, but I just couldn't get into it because it was WoW with a new skin ...
One of the main reasons I'm on such a difficult hunt is because so many of the modern MMO's are basically the same game, just with a different skin and maybe a slight spin on certain mechanics.
Loved the PvP in WAR, and I generally avoid PvP in MMOs because of all the idiots I tend to find on PvP servers. In fact, I think I did way more PvP in that game than I ever did quests or straight PvE.
Huh, IMO PvP without "open" and "full-loot" isn't PvP at all. What's the point when there are no consequences to dying except for maybe a bit of embarrassment? It becomes pointless, like throwing water balloons at a brick wall and expecting it to break.
I'll keep my niche games, thank you.
I like the niche as well.
Material and petty people don't get it.
The King likes the excitement and the responsiblity that a dangerous world provides. Everyone's getting tired of plastic and static MMOs and longing for "the way it was".
Well the "way it was" is full loot, everyone's a possible threat, and the world's our oyster. When a game company provides people more control, actual control, you'll find people seeing the magic of the genre again.
Being hand held, gated, fish bowled has gotten tiresome.
....indeed sad panda. There's the other choice. That which every other mmorpg offers meaningless, non-consequential, shoe-box 8v8 instanced third-person shooter pvp, where entitlements of notlosing has become the narcotic, there is absolutely no relevance on factonal game-play, no risk, no rewards, other than the pursuit of a varying shade of purple item by grinding the same lobby-system map over and over and over.
So most choices are between hardcore full-loot (which should be a derivative of that ) and nanny-state no-loot (which there should be a derivative of that). Not much of a middle-ground today, I think.
I don't get the stupidity of not offering alternate server options. Really you would rather have less revenue?!? And my comment goes both ways. Why not offer lootable WoW pvp servers? Of course you can't offer a server for every single fetish but at least hit the major ones.
Word
The full loot is stupid because all you have to do is go farm lowbies and you ruin the game for everyone.
I also like full loot open world PvP, but that is not what the OP was asking for suggestions for.
Don't hijack people's threads.

It's fine ... I'm glad people like that sort of game, it allows for plenty of variety ...
I'm just pissed that the few games i really wanted to play the most ended up being of the evil genre.
He wasn't asking for anything. Re-read.
*wiping tears of laughter from his eyes*
By kicked in the face you mean repeatedly murdered and looted? :P
No really.. Anyone who played MMOs before WOW typically likes this kind of PVP, and the latter folks usually don't.
I dont see your issue.. 95% of all mmos feature carebear handholding PvP.. Just dont play the 3-4 games that have full loot open world pvp..
This is the problem right here. Most new big named MMO's are just trying to copy the WoW model. And all the otehrs are low on cash-flow, so they end up pushing the game out before its even close to being done.
What we need is the developers to finish the game and follow a new unique model, instead of just copying one and releasing the game well before it's finished.
That never really happened.
All people can do is assume.
There were gank squads for sure. But they could be raided against. Areas of contest were all over really. New / low players could also often band together and form a community and from it give PVP meaning.
Besides, lowbs never had the good gear. But they'd often cry for help from people who did.
It's fun to actually use your brain while playing a MMO.
I'm never disappointed by PVP nowadays.
...because I get it from games like TF2 and LoL, where the entire game is designed to support interesting skill-centric PVP.
World PVP systems are all about winning or losing by casual game mechanics (play longer; bring more friends.)
Instanced MMORPG PVP systems are only one step above ('play longer' still matters.)
If you're a serious PVPer seeking pure PVP, skip MMORPG PVP and find some non-MMORPG to play.

Yes and btw both of those games are free now, so why not check them out. Although, I still would love to find a good PvP MMo as well. I just find them fun to play.
The problem is that most MMO's are released well before they are finished now, which leads to imbalance and people generally getting pissed off.
